Hi ladies,
How are your poppets getting on with prep? It finally hit DS1 tonight that school is a five-day-a-week affair. He was a bit sad to realise that he won't get to go to playgroup or my mums' group any more and said very quietly "I don't want to go to school tomorrow". Awwww. I'll have to watch him a bit to make sure he doesn't feel like he's missing out, and make a fuss of him (as in a good fuss) about being at school and all the fun things they do. Fortunately though, he's settling in reasonably well and has made a few friends.
On the downside, I'm finding the drop off and pick up to be a grind already. I think it's only because 5mo DS3's routine has totally gone out the window and his sleeping is now all over the place - particularly if we go to the shops and/or have other jobs to do. Parking at the school is a real issue as it's all on-street and there are two schools in very close vicinity. So most parents try to get there a good 15-20 mins before school finishes to park within a bull's roar of the school. I find with DS3, and particularly when DS2 is with me (and not at daycare), I need to park reasonably close so we don't have too far to walk. Thankfully DS3 sleeps well in the car, so I often get there early and take a coffee and a book so my poor little man can have at least a half hour kip. I'm sure it will all get easier - we just need to find our groove/routine again.
Andi we are having similar issues with parking, if I have dd2 and ds it can take 10 minutes to get to the school by the time we park and walk. Then I have them scream when we have to leave as they love playing there. We have to be there 30 minutes beforehand to be close which isn't very practical.
Hope your ds settles in soon, surprisingly dd1 is thriving and wants to go she was really anxious before school started. We do have Wednesdays off for first term though.
We get there around 30mins earlier otherwise i got no chance at close parking.
Looking forward to the day where i can drive through the drop off line.
Trying to leave the school is nightmare. It took me 20 mins to get home yesterday & it's only a 2-3min drive.
It is faster for us to walk than drive so we're sticking with that.
DD is still really enjoying herself. My mum is down this week and asked yesterday if they needed any help in the classroom - she ended up spending 3/4 of the day there! She is a retired PS teacher so probably would have been really helpful. Found out from her that there is a teachers aide for all of first term between the 2 kindy classes, that DD seems to shadow the teacher and that we are a great bunch of parents because we can follow instructions and send in fruit for fruit time (apparently a big issue last year).
Starting after school care next week.
All is going well so far. Last week after having the Wednesday off he did say "I don't want to go to school" when he realised that he misses out on fun stuff with Mum! I promised him a treat from the Milk Bar straight after school for that day and he perked up immediately and had a great day lol! He had his assessment session this morning and his teacher said he is going well. He did get in trouble yesterday with two other boys for screaming and making loud noises in the toilets :lol:. She said ALL boys have to do that at some stage, she doesn't know why hahaha! Apart from that, he's been great.
We walk to school rather than drive. Parking is a pain in the backside and it's just as quick to walk anyway! It's only 550m from our house so it's good exercise for us all :).
DD is absolutely loving school, tomorrow the preps will be ruling the school, all the teachers are on strike apart from the prep teacher.

DD is loving it too. I thought she was going to be tired but she's not anymore tired than usual. She talks non-stop after school, I get an in depth description of her day (down to her toileting and when and what she did lol!).
She had her literacy test this morning and did really well and she's unhappy that she has to stay home tomorrow because the teachers are on strike. I'm happy not to have to rush around in the morning!
Parking is a pain in the butt at our school too. Due to DS's kinder schedule, I can't get there early enough on a couple of days to get a park anywhere near the school. Not so bad now but I'm dreading it in winter when it will be cold/raining and I'll have to walk a bazillion miles lol.
My DD is loving school too, though it's all caught up with her today (her 3rd day). She is whining and grumping and being so rude and whingy! I have given them all a snack and then she can have a nice cool bath by herself to regroup a little bit. I am trying to be patient, but she's pushing my buttons!
We don't have an issue with drop off or pick ups, we live about 5 mins walk from the school so we just walk down there and all is well.
Good news
Dd found a friend and has not cried at school since friday. Mum is very relieved although she doesnt love school yet but likes school *baby steps*
Parking is a pain too and the traffic jam everywhere arrghhhhh.
I get there an hr early and wait in the car lol. The waiting time has started to decrease though and today managed to only have to wait 40 mins.
Our DD1 started prep this year too :)
So far she appears to be really loving it...not so sure about the learning aspect but DEFINITELY the socialising part :rofl:
Her levels of tiredness however are astronomical. i am actually thankful for the day off tomorrow as that gives us a long weekend (our preps have fridays off) and i think DD needs it.
DS is loving school. Wish he was more tired but he's just as energetic as ever. I take him to the park next to the school sometimes but not even that helps :wall: Wish I had his energy..
His teacher said he's very distracted in class. He does the activity for a few minutes then wanders off to something else. I asked him about it and he says that they take too long..
DD is enjoying school and has made a friend.
Same here with the school traffic and parking. We arent within walking distance so we leave about 30 mins prior to first bell. That way I can get a park and get DD 2 out and settle in DD 1. Pickups are worst. The queue to get out of the carpark is a nightmare!
M2SCs - so glad to hear your DD is doing better!
Thankfully we live a 7 minute walk from school so as long as it isn't raining we are walking, but it has rained all this week which has mentfigting for parking.
Howi s everyone going with snacks and lunches? It is driving me batty already. I do all package free (not that we have to but I find it only leaves me healthier options if I do). I'm just running pt of ideas, I thinki really need to do some cooking/baking to freeze. Does anyone have any ideas and knowledge of how much fat, carbs, protein kids should have each day?
Kts there is a lunchbox thread on here I have found some awesome ideas on there. We have to be rubbish free so it has made me think about what kind of foods we use but dd is loving choosing things the strangest is a butter sandwich! We are supposed to pack 6 things which can be challenging.

