Just wondering how common it might be to experience NO braxton hicks or tightenings etc - particularly with a first baby? I am nearing 39 weeks and haven't experienced anything so far that feels like what people describe as BH - has anyone else had this happen (or NOT happen as is the case!!)
I wouldn't worry about it too much. I didn't get a single one with my first pregnancy & I went into labour on my own at 6 days post dates. With my second pregnancy I only had a few towards the end & even then they weren't too bad, again I went into labour naturally this time at 10 days post dates.
You probably are getting them but you may not be feeling them. I could only feel a few with my first bubs but like blayne said, I'm getting them so strongly this time I keep thinking I am in labour as well!
I got none at all with my first bubs, the only hint of anything at all was some period-like pain the night before I went into labour (which I am getting on & off much earlier now )
Had plenty of BH with the following bubs though!
I didn't get any with my first bub either and with this bub I have had them really bad. I got one in woolies today and I couldn't move even though I was in people's way and had all the women at the service desk staring at me, I think they thought I was going to have my bub there in front of them .
I didn`t get any with my first but this baby (#3) is making up for it, have been getting BH`s since 15 weeks and the last 2 weeks they have been quite painfull at times.
lolly - I had nothing with DS. The first sign I had that I was having a baby was on the day he was born - when I went in to labour. It would have to be pretty common with the first baby.
I'm having BH this time around though. Very different pgs.
I have had 2kids and didn't have any with either. It doesn't mean anything as when I had a VE I was 3cm (not in labour with no1) and with no2 I was 4cm with no pain what so ever. I think ryatha is right. Your probably getting them but not feeling them. Often women are hooked up to the CTG (for monitoring bubs heart rate) and it picks up BH and tightenings when the woman isn't feeling them.
I only felt BH at one occasion with DD and it freaked me out. I had just started drinking Raspberry Leaf Tea and started with 3 cups straight away. I think I was about 33 weeks and got sooo worried that this might be the start of labour. I cut back to 1 cup a day for a while and slowly built up to 3 over a few weeks. I never felt BH again.
I think it is not uncommon not to feel them. But I'm sure you're having them. I remember my MW feeling my belly sometimes and telling me when I was having a BH but I was completely unaware that it was happening.
I had 1/2 day of them the week before my 1st DD was born and with my 2nd none. I was waiting for them as was told everyone gets them but yep missed out.
Don't worry as it sounds like you are one of the lucky ones with no BH's
Yeah. I think it's a case of - You are having them - you just don't know it. Either because they're so subtle, you may be mistaking them for the baby moving, or you just don't know what you're looking for. I think the latter was possible for me with DS. Maybe I just had no idea and was expecting something different.
Not a thing with my first until pre labour... then that lasted for weeks and I was so over it when I finally popped her out.. that wasnt until after my due date too.
I agree - you're probably just not noticing them. A friend of mine didn't think she was having any either til she was at an antenatal appointment. The midwife could feel the Braxton Hicks while her hand was on her belly but my friend had no idea.
none with my first bub who delivered at 37weeks after 26hrs and started feeling them at about 17 weeks with number 2, i thought i was in labour about 5 times before i actually went into labour at 43 weeks and had in 13hrs
