Laura its sounds exactly wat happend to me i had high blood pressure in the last few weeks and i was at the hospital almost everyday being monited very stressful and i thought well then y not induce me? everytime i went for my appointment the doc would take my blood pressure and it would be high then he would send me up to the monitering ward and it would be fine and bub was fine. so doc said just keep coming back ...so when i reached 40 weeks and still no bub and still had high blood pressure i thought well come on lets induce me now but doc wanted to let me go to see if i would go naturally as he said thats the best option..so at the hospital everyday then i go all the way till 41+1 and they induce me. the week before i had a stretch and sweep and most of that week i had like period pains..when i got to hospital to be induced i was already 3cms so those pains were doing something, they still went ahead with the induction breaking my water then puttin the drip in. i was pretty calm as i new it was coming and it wasnt to bad i thought that the drip would bring the contractions on strong but it wasnt turned up very strong so it was alright..but everyone is different so i wish u the best of luck and i hope bub comes soon

It's happening to me at the moment, I have consistently high BP, previous history of HELLP, but only trace of protein. I actually refused to go in for daily monitoring this week as it's a 3 hour round trip, told them if I needed that they can induce me, it's just physically not possible.

Instead, their solution was to start me on BP meds this late in pregnancy and I go back in a week

I'm just hoping like you I go into labour soon. I've only basically got 10 days left where my mum can stay and watch my other kids, so I don't know what I can do if I go overdue short of taking the kids with me. I just feel like crying at the moment, I can soo understand.

Well i hope everything goes ok for you tara and thanks for you reply blanchie much appreciated! Im thinking that doc will either suggest induction next week as il be 39+2 or do what happened to you put me on meds which y didnt they do that earlier... and then say he would rather me go naturally but i think thats y he wants to see me mon to talk about it and check me as i was in hospital over night 2 weeks ago and he seen me then so he said he would like to see me again to see what he thinks this time!! But im hoping i go naturally as with the tightenings and lil pains i keep having midwife thinks it is early stages so jus waiting game 4 now and if nothing then see doc mon and if he suggests to leave me then i got midwife mon aswell for a check and sweep so either way i soooo hope she is here v soon... nice to know someone is going through the same as me as its very emotional for me right now i just want her out Its funny as i have the same every week i see midwife trace of protein, high bp,babys heart rate is very fast but then again she can v active at times then she slows right down then when im up hospital me and baby end up fine Only 8 days to go so lets hope like you that she arrives b4 and this whole situation will end as my mum had high bp with me and was enduced week early so think doc may suggest the same let just wait and see... Good luck to you tara fingers crossed your baby arrives soon xXx Thanks again for your replys!!

    Hi Laura
You did not say what your BP was or what your baby’s heart rate was.
With an induction there is always the chance of further intervention, spinal, vacuum, forceps and even C/S.
There are 3 main ways of induction.

    Breaking your waters.
    Can bring on labour
    Labour can be more painful
    Chance of foetal distress
Chance of cord prolapse if done by an inexperienced person
May lead to C/S if you do not go into labour soon after it is done

    Prostin Gel
A Gel placed close to your cervix.
Can ripen the cervix and thus bring on labour
    Contractions may be more painful
Can lead to hypertonic uterus (contractions that do not stop) and this can cause your uterus to rupture.

    Syntocinon Drip
A needle is put in your arm and ou are connected to a drip into which syntocinin is added.
    Contractions are much more painful
    Can cause uterine rupture
Most hospital insist on constant FHR
May lead to a spinal, vacuum, forceps, C/S

If you have any more questions I will be happy to answer them

    Hi Laura
Your BP is hovering around the maximum that we like to see however it is not high enough to need an induction providing that the urine test is OK.
Your baby’s heart rate should normally be between 110 and 160 but this can go up much higher when the baby is active.
Personally I would advise against an induction at this stage. But just remember that I don’t know all your history or all the details of your tests.
Have you tried using raspberry leaf tea and evening primrose oil? These can help to bring on labour naturally.

Alan- Well iv had trace of protein and once had a big sign of protein and got told other day that needed to be put on antibiotics for 5 days as they found an infection in my urine but thats about it. Im kinda thinkin i dnt want to be induced as yet as im hoping if i can jus have a sweep with midwife monday as planned and with the signs i been having already i can start on my own... so rasberry tea and bathin in primrose oil is good is it? Maybe i will try that i have also been eating pineapple as been told thats good too and also been walkin up and down stairs alot and squatting is that all u can do to help bring it on? Yeah babys heart rate always goes up when shes active but on average is 150-160 beats which with it being a girl i guess is right anyway lol!

Rayray- For now i dont think i wanna do acupuncture or reflexology but i will keep that in mind thanks anyway! Will def have a good read of that natural induction methods article thats brill thanks alot.

Acupuncture or refelxology might be useful as well, WRT bringing on labour.

There is an article on the main Bellybelly site here on natural induction methods.

I was induced at 10 days overdue, with prostin gel, I only needed the one lot of gel, and that was it. I did have gas, but was quite happy to have that, and found even after the induciton my hospital were really supportive of my birth plan.

First time mummy, your BP is much the same as mine, although mine went higher a week ago. Up and down.