Kts the lunchbox thread has some awesome recipes. I also find the taste website really good for healthy recipes.
I just wish we could give them nuts! My DD loves nuts and nut butters, I would so much rather give her crackers/rice thins with peanut/almond butter than vegemite. But she has a kid with severe allergies and anaphylaxis in her class. They even have to sanitise their hands and wipe faces before they go into the room.
kts64s, remember that kids are often happy with the same thing more than once, giving them the same or very similar things every day isn't a bad thing!
I had to giggle at your post, you described my DS1 when he started school! I was expecting to bring home a tired boy, but he came home each day and rode his bike, jumped on the trampoline, climbed trees etc. like nothing had even happened lol! He also moved on from activity to activity in class very quickly. They sound very similar :):
DS2 is behaving the way I thought DS1 should have lol! He gets tired and needs his Wednesday off to regroup. DS1 could have gone to school 5 days a week and not batted an eye :lol:.

He's been diagnosed with ADHD and sensory issues, but he's a great kid :D. Really easy going and well behaved at home. We have removed nasty additives and gluten from his diet and it makes a huge difference. He is much calmer without them. Please don't stress, just because your DS sounds like mine did at the same age, it doesn't mean he has ADHD! He sounds like a normal boy with lots of energy :)
I can't believe how long you girls have to wait at the school just to get a park, that's ridiculous! Thank goodness for DS being at a semi-rural school, we park less than 50m from the school gates every day without fail. I feel for you all, I really do!
My DS2 is absolute loving school. I asked him the other day if he likes school and he said "oh, I really, really love it."
He has made loads of friends in his class, both boys & girls and he has made 3 friends in yr 2. He is getting registered to okay for the schools soccer team, which will be great and hopefully give me an opportunity to meet some parents.
Parking at his school is chaotic too. DH takes DS2 to school in the mornings and I do the after school pick up. DS2 gets waked up to the kiss & go zone at his school by an older student and I just drive up and pick him up. It's so much easier than trying to find somewhere to park and then negotiating the 2 girls through minor traffic to pick him up. Hopefully DD2 gets into day care at the school soon so it will be slightly easier to pick DS2 up.
DD is loving school. Was sad last week when she had to have a day off for a drs appt. Then I had to break the very sad news that kinddy kids dont go to the swimming carnival.. She came home so excited that there was going to be a swimming carnival, "where theres races and games and lots of fun". Well she was that excited at the assembly that she didnt hear the next part that said that only the older kids were going. She cried when I told her that she couldnt go. But she got over it once I reminded her that she could keep practising at swimming lessons :lol:
Drop off and pick up is becoming harder, the traffic is nuts, and it doesnt help that the school is in the cbd of town, so people are going to work, buses, and parents dropping off. Im hoping to start parking further away and walking up to school, just have to leave home sooner :lol:
So happy all the kiddies are doing well at school and finding their way. We must all be some pretty awesome parents to be raising such wonderful kiddies. :)
Despite being told she has issues following instructions (see other thread lol) DD loves school which is a relief. I love seeing how quick she is learning - these kids really are like sponges. Sight words, readers and show and share - she soaks it all up!

