cot -> bed..what age and why?

so im looking at beds for DD2 (21 months) for no particular reason (shes climbed out once and climbs in reguarly) but im kind of excited about doing her room soon, but scared and sad about not more cot soon (DD1 was in a bed around 2)
so was wondering what age your child went into a bed and more importantly ... why?

ds went in to a bed at about 2 as we wantedto have him used to the bed, and set up the room for DD.

As you know, she is the same age as your DD. She will be staying in her cot for as long as she fits. It turns in to a toddler bed, so maybe some time after she turns 2 we will change it to a bed, but really have no reason to do it yet, as she is happy enough in the cot. :)

DS1 went into a bed a month after his 2nd birthday, was going to be before birthday but bed took 9 weeks to come in!
We moved him into a bed because DS2 was getting too big for bassinet so we needed cot!! DS2 will not sleep in cot grrr

DS1 transitioned to bed very well, first 5 nights he never got out then we had 2 weeks of getting up a few times before he finally went to sleep.

DD1 was 15 months. She kept waking up from banging her head or feet on the rails.
DD2 was 19 months. For the same reason as DD1.
Both times they've gone into a single bed with no dramas.

DD went into a toddler bed between 16 and 17months. There wasnt one particular reason why I changed her at that time. I just kind of decided the week before that I would move her into a toddler bed. Thought she would look cute and I am a gemini and love change! :rofl: Kept the cot up for 2weeks JIC but ended up taking it down. DD LOVES :heart: her bed so much. She even lets me lie on it sometimes and we read stories (yes I just fit curled up into the feotal position). She sleeps through the night in it and often wakesup and goes and gets her books and reads in her bed - well looks at them IYKWIM!

Its worked out really well as I have been able to lend my cot to my BF whose 2nd child grew very quickly out of the bassinette and their first child hadnt taken to a bed very well so still needed her cot.

DS went into a single bed at 21 months. I wanted to get him used to being out of the cot, so he wouldn't feel like DD had "taken" his cot. The transition was fairly smooth besides a few trips up and back to his room most nights.

DD is 16 months and we have no plans on putting her into a bed at any point in the near future. Mind you she is teeny tiny, so still has plenty of room for her to grow in the cot.

DS was about 20 mths when he went into a bed because he started to climb out of his cot. I was worried he'd hurt himself and figured a bed was the best way to avoid that.

DD was 16 mths and I'd had enough of getting up during the (cold, winter) nights and turned her cot into the junior bed. She happily ran into our room all by herself first night, no lights (and not a direct route) and that was that. Bliss - no dragging myself out of bed again. :D

DD just refused to sleep in the cot at 16 months old. Took me a few nights to realise what the screaming and no sleeping was for, but once we'd borrowed a foldout bed to see how she'd go, we never looked back. She was nearly too long for it anyway at that age.

DS has never slept in a cot he hated it from the get go. He went into his own bed (more often than not slept in by DH but hey :dunno:) from ours at 10months.

DS1 was about 17.5months old when we began day sleeps in a kids single bed (decided not to do the toddler one), did that for about 2weeks then started nights too- which would've been by 18months...which he transitioned quite well- i think him having chose his themed bed and putting rails up (which really enclosed it alot) helped. The reason was because we were expecting another baby so wanted to have DS1 adjusted to the new bed by the time DS2 arrived (DS1 was 20months by then).

For DS2 I'd like to try keeping him in the cot til at least 2- only to give us enough time to work out our next plan...like whether to have another baby, then that would determine what type of bed to get and where DS1 and DS2 will go. Because if we do decide to have 3rd child (which i'd prefer wait til after DS2 is 2) DS1's room could end up with a bunk beds and the cot would remain in DS2's current room. Hmm...will have wait and see what'll happen there.

DS was changed very abruptly at about 21 months as I had SPD and couldn't manage the cot, plus wanted him out before DD arrived (due when he was 2) - my mum had come over to help and we all realised we needed to seize the moment! There was no warning, no prep, just one morning he got out of his cot, then by naptime we had a bed in there & the cot was dismantled (no space for both). We were all so prepared for him to struggle but he actually slept better in the bed than he had been sleeping in the cot - he'd been tending to thump & bang in the cot. Seeing him travel around the bed as he sleeps I realise he was actually really cramped in the cot. We've got bed rails on and the bedroom door shut (high door handles) so it still isn't a free-for-all in terms of running around the house. Oh and he LOVES his big boy bed (it's actually a king single, so very big for a toddler boy!!).

DD was about 15 mths and moved because we needed the cot a few months later. Easy transition, we had the bed in with her cot for a while and she started off wanting day sleeps there then went to night sleeps.

DS is still in his cot at just over 2. He can't climb out because the mattress is at it's lowest point and he doesn't really try unless the rail guard is down. It is nearly time though, we find him in all sorts of weird positions with his legs hanging out and head pushing up on the rails. He sleeps so well now - from 7-6 without a worry so I am hoping that won't change!

ETA: We didn't actually put the bed IN with her cot :rofl:

DD co-sleeps but we've had a bed with rails set up since she was 15months because she hated the cot because of the bars

DS has always pretty much hated his cot & been too hard to settle in there so we've co-slept since he was about 5 months old. recently we turned his cot into a toddler bed & he's having his naps & the first sleep of the night in there. he's almost 16.5 months. he just doesn't seem to like any sort of bars (well, anything that gets between him & where he wants to be :lol:)

DS went into a bed a few weeks before he turned 2. I basically put him in a bed as he was quite a bad sleeper and I thought maybe a bed might make a difference as opposed to his cot, and it did! He's been happily going to bed ever since :)

DD went into a big bed at 14months, she started trying to climb out of her cot at 12months and by the time she was 14months had already managed to get/fall out 4 times already :O Funnily enough she was a crappy sleeper as well, once we put her in her big bed......she slept through! Could be a coincidence who knows but it was great! We had rails up for a bit, but she would use them as climbing devices as well so she ended up taking them off.....shes 3 now and only fallen out of bed maybe twice.

Both girls moved to beds out of necessity, we needed the cot. Dd1 was 20 months, she moved rooms and we pulled the side off the cot and out blankets down incase she fell out before getting her a little bed. She was old enough to be excited, it was a very special moment.

With dd2 she was / is going to be sharing with Ds. Just in case he came early we set the bed up in their room and dd decided to sleep in it at 14 months. She puts herself down for a nap and doesn't get in and out unless she is upset.

I'm thinking of moving my DD to her big girls bed soon. Did anyone experience difficulty with day naps after the transition? DD is 23 months & I predict that she'll just want to jump out & play in the room if she can ...