I am finding by having a 'week off' not going into the hospital, I think that will help alone bring on labour naturally. I was having to go in every day to every two days and that alone was a big stress, getting different answers from different doctors on shift. Some freaking out about it and talking induction, others saying it's just a mild BP problem. That was very stressful for me and I would end up in tears, especially since my mum came up early based on that I was told I'd be induced but then it all changed.

So my time out has gone for two days now and I'm feeling much better not going in. I'm not at all saying to ignore what the hospital tells you, in my case like I said it was a 3 hour round trip and this was significantly affecting our lives, our business, finances and my two other children and just got to a point that made it impossible, which is why I said induction if I had to do that. Hence them meeting me half way with BP meds. I reckon not going in a lone has brought down my BP, I haven't felt like that for two days which is unusual and I've only just started my meds.

I really hope things settle for you too hun, all I can suggest is that you try your hardest to try and relax and basically accept the situation and just concentrate on relaxing so your body will do what it's supposed to do. One thing I do know is anxiety and stress will hold up labour coming naturally and that's why i'm doing my best to just stay as calm as I can whilst I am having my 'holiday' from hospital visits. I so so so understand that it's very hard to just relax about this.

    Hi 1st time mum2be

I'm a first time mum too and I found out at 18w that I will be induced at about 37w.
So I've had lots of time to think about, ask about and research inductions. The most helpful thing though was speaking to a midwife at John Hunter Hospital where I am to deliver and she gave me the run down of their normal procedures for induction. I know that things may vary somewhat but it was reasurring to learn the general gist of things.

Depending on how ripe your cervix is they may need to ripen it for you first in the way of Prostin Gel. (Seeing you are close to term you may well be 'ripe' already though. They do a test beforehand called the bishops test to tell how ripe you are).

An alternative to the prostin gel (and its risk of effects as outlined by Alan) is Cervadil, which is what they use at JHH. Cervadil is a papery mesh thing with a string which they wrap around your cervix and it releases the meds. It can be left in for 12 hours but can be pulled out at anytime with the string should it start to work too well or cause undesirable effects. This is the main difference from the gel, which, once it's in it's in. Try and find out what your hospital uses.

At JHH, when your cervix is favourable they break your waters and starts the drip. In the Birth Plan article here in BB there are some great ideas to add to your birth plan about the use of the drip. For example, having it turned down once labour is established. Be sure to take a look as it is fantastic.

All the best to you, I know you read and hear alot of comments about being induced, ie. 'dont do it' but just remember that the safe arrival of your bub is the most important thing. Each situation is unique and sometimes totally out of ones hands, like in my case. I don't mind all the intervention (I don't know any different!) or even a c-s, so long as my baby arrives safe and sound.

    Love August

With my DD I was induced. I saw a fantastic chinese doctor in Sydney to try to induce the labor with accupuncture. While the accupunture did help, it didnt start my contractions... I then was booked into the hospital at 38+ w and given prostin gel & within hours I was in labor. Sure it was painful and my contractions were very strong. However there are positives too. It was nice to be organised and in a controlled environment while in all stages of labor - no suprises in the middle of the night. There is usually a very good reason why a doctor wants to induce - and I guess they make the safest suggestion for you & your bub. Best Wishes, Sarah

    Hi Laura
The evening primrose oil come in a capsule. You take it orally as directed on the bottle but you also insert 2-3 capsules high into your vagina when going to be. Put a pad on because it can get a bit messy when you stand up.

Thats brill everyone thanks for your replys! Have taken it all in!

Alan- Thanks ever so much for all this help means alot, well iv started having rasberry leaf tea now which is actually quite nice and i am getting evening primrose oil capsules 2moro so if i insert them in vagina i need to put a pad there i will makesure i do so dnt like mess lol!

    UPDATE:

I spoke to my midwife yesterday as i had to inform her of doc app at hospital wanting to see me monday morning to talk about me always being taken up the hospital and then sent home again and induction may get talked about she said pretty much the same as u alan and she is dead against me being induced at this moment in time and she said doctor will say the same as bp isnt bad enough for me to be induced and its just one of those things i have now and again but isnt any worry as such for now as urine ect is always fine except for trace of protein and babys heart rate is always high when she is active which is common anyway so its nice to know it looks as though induction will not be happening unless over due or there is any major concerns especially when high bp does run in my family but is high enough for them just to want me to be checked to be on the safe said then when i am me and baby are fine and sent home just feeling now if midwife says im in very early stages of labor i just feel like im waiting and i want my lil girl to arrive soon but after docs monday my midwife wants to see me at home for a sweep and hopefully my cervix is rippening like she thinks it could aswell be anyway and then by her doing the sweep she will be able to see if it is soft and hopefully the sweep should help me along IF i dont go in before then which like midwife said she hopes that does happen but my baby will only come when she is good and ready and just got to be a lil more patient with her which when she does arrive it will be all worth it in the end! So induction will prob not be happening unless theres any major concerns with me and baby which for now there isnt, just hope that i go in natural labor v soon and if not the sweep monday will help me along!

Thanks to you all for your great advice and help much appreciated!

    Take care, laura xxx
