From what my Obs said to me, means that your doctor can feel 4/5 of the head - but sounds like bubs has started to engage. Once the babys head is at 1/5 or 0 stage this means they are fully engaged.

Babies head is no longer mobile so it has started to enagage into your pelvis. 4/5 of head is able to be palpated on abdominal palp.

Ah! I've been wondering that- my OB wrote 3-4/5 on my chart, so I imagine that my baby's a tiny bit more engaged.
How to get said baby to move further down is the next question...

It can be confusing as some Drs/Obs count it different ways - some will start at 5/5 and work down to 2/5 being fully engaged. Others work the other way meaning that 2/5 is the start and 5/5 is engaged. Is this the first time he has written 4/5 on your card? If it isn't, the first measurement would have been 5/5. HTH
