Hi all - I know that swelling of the hands, feet and legs is very common but the last few days, my swelling hasn't been going away! I wake up in the morning with hot swollen, tingly hands and my feet don't feel like my own when I walk (hobble) on them. Basically none of my shoes fit either.......... Is this normal and should I be getting used to this for the next 9 (potentially 11!!!) weeks?
It could just be absolutely normal, but swelling can also be a sign of pre-eclampsia - in which case it is usually accompanied by raised bp and protein in the urine. I had borderline p/e while I was pg and it was the swelling that wasn't going down overnight which made me get it checked out. I'd had low bp all along but then it suddenly shot up between appointments. A friend of mine had lots of swelling but was fine otherwise though.
I'd get it checked out if I were you, just to be sure.
I used accupunture and massage (feet 3 times a day by the end!) to relieve it.
ETA: sorry, I was distracted by small whinging child! I means to say good luck too
If it's changed, if it's a lot more than what is usual for you, then it can't hurt to get it checked.
It's probably normal swelling but better to be safe, you know?
Thanks Balmaingal - I have an Ob appt next Friday so I will try and hold out until then being with the long weekend and all. I am just hoping that the cooler weather today will help me out.
aww hun, the Drs & midwives would always rather you come in if in doubt
If you get a headache, blurry vision, pain in your upper abdomen, go in to hospital.
Oh & in the meantime - put your feet up & rest! Get your DH to wait on you hehe
It's great to see you in the 3rd tri! I too have had lots of swelling this pregnancy, i have had it checked out a few times but it seems everything is ok, i just swell.
If you have any acute swelling, or it changes dramatically get it checked out asap.
I have only one pair of shoes that fit, and bought another pair that are 4 sizes bigger than my usual size! i sure hope they go back to normal later.
If you are having pain, a physio can help. My hands get really sore, because the nerves going through the wrist are being compressed by the swelling. The physio showed me, and my partner, how to gently massage the fluid away from the hands. Also wearing tubigrip on your hands and forearms can help, as well as keeping your arms high when you can- rest them on your belly or a pillow over night.
When the shops open back up tomorrow just pop into a Chemist and get your BP tested hunny, just be on the safe side, it's free and there are no Dr's to worry about. Always good to be safe sweets although I'm sure things are just fine. I know I like to be reassured!
Take care hun and do your best to keep your feet up over the long weekend.
I was massively fluidy with Max....I had carpel tunnel (the horrible hand thing) and had feet the size of Chubacka's!! My face was VERY round (as my renewed drivers licence photo proves!) They always kept an eye on my BP and protein etc and I never had an issue....it was just fluid. I could even see it bulging around in my feet.
Try and take it easy, keep your feet up when you can, but like Pishy said, maybe just pop into the chemist to get your BP checked.
I'm lucky this time I have no swelling at all, I am actually quite weirded out by that fact! It's nice though.
You still look beautiful though, so don't worry about that
Kate, yeah my feet went back to my normal size, but you can see they stretched and went back....they have feet stretch marks....so more cracky than they ever were before especially around the heels. I think my swelling went away pretty quickly, and the awful carpel tunnel definitely disappeared...It was so long ago now, plus having the baby made my body grossness irrelevant!
Kate - I am stoked to be in the third trimester You must not have very long to go now - anyday right?
Minimax - compliments make your comment my fave - hee hee. I'll head to the chemist tomorrow, might have to check out those ugly compression stockings......
Pish - thanks for the tips Had my feet up all afternoon but they are still puffy. Hope that this is not the way they are going to be forever.
