Angry Major - Not happy Jan!

    Hi

Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else? Was with my OB today for standard visit and he just drops into conversation that if baby comes on due date or early he won't be here as he's on holidays.

Now I've got just under 8 weeks to go and he has been booked as my OB since I was 2 weeks pregnant (IVF baby so you find out really early). We've already paid the majority of his fees but now it appears we are paying him money for something he may not even be around for. As you can imagine I'm not really impressed.

He comes back from his holidays on the day after my due date so given that this is my first in all probability I won't go early or on time so he will be there but I don't think that is the point. Surely if you book an OB you can expect that he won't take holidays around your due dates. And when he is taking bookings he would block out periods during the year where he wouldn't be there.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Before i booked in with mine I had to submit paperwork with my due date etc to make sure he'd be available around my due date and also to make sure he didn't already have too many other patients due around this time.
So, to me this would get on my goat too!

    YUP!!!
I had a real big whinge about my OB (in another thread). She keeps going on holidays and said dont worry another OB will fill in for her, one which I have never met and I chose her for a reason as i was very adamant i wanted a female OB.

    It really was unrequired stress!

Sorry this had to happen to you =(

Yep Meadsie this is happening to me too. He tells me that he is going to induce me at 38 weeks due to my diabetes and a high risk pregnancy but hang on.... when he checks his calendar he is on holidays so now I have to wait till he gets back to be induced which is closer to 39 weeks.

Yeah, I have to say this has happened to me... and I wasn't told until the day my waters broke!

My OB said - I can induce you today if you want me to do it, otherwise if you wait til tomorrow I'll be having the weekend off at my farm!

    AAAAAAAARGGGGGGGGGGGGH!

In the end I waited because I wanted my body to do what it had to do when it was ready... and his filler inner man, who I'd never met, was fabulous.

I think a lot of OB's have job sharing arrangements in place and in my case, mine was on two weekends a month.

You do feel a bit ripped off tho, having paid all your money etc, and then ending up showing your bits to someone you've never even had a chat with!

Well at least I'm not the only one it happened to ... but still a bit shocked - especially as he's gone for a full month. I agree with ChickenLittle you feel a bit ripped off to pay all this money (and my guy is more expensive than most) to have someone else do the job. I know that they are entitled to holidays but think a little bit of planning could have been done here - block out time during the year that you take holidays and don't take on patients who fall due during that period !!!! Don't think its rocket science.

Anyways enough of whinge - I know it will be fine as the guy who is his filler in actually delivered my OBs own daughters child so he must be good !!!!

    How frustrating!

My SIL was induced a week after her due date because her ob was going on holidays .

I have been lucky enough to have my EDD's fall when my OB wasn't having holidays but he didn't make it to the birth of my 4th due to a family commitment and me having a rather fast labour that he couldn't make it to, though he did come in when I had a secondary PPH 2 hours later.

He works with a group that all back eachother up so perhaps you could find out if your OB does something similar and arrange to meet with the other OB before the birth.

I know it's not the thing you want to hear but there is no guarantee that the OB will make it anyway. If it is a particularly busy day or an emergency pops up then you will get someone else because they won't leave someone in theatre

Thanks - I know that he's had a long time relationship with the OB who looks after his practice when he's on leave and visa-versa.

My next visit with him is in fortnights time and then after that I get handed over to the new guy and will have one fortnightly and four weekly with the new guy who'll look after me if I go early or on time. Or if I'm late (which will probably be the case) my guy will be back. As IVF baby will only allow me to go max of week over - no question about the dates when its IVF !!!!
