    34 weeks sizing scan

Due to GD, I was sent for a 34 week sizing and wellbeing scan. I know the scans aren't particularly accurate, but I was wondering what the average size for this gestation is? My baby is approximately 2.6kg (5lb 11oz). Would this be considered big? I am worried that the doctors are going to pressure me to induce at 38 weeks if baby is looking to be on the big side.

@ 35 wks he was 6 lbs already and he was born spot on 8 lbs ....

so i dont think they would pressure you .... i hope they dont any way ....

after your scan you may think a bit differently ... hope it goes well any way ...

my friend had a bub who was 9lb15 he was and still is a whopper

oh... another friend who is a tiny size 6 gave birth to a 9lb 12 baby girl, she had GD too

It is hospital policy to induce GD mums at 38 weeks. I am just hoping they don't consider him/her to be too big as I have my BSL under control with insulin and it seems there are more risks involved in induction than there are going to term.

It seems a little unfair, I suspected I would have a 8-9lb baby right from the start - my family just has big babies. Now if he/she is big they are going to say it is from the diabetes.

hey Art, I was wondering how you got on with your scan. I would say that at this stage of pg that bubs 'estimated' size isn't too bad at all really. The weekly pg emails I get said that at 34wks bubs is about 2.35kg, so only 250gm under what your estimate was and genetics rather than the GD could be the factor in bubs' size already. So I reckon your bubs will be a good size, but nothing huge kwim? especially since your family tends to have larger babies. Like you, big babies just seem to happen alot in my family too.

From previous things you've said, I reckon you should pursue why they want to induce at 38wks, and try to convince them otherwise if that's what you want. I have every confidence that you can birth a big baby hun.

If that scan is correct your not doing too bad size wise.

I also had GD with first bub and had a scan at 33 weeks - she was estimated to be 6lbs exactly then. She was born three weeks later and weighed 7lb 3oz - so assuming that she put on about half pound per week (which is about right at the end) her ultrasound estimate would have been very close to her actual weight at the time.

Unfortunately with GD even if baby isn't "big" they will still want to find all sorts of reasons to induce. They just like to get them out around 38-39 weeks because they start to worry about placental deterioration. If you want to avoid induction I'd suggest getting a plan in place for regular monitoring in the last few weeks etc because I can pretty much guarantee you that regardless of bubs size they will start pushing for an induction just because you have GD. It's just the "standard" model of care at the moment.
