i'm 25 wks and i went to the doc today and the gp gave me the results of my 21 wk ultrasound and said i have to go for a follow up ultrasound at approx 34 wks due to my placenta being posterior and only 2.5 cm away from my cervix. she said its supposed to be a bit more away (i can't remember how far she said) and hopefully it will have moved by the next scan. is this at all dangerous., and has anyone else had this and it hasn't moved up.?
the posterior part isn't the problem - essentially that just means that bub is sitting in front of your placenta. the distance to the cervix is prolly the problem - if the placenta is too close to the cervix, it can impact labour (i think it's called placenta previa - there are lots of threads on it) . the hope would be that as your pregnancy progresses, the placenta retracts a little and ends up further away from the cervix so as not to cause you dramas in labour
I'm in the same situation as you but have been told not to worry. I wouldn't worry too much. The chance of your placenta not moving up is pretty slim. They couldn't even tell where my placenta stopped (except that it wasn't covering the cervix) cos bub's head was in the way and they didn't seem worried. My midwife isn't worried either. If it was across the cervix in any way, then they'd probably speak to you about a c/s. Please don't worry about it until you have to. It's one of those things that probably won't happen. The posterior bit is NOTHING to worry about at all. It just means that you get to feel more kicks than someone with an anterior placenta. I'm amazed at how many kicks I'm feeling as I had an anterior placenta with DD and this time it's totally more intense.
ahh ok then, i got it. i'm not too worried now.
my doc asked me if i'd been feeling heaps of movement, and said it was due to the posterior position, yeah i've been feeling lots of movement which has been so good.
Hi Beau
2.5cm is far enough away from your cervix and most doctors/midwives would be happy for you to have a vaginal birth. There is also a very high chance that your placenta will move further away from your cervix in the next few weeks. I'm sure that everything will be fine
I have been in this position for all 3 of my pregnancies and the last two (still waiting on this one) moved up with no problems at all. This time placenta is only 1.2 cm away from the cervix so I am hoping this one will be all good too. Hey, the other upside is you get to have an extra ultra sound and see your bub!!! Good Luck and keep us posted!!
