does anyone know if a bubby is breech at 37 weeks and expected to be a big baby that it will turn by itself..??? My ob doesnt sound so confident so i just thought i would ask if anyone has been through it and done vaginal birth ... as i dont want a c/s.
Tammy - this is my first bub so i cant tell you much from personal experience.
I know at my hospital they dont like to deliver breech naturally (although it is possible) for a couple of reasons.
Firstly bub can get stuck depending on the position he is coming out - arms above head etc and can cause joint damage/ shoulder dystocia etc.
Secondly you have a bigger risk of prolapsed cord because the head isnt covering the cervix and there is more room for the cord to slip down between the legs etc which can be very dangerous to bub is it becomes occlude cutting off oxygen and blood circulation to the baby during birth (especially if bub isnt coming out easy and spend too much time without oxygen).
For this reason they will often prebook a c-section (usually early than your edd) so that you dont go into labour.
But the decision is yours , you need to weigh up the safety of bub and yourself over the reasons you dont want a c-section.
Tammy - is this your first baby?? Often second babies turn later than firsts so there is still time (although this is coming from a person who is still with a baby in breech position ) How big are they estimating the baby to be (and remember that it is an estimate only)?? Where are you delivering and have you discussed the option of vaginal breech birth with your carers??
I am currently waiting to see an OB today about a vaginal breech delivery and whether it is an option for my situation. There are risks for both options and you need to be fully informed to make the decision that is best suited to your circumstances.
this is my 3rd baby.. my first was 8pd 6 and my 2nd 7pd 3.... the ob hasnt said exactly what she thinks the baby wil be all she is telling me is that it is a big baby.... every appointment til my 35 week check up bubby was head down... an now we have a nice big head under my ribs... i have an ultrasound this thursday, so i will know more then.
