Dd1 starts on 31st for half day 1st for half day and then on the 4th onwards full day.
Im so worried for her coz she's soooo little compared to everyone else
DS starts Prep this year! We've bought his bag, and one pair of shorts (that are a bit small, but fit ok). I didn't think about it, but I left getting his school uniform until the day before school starts! DH is coming to his first day of school, and I'm going to need him coz I'll be a mess (like Kindy breakup!).
Apparently, our school books will be delivered to our door! I'm still waiting though!
DD1 goes back on 4 February but I'm not actually sure when DD2 goes back - the school is fantastic for teaching but the admin leaves a lot to be desired and I got the letter with details for year 1, not pre-primary!!
What is everyone doing about shoes? Kindy and pre-primary they wear black sneakers, so I just got some velcro ones but DD1 needs proper black leather shoes this year. They're supposed to be lace up, but there's a fair bit of leniency given for the littlies and they're allowed to have buckles, but DD1 is determined to have laces. Can anyone's 5 year old do them up by themselves??
We've gone with buckles. She'll wear sneakers on sports day. DD hasn't learnt to tie laces yet, but DS was able to at the start of school (tho not really tight enough). He insisted on laces, and he managed I think (with double bows & knots etc). But he's opted for velcro since then LOL. Altho actually he just got lace ups again for this year. See how we go this time LOL.
If you sit them down to learn it, they can get it fairly quickly. It's the motivation to practice it that I found hard. There are books with shoes/laces on them that might help them practice.
On our info night tho, they encouraged velcro for the kindys cos the teachers get sick of tying laces LOL.
My DS can't do laces so we're going with Velcro. Our school info said they needed closed in shoes so not sure if that's sneakers or some other type. They've left it pretty open!
I don't think DD can do laces - we've haven't had the need yet. My niece also starts school this year and her (private) school insists on laces. Apparently she got it pretty much straight away (she will be 5 in March).
My DD can't do them either, we have been trying but no luck still.
Good to know most kids struggle still at this age - hopefully I'll be able to use that sort of argument with Miss I to get some buckles on her feet.
I bought her one of those laces books and she's been "practising" for a week now but she's such an independent little miss that she thinks if you show her once then that's enough. I guess sometime very soon she will accept that she needs a little more help. We still have four full weeks before school starts so lots of practise time
DD1 wanted to learn to tie her own laces a while back, I had a go at teaching her but she wasnt ready to pick it up. So we got her a pair of buckle shoes. But I suppose I shall go back to teaching her, cause her joggers will have laces to be done up lol
We got DD buckle shoes but yes her runners will have laces so i guess she will need to learn before she starts school.
We have been practising writing her name with upper & lower case & helping her to recognize words from books.
Need to get a few things off lay-by mostly her dance stuff & socks, bike shorts & her sports uniform.
What level is your DD about to start Cheshire? I always get so confused with who does what when given that all the states seem to be so totally different.
*meh* about laces. They will get them soon enough. Mine have all varied so much in when they learnt to do it. I know it's a godsend for the teachers if they do know how, but it's nothing a double knot can't fix ;)
Re: laces. At our orientation morning last November, the prep teacher who addressed all the parents actually asked that we don't buy the preppies shoes with laces, particularly the boys, if we could avoid it. Something about them returning from the toilet with wet shoelaces and asking her to tie them ... ;)
Ds has lace ups and I'm a bit worried about it. CAn someone tell me where I can get one of these lace up books to practice? Luckily we don't have to worry about books, pencils etc. the school does it all for us and it is all organized for them for when they arrive on the first day! :)
G, he could just practice on a lace up shoe at home if any of you have them. These kids loved practising on DH's work boots :lol:
Or you can just get a bit of cardboard and punch some holes in, thread a spare shoelace through it.
We've bought velcro ones. But we're stretching the "school shoes" concept a little with mary-janes. But they've got good non-slip chunky soles so I don't think it will be a problem. They tend to frown more on the ones with the thinner, less grippy soles.
Our school list says school shoes or runners and the Principal at the info night said don't buy shoes - Runners are perfect as they are so active! DD has a pair of slip on ones but I'm not sure they will be ok so am going to get get a Velcro pair, just need those plus a hat!!!!
We pick up the last of Miss M school things on Weds.
She is so excited by it all :D
We have everything!! Now all we need to do it wait! She tried it all on the other day and did a little catwalk runway for us, it was so cute. She is so excited! She didn't want to take her dress off!
As for the shoes debate, although I would have rathered she chose lace up or buckle shoes (only because she can do laces and buckles herself), she chose some velcro ones. Why not just get your kids to practice on some lace up shoes of yours or their siblings. Or as someone suggested, tie laces in some sturdy cardboard and they can practice that way. They will learn how to do it, but it might be a long few weeks until they do, having to do their laces up all the time, or having them trip over them!
re: the shoe laces, I've sent DS1 to kindy for the past year with laces in double knots, never had an issue :)
I have almost everything for school, just have to get a couple of jumpers and DS1 has to pick his backpack.
Is there anyone else who doesn't have to supply any books/stationery or anything along those lines? We've been told they don't need anything in that regard as it's all covered in the fees, does that sound right or are all schools different? We are going public.
Jaycee our books/stationery are all covered by the fees. We were given some things to take home and label (pencil case, headphones, writing book etc).
We went with buckle shoes. They are so cute on her! We have everything, just need to label it all and she is ready. Only 2.5 weeks until my baby starts school eeekkkk!
Yep, our shopping list has only being for clothing and bags and shoes, etc. They provide everything at school for DD1, she doesnt even need a pencilcase. But I think every school is different as to what they cater for etc.
That being said I will be getting a few books for DD to have at home, just cause you can never have too many books.

