I was told by a few people that Public schools can't actually stop children from attending their school regardless of what they're wearing. I was concerned too because DD won't have all of the 'proper' school uniform. I am buying most of her things from target/big w which are still school colours, but without the emblem on them. She will still be wearing the same as the other children just without the school 'logo' (and many others wear the same). It was going to be ridiculously expensive otherwise.
Trill I am DETERMINED to get down there with 2 weeks to spare before school starts. Have told DH that the 15th is our cut off date, so he has a week from when he picks up his trailer! :rofl: Our settlement is the 1st Feb but I want to enjoy my summer at the beach before they start school/kinder!
Thanks 3lm, thats what I was hoping. DH was gobsmacked when he saw the invoice from the clothing shop. I plan on buying her winter uniform from target/big w, with only a couple of pieces from the uniform shop.:
Coming from teacher background, granted I havent taught in a few years. And being from the country where there were uniform shops and the uniform expectations were only strict in the rivate and independent schools. I wasnt prepared for the strict uniform guidelines at this school, or the inability to shop around for the best uniform. I was even a little disappointed that I couldnt make DD's dress lol. (But dd is insisting that I make her her library bag which is a nice lift ;) )
I think all schools do their best to encourage students to wear the set uniform, but they aren't stupid, they know they can't force you to have it. But I will say that I think it looks fantastic to see a school out on an excursion and they are all wearing a uniform kwim? Another option would be to see if the school has a second hand clothing pool. I have taken the clothes that my girls have outgrown and it's always appreciated by the school. With DS1's high school (boarding school) we got a few items from the second hand pool just to save a few $$. They need a practical uniform (it's an agricultural school) and we couldnt' see the sense in buying new trousers for him to wear while mucking out the pigs. So we got second hand hard yakka trousers for only $5 a pair.

Just found this thread, my eldest will begin school this year also. So excited for him and i think he is too. It's been a busy few years being a SAHM of 3 so i'm excited for this next stage and maybe days to be slightly less demanding?? Or is that a hopeless fantasay? Will try and catch up properly at a reasonable hour :)
I got a slazenger skort today and socks. Still need shoes and lunchbox stuff and also need to label.

Hopeless fantasy :lol: people said I would be busy with 3 close in age, and then 4 kids. I'm busier now than what I was with 3 (nearly) under 3. But it's a good busy kwim?:

Well I went to Target today and couldn't find any Slazenger skorts just some other brand that looked huge and ridiculous on her! :rofl: Ended up getting some boys (shh nobody will know) Spaulding sports shorts, some drill shorts and some basketball type ones - will see what the deal is once we get there too, they were all comfortable for her which is important with my fussy girl!!! Also got a dress and some socks so we are all set now except for a hat!! Saw them at Kmart but the brim looked weird!! So excited for her now - now just have to keep packing - ugh 41 today so I only got about 3boxes done!
Hey ladies my dd1 starts this year. Ive been running around trying to get her school shoes. She is a toddler size 7!!!! All school shoes inc clark starts at size 10!
Only target brand is the closet fit with a 1 cm gap still with size 9.
Anyone have this issue? Dd is a very small girl so she is drowning in her uniform lol
Some schools sell their school emblem so all you have to do is sew it on to the target etc.. clothes. I know our school does anyway :)
We did all our school shopping yesterday. Was hoping to find everything in bigw but that was a big disappointment. They didn't have shorts in the right blue, only skorts which are ugly and not in our uniform. Ended up getting shorts at lowes for more $$. Shoes - she insisted on buckles which weren't in her size so ended up at mathers and paying $$ lol. And do you think I could find grey socks for DS?? Argh. So he now has enormous socks to wear cos I could only find bigger ones lol. Shirts I was temped by the $2 st marks ones at bigw but dd is such a sweaty little thing I thought I should stick to the stubbies cos they have vents in them and sun protection.
I also got her some netball knickers (as opposed to monkey bar knickers - tho they're the same really) cos I didn't want glaring colorful things. So nice plain dark blue cotton shorties for under her dress.
Lunch boxes are bought too. So I think we're ready to roll!
I just need to buy DS1 shoes - then we're all set for his first day of school :) Our school is having a pre-school prep picnic a week or two before school starts so the kids and parents can meet each other. Should be good for DS1 providing some of the kids in his class turn up, as currently he won't know anyone in prep.
TBH, what's worries me a tad about school is less about DS1 attending and coping (he will) ... it's more about how I go with drop off/pick up on a rainy day with a five-month-old bub and a "challenging" three year old in tow. The stoooopid things that I think about, honestly!!!!
AndE not a stupid thought at all. It is challenging and frustrating in the rain that always hits at pickup time.
My DS is the last of five kiddies to be starting Kindy-school,after the Summer holidays.
I`am feeling sad,but happy for him,he will be with his six year old brother & eleven year old sister so he will have a smooth transition into the school.
I`am going to miss him being with me & doing things together,even though he was in day care twice a week.
He is excited,but asked does he have to go the five days a week,lol.....it takes the little ones about 2 months to get used to getting up & going off to school,no more sleep ins.
Winter will be fun.

