HELP!
Hey ladies,
I need your help :)
I am trying to get Oscar to take a dummy but he won't have a bar of it. He is a big comfort sucker and has already figured out how to get his thumb or fingers in his mouth to suck on them. I also find some of the time if he is unsettled, I pop him on the breast and he sucks but when he gets milk he gets even more upset. If i take him off and hold a dummy to his mouth he quietens down when he realises no milk is coming out. I figure he gets upset cause he wants to suck but not have milk.
Im a first time mummy, and would really appreciate some advice

Have you tried different shaped teats on the dummies? My DS wouldn't take the cherry round type ones, but he will take the nuk style ones or flat ones.
-
my secound youngest also didn't like the dummy until i decided to put a bit of honey on the tip of it he now has a dummy with no trouble and so does my youngest baby who is only 6 weeks old

I have tried pretty much every day for weeks with a Happy Baby Cherry and a Nuk as well as an Avent and if he takes in his mouth I have to hold it there and he won't suck on it, he chews it. Like his mouth and tongue moves around and around and you can see him clamping the teat between his gums. So by doing this it won't stay in. The other times if he takes it in he gags like it's choking him or something.
And in case anyone asks, yes they are the newborn size dummies.

I'd suggest trying a different type of dummy too - DD would only take one brand (NUK) but DS would take anything.
I'd stay away from the honey too - they're not supposed to have it until they are over the age of 1 due to that bacteria thingy.
-
we haven't had any success with dummies here - DS was quite happy to suck on mine or DPs finger in the early weeks though. it helped to settle him when he wanted to comfort suck. it means someone has to be there but it did seem to soothe him off to sleep.

DD won't take her dummy now unless she is really tired (she would take it anytime until about 5 weeks old) but sometimes, and I mean sometimes I can get her to take it to comfort suck if I express some milk onto it. She recognises the taste, knows to suck (I think cause she thinks it is the boob cause of the milk smell and taste) but is happy when she sucks and no milk comes out. As i said it is a sometimes thing... sometimes it works and other times she sucks the milk off and then spits the dummy out.
Maybe try expressing a bit of your milk onto it.
Hope that makes sense.

thanks ladies:)
muchly appreciated. im really struggling atm.
Oscar wont sleep for more than 90mins at a time, i have tried absolutly everything. even if he is absolutly worn out he wont sleep longer than 90mins! :(
he was a great sleeper untill about 3weeks old, and now it seems like its getting harder not easier.
-
is that during the night as well or more for day naps? i definitely noticed that our daytime naps started going downhill at around 4 weeks.
-
all his sleeps including during the nights. its not as though he screams he will do some whinging noises ill get up and check on him and his just sometimes "quitely" laying there sucking on his fingers, then when he is due for a feed his eyes are almost popping out of his head because his so tired. generally my DP will get up and go watch TV with him and fall back asleep together but as soon as he falls asleep no longer will he wake back up!
im so lost at what to do.
i have asked my MIL for some advice, dont get me wrong she is great its just she will try take control instead of helping us out.

I was in a similar sitiuation about 7 months ago, I didnt offer DD a dummy untill she was about 6 weeks old and by then she didnt want a bar of it. I tried all the different types, tried slipping it in when she was coming off the boob, just waking up, just going down etc nothing worked. She was happy with using me as a dummy or the pinkie finger. In the end I just kept her on me 24/7 and I ended up co-sleeping as it was easier *sigh* I either fed her to sleep and held her, or DP would rock her to sleep and hold her. Yep it was exausting for the first three months but fast forward to now, she is still a suckle junkie but no-where near as bad... So this may not be helpful but just so you know if your little one dosnt end up taking the dummy it does get easier! And it sounds like you are doing a great job. Congratulations on your Bub too! :)

i was once told that rather then pushing it in if you have it in there mouth and gentle pull on it they automatically suck it back in...

oh, brooke, the same thing here with DS2. I held it in and he pushes it out with his tongue, while doing something similar to dry reeching. I did it once, in the earlier days, and he spewed EVERYWHERE!!!!!! So, I don't push the issue anymore.
I have one son I can't get the dummy off and the other I can't give the dummy to. I'm looking at it in that I won't have to ween DS2 from the dummy later. The sleep issues hopefully won't last!!! Pleeeeease.
