Stabbing pain in hip/lower back - Help!

Lately, I've had a shooting/stabbing pain off and on in my one hip/lower back. I've had it before with my other pregnancies, and I've spoken to other mums who've experienced the same thing, so I'm assuming it has to do with loosening ligaments, or the position of the baby, pinching a nerve, or just aggravating something! I'm not concerned that it is a symptom of some problem - I'm fairly sure it's just one of those things that happens during pregnancy.
But what I haven't heard from anyone is whether I can do something about it! It comes and goes, and some days are fine, while others (like today!) I can barely walk! Is there a stretch, or an exercise, or a way of sitting, or something like that which might help alleviate this problem? I'm open to suggestions - this really hurts!

Tomorrow, I will be 22 weeks. I definitely relate my symptoms to you. Life you said, some days, there's no pain. But other days, I find myself limping because of pain in one hip. I went to see my doctor today, and she suggested me to rest when the pain kicks in (if possible). Also, do Kegal exercise (sitting like doing Yoga which helps your ligaments to relax). She did mentioned if the pain become unbearable, i could try take acetaminophen. One more thing, when you sleep, try to have a pillow between your legs assuming you sleep in your side. Hope this helps. If you have any new ways of relieving your pain, let me know!

Wow, I am 23 weeks pregnant and since last Tuesday I've been experiencing the same pain. I'm limping and can barely walk sometimes. I bought myself a heat wheat bag and sometimes that helps.

It's not sciatica? I got that pain in the later stages of my first pregnancy...it was like someone kicked you really hard just above the butt cheek on the left hip (lower back). That's what mine was diagnosed as....the massage to relieve it can be a little painful initially but it was well worth having it done to release the pain. I didn't have the massage while pregnant though.

Thanks ladies! I don't know if this is sciatica or not. It does not shoot down my leg, which I thought was quite common with that. It is more like being stabbed right at the base of my spine, towards my left hip. It hurts when I put weight on that leg, and it can make me catch my breath involuntarily. However, I have tried sleeping with a pillow between my knees, and so for, so good! It hasn't happened again. Hurray! Let's hope it stays that way.

Mine is not sciatica. My doctor confirmed it with me that it is normal to get that hip/pelvic pain around this stage. Actually, she mentioned that it will be occuring from now until the end of my pregnancy, just depending how severe. The pain is not unbearable, but I have to say that it is nagging because it goes on and off. Some days, I am limping, and some days, I go by without haviny any discomfort. I think the best solution that I have concluded to be so far is trying to rest when the pain kicks in. I have found nothing else to be better and do not want to take anything for the pain.

Cricket, I am experiencing the same thing as you, the pain is really at my left hip. Occassionally, I feel my muscles pulling on both side of my pelvis, but nothing major. Hope the pain goes away for us soon!
