Engaging early - Alan??

Hi everyone,

I am almost 33weeks preg now at my 31w appt I was told bubs was 3/5 engaged, he was also 3/5 engaged at 32w appt too. I asked the dr at the 31w appt if I would have my bub early and he said yes probably. Anyway I'm just wondering if anyone can give me a bit more info on the likelyhood that I will go early, also I have Gestational Diabetes if that makes a difference. Also if I do go early how early will I go? Thanks for any info u can give!

Is this your first bub Jas? I know that it isn't that uncommon for a first time mother to engage early. One of the ladies in our BB group is preg. with her 3rd bubba and she has been engaged 2/5 since from about the 33/34 week mark, and she is still waiting for her bubba to arrive, though I don't think it will be too much longer for her Also, some women go into early labour not being engaged at all (me at 32 weeks). So you might go early!! Fingers crossed for you though, he doesn't come until your ready

I think every body is uniquely different and at the end of the day bubs will only come when he/she is ready, or if he/she becomes too impatient.

I sometimes wish that we aren't told 'you might go early' because you spend the rest your pregnancy wondering if every niggle or pain is the start of something big. I know I have and starting to become impatient with it all.

Your baby engaging does not mean that you will go early. As Mummy Mel said it is very common for first time babies to engage early. On the other hand it does not mean that you wont go early.

Hi Jas,
I'll answer your q in relation to the GD. I have GD, controlled via diet & exercise so my OBS wouldn't induce me however did say that if I was on insulin and was having a difficult time controlling the GD that I would have been induced from 38 weeks onwards. I would speak to your OBS/midwife to discuss same.

I was told the exact same thing and look at me now!
Overdue and waiting for an induction next week!
not saying you wont go early, but try to believe if anything you'll go on time!
Ever since i got told, i have thought every BH or anything else has been the beg, but wasnt. I am now so emotionally and physically exhausted, just from being "ready" for so long!
I know its easier said then done, but just for your sanity, if you believe you'll go on time, you wont be dissapointed if you go on time/late, and it'll be a real bonus if you do go early!

im 34 weeks and saw my ob today and she said my baby was starting to engage. is this too early? she also said that the baby is slightly larger then average so she is going to do a scan in 2 weeks and if it is still bigger then average she may recommend inducing me at 38 weeks. i really dont want to have to be induced though. maybe ill go early without being induced...

Sara, I don't think it's too early for you to engage. Same as Jas, it's not uncommon to engage early, and it doesn't mean you'll necessarily go early either. Just means for body is preparing itself nice and early, bubs won't come until he/she is ready. And in regards to the size of your bubba, you can always refuse to be induced, because your carer THINKS your carrying a big bubba. You might just be carrying alot of amionic fluid, so you appear to be larger, but the scan should be able to give more of a correct ESTIMATE, but just remember scan measurements are only a ESTIMATE too, alot of mothers are told bubs will be big or small only for them to be born the other. It's definately a personal choice about inductions or not, for me unless I was told that bubs is in danger I'd be more inclined to hang out and hope my body takes the right course on it's own when the time in right, and if I had already started to engage at 34 weeks I would be confident to think that it will be able to.

thanks mummy mel. last scan i had the ob told me there wasnt an excess of amniotic fluid. ill wait for the next scan and see what happens.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I feel a lot more settled now, to be honest I am still feeling impatient but I've got to the stage now where I realise that it really isn't very long before I get to meet my baby, whether I go early or late, and I'm just going to use these last weeks to get as organised as possible!
