    Gastro won't hurt bub, right?

Ok so I know it SHOULDN'T hurt baby, but I'd just like reassurance.

I copped my second bout of gastro (caught from DS) for this pregnancy last week. Severe vomiting (ended up in hossie for a day on drip & zofran) and then a few days later got the runs (OMG never again pls ). Couldn't get out of bed/toilet for the better part of the week, head spins if I get up too quick and just absolutely exhausted. Am slowly on the mend now. I know (theoretically) that baby takes what it needs (and I get what's left - ha!), but I just want to be sure. Is there anything I should get checked (i.e. bug tests etc)? I think I can still feel faint movement and I have my 20wk scan soon - I just don't want to hear in 3 weeks that I should have been checked for some particular bug or other.

Also, I'm thinking best way to try & avoid in future? I'm thinking just probiotics? Any other suggestions cos I really really really don't want to get this again.

    TIA
    Belfie
    P.S. woot - second trimester!

You poor thing Belfie. I don't have any official info for you just wanted to send some hugs your way. I had gastro about a month ago when I was 20 weeks, nothing like what you have but I also ended up on hospital on the drip and it is definitely a very scary thing. Bubs and I both came out ok in the end. I have heard that each time you have gastro you become immune to that particular bug (someone else correct me if I am wrong). Anyway, I hope you are feeling better soon, my only tip for future avoidance is to keep hygienic and always wash hands after being out (shopping, docs etc.)

Hi Belfie, I had gastro a couple of times during my second pregnancy (had never had it in my life prior to that time!). I didn't get it as badly as you obviously have, but short answer (for me) was no ... it didn't affect bub one iota. I saw my GP not long after my second bout, and she wasn't worried about bub either as I too was feeling movement etc after having had the gastro bug.

Not sure about how you can avoid it. Like having a cold or something, it can strike when you least expect it. I'd imagine probiotics would help more in your recovery than actually helping you avoid it though. I'm no medico, but maybe your best defence is to keep up good hygiene habits - wash hands after supermarket trips etc, plus try and steer clear of anyone who's got it. Not so easy with a toddler though ....

Good luck - hope you feel better soon.

I had gastro 5 times when pregnant with DD1, a couple of times with DD2. They were always fine, its just us that suffer

Bubs definitely takes what they need from you, and you're probably dizzy cos there's not much left for you!! Keep up your fluids and try to rest as much as you can. Gastro can really take it out of you (so to speak..)

Grab yourself some of that waterless hand gel and use it ...all the time. I have a small one in my bag and we have a pump container in the kitchen. The kids are really good and know that they need to use it before eating etc. Gastro is horrid and I wouldnt wish it on anyone...its good to try and get little ones into hand hygiene as early as you can.

Hugs Belfie, hope you've seen the last of it!

I had gastro a couple of times with my other pregnancies, pretty sure the only thing you have to be careful of is your hydration. Once you're better, you're better.
Probiotics would be a good idea, some yoghurt or something.
