Red face Parents Birth Weight effect Baby's birth weight??

    Hi everyone,

Wasnt sure on where to post this one so mods if you need to move it, be my guest!!

I was talking with family members the other night and we were all predicting what the birth weight of my bub might be (long way off i know!!). This has got me thinking - does your weight and your partners weight at birth mean your going to have a bigger baby? Reason i ask is i was 8pound 15 and DH was 9pound 7 and all the girls in my family went overdue - Thats when bubs gets fatter!!! I am quite fearful of having a large baby becuase my mum couldnt give birth naturally (pelvis wasnt large enough) and i am not a very large person!

Someone put my mind at rest ... please haha

My mum was 3lb 7, Dad, not so sure... I was 6lb 8 and DH was 7lb 4 and my DD was 8lb 9.

I don't think it has much to do with it at all, luckily for my SIL, her DP still holds the record at one of the hospitals here.... 13lb 9!!! OUCH!!

A friend's OB told her that it is the father's birth weight that is more predictive of how big the baby will be. She was majorly panicking because her DH was over 10lbs!!! She herself was over 9lbs. Nothing to worry about, both her bubbas were 7 pounders.

    DH was 8lb 10, I was 9lb 14 and our babies were 9lb 3.5, 8lb 8 and 9lb 8.5. My little sister was 10lb 14 and her baby was only a puny 7lb 2 (by our family standards LOL)

I don't think it has anything at all to do with the size of the parents - we can't predict nor can we change the weight our babies will be - also with the overdue bubs having more time to grow theory, a normal pg is up to 42wks gestation - baby will come when it is done and no sooner so it doesn't mean that by going 'over' baby will be bigger at all.

There is also a very very small percentage of women who have pelvis' too small for bubs to fit through - most commonly it is that the baby is in the wrong position for birth and not that it is too big, not to say that baby can't be too big, but optimal fetal positioning and upright birthing positions are all conducive to effectively birthing your baby.

I was told by both my ob's that it's usually the fathers birth weight that is a good indication of what to expect. Dh was 6lb 8oz my ds was 6lb 8oz (freeky!) and dd was 6lb 3oz. But I'm sure alot of things can effect birth weight.

I was 7lb 11oz. Not sure what weight my hubby was but apparently he had a massive head when he was born. My daughter was 6lb 7oz.

    OMG @ a 13lb baby. Ouch.

My DS was 2 weeks overdue and only 6lb 14 so try not to worry too much. I thought the birth weight was more from the Mums side of the family but maybe that's just and old wives tale. I am one of four and we were all smallish (under 7.5lb) and my Mum was only 5 lb so who knows!

i think it is all genetics of both parents.
    i was 6lb 6 - not sure what hubby was - and Ashley was 5lb 13.
i hope all my bubs are little like us cause ouch to pushing out those bigger bubs
(all power to those mums!! hugs)

I don't think it has anything to do with the parents birth weight - DH and I were both 6lb when we were born and our kids have been DS 7lb9oz, DD1 7lb10oz and DD2 9lb9oz! I don't know why Matilda was so much bigger than the other two - she was 41 weeks, but so was Grace and she was only 7lb.

    Hi Nikki,
I have been told by my Dr that your birth wieght and your partners will give you an indication of what your baby might be. There are of course other facts, but it is and indication!
I'm not sure of my parents birth weights, but I was 7lb 12 and hubby was 5lb 13, so we're not expecting a huge baby.

I don't think it anything to do with the parents more so how you eat and what you eat when your pregnant and what goes on with your body.
I was 7'6 and and Dh was 8 and we had a 4 '2 baby and looks like this one is going to be little too .. prob doesnt help that im little lol
