My child often asks for BILBY MOON. the illustrations really engage her, she has pointed out the little ant on each page, from an early age. She can now recognise a moon whether it's a crescent, half or full etc, from seeing this book so much. One of her first words was "STAR", which i also attribute to this book.
it's quite a calming book for a bedtime read too.
we have abridged the text content, to make it shorter when she was smaller. Sometimes we just discuss the illustrations and don't even read the words. It's made me realise there is more than just one way, to read a book.
i am so thrilled now, that at 2.5, when she has nothing to do, she goes and finds a book and sits down to "read" it to herself. I always wanted her to love books, and so far, i can see this starting.

But he also likes most Grug books, and The very hungry catepillar, because he likes to count the fruit. :p

We too love books in this house, and we have so many it isn't funny!
I myself love reading anything by Mick Inkpen to the children, and I also love the Hippopotamus on the Roof series. My youngest DD loves reading the 'That's not my Puppy' book.
A Fisherman's Tale is a good one too - a lift the flap book.
I could go on and on!

Where is the Green Sheep is a big one in this house too.......oh I could type it all out now without even getting the book out LOL we read it over & over!!
My Sis is a Primary Teacher & Kindy Director, she always recomends Brown Bear, Brown Bear. Charlie has looooved that book so much its almost in pieces. Great for teaching animals & colours.
And as a baby he was given an ABC book by Priddy Books & he loved it. He really took to it around 12months & would just turn pages for ages. Bit of a touch & feel book....went along the lines of... A is for apple that I like to bite, B is for bear that I cuddle at night, C is for car that drives around town & D is for duck all covered in down.................yeah I've read it a few times LOL.
well can't talk for DS he's not really into books yet but my favs were any golden book, where the wild things are and the very hungry caterpillar

ds absolutely loves 'love you forever' by robert munsch and 'grandpa and thomas' by pamela allen.
There's a Hippopotamus on Our roof Eating Cake :)
And a giant hardcover nursery rhymes book

hmmm there are probably more, but they are definitely the cult faves.
DD loves Dear Zoo, she loves making the animal noises and opening the flaps. We all love the Hairy Maclary books, DD has us read them to her over and over again.
Pear in the Pear Tree, Duck Stuck, the 'There's a Hippotamus...' books, any Dora book she can get her hands on (which I HATE!), My Friend Bear, I love you Stinky Face, ummm.....she loves sooo many! I could go on and on!
Anything by Mem Fox is brilliant!! (thats me the teacher talking LOL) DS likes Thomas books and "That's not my....." series, he also likes Wallace and Grommit LOL

Yep, I agree, MemFox is great, DD loves Possum Magic. And Pamela Allen's books are pretty good for young kids too, lots of rhyme and repatition. I can tell you the Pear in the Pear Tree book word perfect.

Oh yes I forgot Pamela Allen! As Lilias said anything with repetition and rhyming is great, my girls both loved Time for bed and could recite it long before they could read!
I've got an eBay bid in for a Green Sheep book! Will start looking for the other faves! :D
