Who has tried accupuncture leading up to labour?

I've just booked in for 'Pre-birth' accupuncture sessions "to help prepare my body for a more efficient labour" I must say, I'm quite excited and intrigued. I've heard of accupucture as a form of induction but didn't realise it could help prep your body for labour too.

Anyone else tried it in the lead up to birth?

I did one session before Amelia was born. The guy stayed away from the induction points but there were others that can apparently prepare your body for birth. I have no idea if it did anything but she wriggled around a lot during and after the session. I didn't do it with DD2 and she was a much harder birth.

Yep I did! I think it helped get my babies into the right position.

I have not had it for pregnancy/labour stuff yet but I did enquire about it and was told it should be started a few weeks before you are due at least so you have a few sessions under your belt no idea just HOW necessary that would be for the patient but could have been a bit of a money spinner line too.

Its not going to hurt doing it so let meknow how you get on

Sure do Nae! It can't come this week as it's a tad early (35 weeks) and my parents are in Bali but I'm thinking week 37 has an awfully nice ring to it.

Well I'm excited now! It sounds like the goods although 10 minutes is a bit fast (wowzers Tegam!), we need at least 20 to get to the hossi

They start the sessions at 36 weeks and do four treatments, one a week, but they didn't have a free appointment next week so I'm booked for my first session the following Monday at 36+5. Can't wait!

Wonder what else I can do. I'm already sculling RLT

I'm planning on getting to my acupuncturist next week if this baby hasn't arrived by then! But that will be for induction rather than getting my body ready. I did have some acupuncture earlier in the pg, but my back was actually worse afterwards!

I'm skulling RLT, not doing EPO (because it apparently softens scar tissue, including the c/s scar), got on the swing at the park today for a while, lots of good seating positions, and *ahem* apparently orgasms are good for it too!

I saw an acupunturist with DD as I had a fall & needed pain relief. As I was past my due date, she did some induction points as well to help bring on labour. She told me that most women go into labour within 3 days of having this treatment. 5 days later, I had DD. It was a very quick labour too - just over 2 hours in total from waters breaking to giving birth. I'm not sure if acupuncture made a difference. My ob said I was already 2cm dialated on my due date, acupuncture was first done at 3 days over, & then twice more after that & DD was born at 7 days over.

ETA, I had more braxton hicks in the few hours post treatment each time

I had a session at 40 weeks, I had a few days of pre-labour, but alas had a c-section at 40+5. Next time I'm going to book in a few sessions! (I bawled my eyes out during my session, it was such a release!)

With DD - I had an induction session at 40+7 and went into labor next day (emergency c-section), with DS I had quite a few sessions in the lead up (with Chris Tang from the Prof Support Panel as volunteered to be photographed having a treatment so photos could be used on his website - I think PZ was meant to do it but she had Isla instead) - anyway the sessions were very relaxing and I got lots of tightenings afterwards, the last one I had was two days before due date and he said lets book one in for next week but you won't need it - and he was right went into labor on due date - ended as e c-section but my labor progressed further and he didn't get himself stuck till further on than DD. I am a definite fan of acupuncture.

Raspberry leaf tea hon Get into it. I used it last time and swear it helped. Get the leaves over the teabags though, it's much stronger that way.

These stories are fantastic. It's amazing the power of natural medicine.

I might give the EPOs a go this time, why the hell not

A little TMI but the big O certainly brings on the BHs (did last time too) so I'm working on those

You could always book in with Gaby Targett and have an amazing pregnancy massage and then she can do your acupressure points (I think she only does them once you're past your EDD though)

The massage alone is worth it!

Will keep that in mind! I did have an amazing spa treatment at Yummy Mummy last Friday though - 2 hours of massage and facial bliss. Ahhh I very keen to try accupuncture if this baby is overdue though.

I had acupuncture but my dr wouldn't do anything birth or labour related before 40 weeks, was great for my backache though. I had three sessions of induction acupuncture between 40 weeks & 40+10.

Also used RLT (drank tea & took the tablets) used EPO, walked, had sex, ate curries, pineapple, kicked the football with the boys.....

I love acupuncture. I actually started while TTC, and that cycle fell pregnant. I kept up the treatments throughout the pregnancy, and started the "prep" sessions at 37 weeks because I had GD and really wanted to avoid an induction. I had a really good labour at 37+3.

My SIL had acupuncture at 7pm at about 40+4 and went into labour at 10:30pm

I think moxa helps turn bub, I know my acupuncturist told me not to worry if that happened and I'm pretty sure he said he would start trying to turn bub at about the 36 week mark too. good luck

Thanks Cherished. I really hope it helps cause I'm so not doing time on all fours again like last time