My DD is loving school too. I asked the teacher on Friday how she was doing and she gushed at me, lol. ''Ohhh, she is so great! I would love a classroom full of Lily's!'' It was really lovely to hear, even though I know she would be great!
DD has just woken from a 2 1/2 hour nap this arvo! She will be up all night, but clearly needed some extra rest. I will be trying to put her to be at a reasonable hour though, so it is extra rest! Not just a 2 1/2 hour nap, and going to bed 2 1/2 hours later!
we are experiencing mega meltdowns in our house of a late afternoon :o
we were warned but far out! i am not used to a really emotional melt-downy kid!
Dd1 gets so tired after school. Keeps asking me when i going to sleep.
We cosleep and she still sleeps with me so no my kitchen rules for me because we are in bed by 7!
DD did pretty well for her first week. Thursday was our worst melt down day. I have taken to giving her a bath/shower on her own so she can regroup and have me time. Dinner is getting earlier too, one day it was at 4.30 for them, with a substantial snack at about 6-ish, then bed time at 7.
She's still waking at 5am. I did try over the weekend to have her up later, until 8.30pm on Saturday night, but she still woke at 5/5.30am, so we will stick with 7/7.30pm bed time for her.
She had a 3 hour nap on Saturday arvo! She was tired on Saturday after dancing and we just bummed about on Sunday. She was a little hesitent Sun night when I said it was school again tomorrow, but went off to school happily this morning.
She brought home he first home work today, she has to learn 3 sight words. She already knows them and rolled her eyes at me when I sat down with her to learn them, lol.
We are getting mega meltdown most afternoons & she is being super clingy in the mornings.
Thankfully the teachers distract her so i can leave, every school pick up she always has such a great day. No sure why she is being so clingy in the mornings.
She is doing really well with her readers & the teachers are very happy with where she is at.
DD had her first fall yesterday, she told me she went to the special doctors room (sick bay) and she was so brave she didn't cry, until we got into the car lol. Tomorrow we have parent/teacher interview so I'll find out a bit more on how she's going.

DD has her first sick day today. fevers, cough, snotty nose. We've been given the official welcome to big school now :lol: This is already her second day off, last week she had a day off thanks to a drs appt in the city.

Cheshire, we are getting some nice meltdowns too. Im trying to let a fair bit slide until she gets into her routine properly. But dd still insists at getting up before the sun too :(
We have the official welcome tonight, the meet and greet with the teachers... In other words its the teachers talking at us as a group for an hour, then we go home. And Im going by myself cause of DD being sick. DH is going to stay home with the girls. :/

Dd1 also had her first fall and scrapped her knee. She was limping when she was lining up.
I made sure she wasnt getting bullied and she said it was an accident and that the girls who were running didnt mean it.
She also peed her pants :(
Since two weeks ago she has not cried at school so thats a huge relief
She has also started geting homework for every day

mum2sweetcs - My DD had a fall today too and said "I was pretty brave mummy" haha her grade 5 buddy was playing with her and looked after her - I think they play every day at recess and lunch, so sweet!! She's absolutely loving school which is good because I have been picking up a few emergency teaching days, DH is overseas and mum has been here - pretty tired in the arvos and I am on some days shamelessly using dvd's until bedtime. They are SO tired and it's too cold to head to the beach today so Ice Age it is :rofl:
I know they learn by rote but it's so cute to have her do her reader and "read' all her books! So clever!!! Glad for Wednesdays off, and the strike day was great too just to give them a bit of a break!
Dd is loving reading and has been setup with access to reading eggs too which is now a favourite. She had her first big after school meltdown this afternoon so glad to have tomorrow off. Ds was mid strip at the school today he loves to be nude and almost had his pants off before I rescued him!

DD is loving school too. DH and I are so thrilled with how well she has settled in. She loves her teacher, is making new friends and also loves her buddy. She's enjoying bringing home a book every night too and wants to read it the second she gets home. The only thing she doesn't like is school assembly (can't say I blame her lol!). I keep expecting her to be really tired after school but so far she is fine. One of the mum's at school said that in her experience they are really tired towards the end of the term. Might be a good thing that term one in Vic is a short one this year!
DS' first sick day at school today. He has fever and a cough. He gets sick so often, no idea how to deal with it now he's at school :( not sure about tomorrow, what are the rules for school?
So hard isn't it Jan - I hope they grow out of it but I've heard school can be worse than child care. As for the rules I would think if it's a fever/gastro contagious thing at least 48 hours, if it's a cough/cold type thing I would gauge how they are feeling. DD had a drippy nose and a bit of a sore throat last week but really wanted to go - we told the teacher to call if she got worse but she was fine. If she had a fever I would have kept her home because I know she would have been miserable. Hope he is feeling better soon hun xoxox

I have a new pet hate: torrential rain at school drop off time. Grrrrr! Wouldn't be so bad if I only had DS1 to look after (we still have to walk preps to and from their classroom), but it's a total PIA with DS3 (5 months) on board! I'm so glad I bought DS1 a good little raincoat a few weeks ago!
It always seems to rain here too at 3.00 p.m lol. Saw the cutest thing this morning, DD has made a friend and she was away yesterday, this morning she comes up to DD and says "sorry I wasn't here yesterday". DD is so happy that she can now go to school on Wednesday's too.