My baby boy is starting this year and while I know he is ready i'm certainly not ready for him to go. I know there will be tears (from me) tantrums (from DD not wanting to leave him there without her) fustration (from DH at the state of his girls) and excitement from DS.

What dates are your kids actually starting school? My DD isn't starting until 11th Feb. That seems awfully late to me? We're in remote NSW I don't know if that makes any difference?
Mine all go back (high school too) on the 29th of Jan. That is a long wait for you 3littlemonkeys
Dd goes the 31st for a half day them has a full day on the 1st, she has Wednesdays off for most of 1st term.
My eleven & six year old go back to Primary school on the 30th January, but my youngest starting Kindy at school doesn`t start until 4th February & he`s not happy he can`t go with his brother & sister....
Private & Public School`s all have different start dates,I don`t know why!
3littlemonkeys, you get the extra week because of where you live and the extreme heat etc. Where I live is right on the border of that - our kids school doesn't get it, but the school in the next town 42kms west of us do get it. But that is a late starting date - the Western Division that you are in is supposed to start on Feb 6 according to the info on the DET website. Maybe because she is starting school they want to give the kindy's an extra week?
30th Jan for us with 9:30 start and 3:00 finish for 2 weeks and Wednesdays off for 4 weeks.
Jan 30 for us. Our school is doing things a big differently though - there are 3 prep classes and half the kids in each class start on the Wednesday and have Thursday off, while the other half have Wednesday off and start school on the Thursday (they all attend on the Friday). I guess this gives the teachers a day to try and sort out the names etc of 13-14 kids rather than the full 28. Sounds ok to me, anyway.
DD1 starts on the 4th of Feb, 2 half days, Wednesday off then 2 full days.

I'm not sure when DS starts school but I really hope it's not Feb 4 as that's his birthday. I'm pretty sure he starts on either the 29th or 30th. I'll be checking this week when I pick up uniforms.
DD starts on the 30th and for the month of Feb they don't attend Wednesdays. In the past the preps would start at 9.30 and finish at 2.30, do any other schools do something similar to this?

DD starts 4th Feb at 8.45am finishing 3.15pm with every Wednesday off until Vic Labour Day holiday in March. TBH I hoped they were just going to do the 5 full days. She is used to having two full days for creche when I worked (and she is still going until she starts school) and she had kinder three half days last year so she will be ok with the extra time at school. I know it will be different given they are 'learning' - she'll probably be more tired etc.... But I am confident she will transition easily.
I know for DD school the other year levels start on the 30th January.
I can't find decent runners for DD in a plain colour. I've tried Rebel, Mathers, Harris Scarfe and Myer. I am looking for brand name preferably and she is a size 10. If anyone has any ideas where else I can look, please share :-)
DS is starting full time Feb 4. How exciting! Not sure how DD will cope with 5 full days without her buddy. I think she may need to find some friends. Just hoping she'll comply with being wrapped on my back for school runs as going at toddler-pace doesn't really appeal.
DD starts on the 4th of feb, the kindy's start later and finish earlier than everyone else for feb then its normal times for them.
On the 1st of feb DD has a best start test though, and that will be interesting.
We're starting at 9:30 on the 4th but all other mornings after that will be 9 through until 3:30 and we have wednesdays off until labour day also. The beginners will also play at different times to the rest of the school until it is felt that they are comfortable enough to mingle in.

DD has her 20min best start interview on Thurs 31st (they're doing them all over the 2 days, Wed & Thurs) and then they all start on Monday 4th. I'm not sure if they're staggering the start times or if they all just arrive for 9.00am. They staggered it for DS class, so they arrived in groups of 5 or 6 every 1/2 hr or so.
The other years all go back on Wed 30th tho. So DS will be back and settled by the time DD starts kindy properly.
Yeah, our school is doing the same thing - older kids will go back on the 30th and DS2 will have his best start on the 31st and then start school on the 1st. Works out well because we have to take DS1 to his school on the 30th too, so we can get the girls on the bus and then take him to his school. I was really worried that both DS's would have to start school on the same day.
Both girls start on the 4th of Feb but DD2 has every wednesday off for the month of Feb.
DD starts on the 30th (staggered start, yet to find out the time). Then 2 days at home with a Best Start assessment at some stage, then back properly on the 4th. Seems silly to me to start, then be home again, before going back the next week. Trillian, your school sounds much better.
