    2 hour Gestational Diabetes Test

Well I failed the first GD glucose test and now have to do the 2 hour test.

I am pretty sure it's not because I ate that WHOLE mars bar !!

for anyone who did not read my post about eating a mars bar
    Need to Vent-

Anyways.... I am not too stressed at this point as I have bigger worries than GD at the moment and I figure it's not GD till the fat lady sings..or I get the results back.

One question I did have is for the 2 hour fasting on the day of the test.. can I drink water? I didnt think to ask...

other than the GD test results my OB appointment went well, bubs is doing fine and is "growing nicely" according to my OBs technical terminology. No scan was done just some prodding and a doppler.

anyways any advice about GD test etc would be nice..

    Hello DD

I'm doing my 2 hour GTT on Monday and my lady said that I can have water but nothing else from midnight. So I can have water in the morning. Water also helps to keep your veins hydrated so that they are easier to work with when they are trying to access them.

    Good luck with your results.

Delecate Dove, I am having my second one on Monday. I didn't fail the first one, but the results were a little higher than normal (7.7 and the cut off is 7.8).

    This is the run down I got from the pathologist;

-Eat a carb loaded diet for several days - heaps of cereal, bread, pasta etc
-Fast from 9pm the night before the test - water is allowed after this time
-Take a first morning urine sample to take with you - this needs to be tested before the test commences
-First lot of bloods will be taken
    -Drink the glucose drink
-After 1hr another set of bloods are taken
-At the end of the 2nd hr another set of bloods are taken.

I had to do the 2 hr test with each pg. My ob routinely does those first instead of the other one. I felt so sick the first time with not eating that I asked not to do it the second time, but my results were high the first time so she wanted me to do it. I wasn't as bad the second time. I think my results were high the first time as I hadn't eaten the carb diet (they only told me about it when I turned up for the test).

Also, I didn't need a urine sample either time - my ob checks urine each visit and I think she specified on the order form no urine necessary. So maybe check first whether you'll need that.

I took something to eat with me so I could eat as soon as it was all over. I think asking pg women to fast is a form of torture.

Well I did my test yesterday...

not sure it's a good sign though as I got so sleepy after the drink that the nurse forced me to go lay down, I thought I had been laying there for 5 mins got up for a toilet trip and she said an hour had passed and it weas time for another blood test.

I am meant to ring up tomorrow to see how the results went, I am assuming my Dr will ring me if something is wrong though...

I guess I can't be good at everything..

DD - just because it affected you like that doesn't mean you have GD. I got really sick from it and had to sleep it off too last time and I didn't have GD.

My test is on Monday and dreeeeaaading it!!

    Hope you passed!!

ETA: When I called to make the appt and get instructions they didn't mention the carb diet so I asked about it. They said they don't do it anymore because research has shown it has no affect on results? Thought this was interesting - glad I don't have to do it though!

I had my test and didn't have to have 3 sets of bloods as the test on the urine came back clear for sugar. So fingers crossed that is a good sign for me.

Delicate Dove, did you hve a bad night sleep the night before? Maybe that made you extra sleepy.

Everynight is a bad nights sleep at the moment... LOL

My urine also came back clear, but she continued to do the bloods.

    Hi Dove,

Hope it comes back ok for you. Funnily enough the sleepyness you described i got too. NOT a GD test, but waiting for daycare monitoring, there were no beds when i arrived. I had to sit for a few hours(!) and they gave me orange juice which was WAY too sweet IMO. Just then a bed freed up and they called me and boy was i glad because i had BP taken (high) and then nodded off while they did the fetal monitoring! My BP was lower afterwards so that was good. I think blood sugar and that sort of thing just affects us more in PG.

Anyway, hope you're well and you and hubby aren't fighting over the snacks anymore

    Hoobley,

he is still watching everything I eat... so I am hoping the GD is negative and then I can eat a "whole" mars bar without guilt again..LOL

LMAO still at the "whole" mars bar! Why does he think they come in a pack like that? So you can get your ruler out and cut 1cm chunks off? If they weren't for eating like that they'd be like butter - have the 50g lines on the pack so yu could see how much you're taking for baking.
