Hi all,
According to a blood test result which I wasnt allowed to see - I have GD. So yesterday they gave me the finger ***** machine and it's not the pain in struggling with, it's the thought - its the emotional struggle with it - four times a day I sit at the table and cry with the fact in about to hurt myself - that's where my problem comes in. I know this is disgusting - but I picked at a scab this morning to get blood rather then do the test, does it matter where the blood comes from? Is there something associated with the finger? Has anyone else done something different? I'm also feeling quite cheated because as soon as I got he test and did my first one there I haven't ever had a high reading after meals - in fact im no where near a high reading - the fasting blood level in the mornings can be a little high - im happy with the diet and I'm finding it quite easy - but my emotional thought and feeling on that needle is something I can't bear in feeling depressed over it. Help :-(
Err, didn't realize it was going to block that word lol I should add too - my initial reading of what I could see of the result was 6.6 for the fasting - which is higher - this morning it was down to 6.2 while all my other tests two hours after food was all well under the 6.8 they say (latest one was 5.1). Is this something I need a second opinion on? Or discuss it with my doctor next time. If it weren't for the fact I had to do that horrible task of getting blood I wouldnt have an issue..
I am phobic with needles and I was able to get away with the needle only being on 1. For me I just had to keep telling myself this is for my baby. It isn't actually as bad I thought. Could your DH do it for you?
It doesn't matter the location of the blood either...
Your readings sound very normal to me - random samples in a non diabetics should be between 3.2 and 7.7 (I'm not a doctor but that is the range the lab I work at uses) I have recently heard of doctors interpreting a borderline result as GD, rather than doing the extended test as they believe that that test will give the same results. In alot of borderline cases, further testing actually shows that there is no GD. If you haven't already been retested with the longer test I would suggest that you ask your doctor for it, or for them to show you the results from your last test that shows very abnormal results. Good luck!!
Why weren't you able to see the blood test result?
I would ask for a copy of it, to take to my GP. Or if that is your GP, to take to another GP for a second opinion.
Or I'd go to another GP and ask for a referral for another blood test.
I would not want to be effectively treated incorrectly (ie: for a condition a may not actually have).
And I would ask that other GP your questions about whether the blood can be taken from other places, etc. I would have thought it might affect your results - I know that some times with my finger jabs they need to squeeze the finger several times to get the non-surface blood out, to get an accurate reading.
Lots of the things they will tell you to do in terms of eating well, etc, are things which I imagine you would be doing anyway, but I would want to be confident that my physician was only treating me for things I actually have, ITMS.
I would ask for your results and a second opinion. In regards to where you are getting the blood from I had a high reading once from giving my dd a banana and not wiping it off enough with the swab. I was rushed onto insulin which I reacted too and was able to manage fine on diet. It does seem to be over diagnosed. I know they liked me to be 5.5 or under in the mornings but I was always around 6 with the rest of my readings were below the range.
on my testing kit it shows a heap of places on the body you can take the test. And its says the shown pictures are generally the least sensitive. I always assumed blood is blood.
I failed both tests, but was more borderline if anything. The dietician explained to me they would rather treat you as if you are diabetic because otherwise it could be worse for the baby.
I controlled mine through diet, i think it was the best thing for my pregnancy. I didnt put on barely any extra weight and i felt great for a lot longer. To me, even though i was in no mans land as far as blood sugar, treating it as worst case was better for me.
Hi girls and thanks for the replies. Again after lunch my reading was low again so I'm thinking I'm going to go and see my GP tomorrow - and discuss the issue with her - I did the 3 blood test/ before the drink, hour after and an hour after that. The woman who told me I had GD yesterday I wouldn't even know who she was, I'm unsure if she's even a doctor. She held her hand over the paperwork, pointed out the one reading of 6.6 before food but showed me nothing else. I'm really happy sticking to the diet as I feel ore in control - but I don't see the point doing four tests a day if I don't appear to be suffering from high readings. On my testing kit it says under 5 I in the mornings and under 6.8 after meals.
Have made an appointment with GP tomorrow to discuss it and ask for another test. In my stomach I feel like something just isn't right with how thus has all played out