We went with velcro Clarks (mary jane type) that I sourced at DFO for $71, so I was happy with that. The school didn't specify if they had to be laces etc.... so long as they were black school shoes. Also got velcro runners as DD can't do shoelaces up yet.
We had to pay for some stationery (books, pencils etc...) that all the kids use in the classroom. All schools seem to be different. My gf had to fork out nearly $200 for stationery whereas mine was around $50 but that included her library/reader bag.
I have washed DD school uniform today, just waiting for it to dry so I can iron it and label it. Everything else is labelled, including sports nickers and shoes.
I am getting really excited now!

I suspect all schools are different, but the above applies to us (we're going private). We paid a book/stationary levy last year and all DS1's books etc will be waiting for him on the first day of school :):
The girls go to a private school and we don't need to provide anything at all for kindy and pre-primary (no idea what that actually equates to over east - its all way too confusing to me) but we do pay a levy that covers the cost of the school buying things in bulk - everything is just shared between the kids. DD1 starts grade 1 this year and she has an equipment list that we need to provide.
We bit the bullet and went and got both girls new shoes for school the other day. Ended up going with buckle like Mary Jane's for DD1's proper shoes, and velcro sneakers for both of them. Of course, when we got home DD1 dragged out her laces book and started practising with it, and she can tie laces beautifully already but she loves her mary janes and has decided that she'll "have lace shoes in grade 2 Mummy"!!!
Ginger - I got Miss I's lace up book through the school book orders they do - Scholastic or something like that? The benefit they have over just using a shoe to practice on is that the lace is coloured differently in two halves, so it makes it easier for them in the beginning to follow the instructions eg the yellow lace wraps around the back of the purple lace sort of thing.

Ginger, we got ours on the day the FTB normally goes into our account. My sister did too. BUT...
I rang about a fortnight before to ask about the dates and was told that even though I had gone through the palaver of logging in late last year to make sure both my kids were registered as school kids, it turns out there was a bit of info missing that meant that DD1 wasn't registered as a school child (even though they have had that info since she left childcare 10 years ago :wall:). So if your normal pay day has come and gone like normal, it's worth ringing up to check.

Got mine today & brought the rest of DD1's stuff.
She is currently wearing her school shoes in, she looks so grown up in her uniform.
Will go lay-by her winter uniform in feb/march & some black boots as well.
Ginger, ring them. I had filled out all the fields on the regristration form online & yet apparently some crucial thing was missing (which was info they already had btw) so yeah, I don't have a huge amount of faith in the online form on this one.
I'm starting to get a little sad... where did my baby go??
I keep thinking to myself, this is the last week that I will ever have 2 pre-school children, that's kind of freaking me out a little.
I think I'm over-analysing things a little, but I can't help it. I can not believe that my little baby I held in my arms is going to be a big school boy.
I'm getting all choked up just typing this, I'm going to be a mess come Tuesday.
Please tell me I'm not the only one!
