Another birthday unnoticed ... to raise it, or leave it?
I've been with DH for 13 years.
Over the past few years, we've been paying more attention to whether or not FIL and MIL acknowledge my birthday.
2007 I turned 26. They forgot. No card, gift, call, nothing.
2008 I turned 27. They forgot. Ditto.
DH raised it with them, and was told by MIL that it was his fault because how were they supposed to know when my birthday was, if we didn't tell them ... WTF? They keep a diary, have a birthday book, and have known me very well since 1998. My birthday has not changed.
2009 I turned 28. DH reminded them a week or two in advance. They remembered! I think I got a phone call or email, and they sent me two little fabric covered albums in the post, as (I assume) a prezzie. There wasn't a card or anything, but I recognised the handwriting. The prezzie was completely not me, I was so pleased they remembered, I was not fazed by the lack of personalisation.
2010 I turned 29. They forgot. No card, gift, call, nothing.
2011 I turned 30. We had dinner with them for DS's first birthday the week before, and I casually slipped my party plans into conversation, and that it was the big "three oh". MIL and FIL looked annoyed, and said quite pointedly that they knew and it was in their diary.
The day came. The day went. Nothing. No call, text, email, card, gift, invitation to dinner, bottle of wine, skywritten sonnet, overstated helium balloon, home cooked meal or flowers. Nix. Nada. Nothing. Zip. Zero. Zilch.
DH was mortified.
Then the next day, we got an email from FIL to us, BIL and SIL saying that as we all would know, MIL's 60th was fast approaching (end of September) and started to talk about the plans. Hot air ballooning, expensive meal, etc.
DH was explosive.
DH calmed down enough to text FIL to say that we had got his email re MIL's birthday, and that my birthday had been the previous day, and had he and MIL remembered.
Nothing back.
That's really unusual, they're good people in lots of ways, so there's got to be something else going on ... right? but what?
And do we chase it? Does DH make further attempts at communicating to find out what's going on, or does that just look like we're trying to scab a gift?
I just don't want there to be some major blue and falling out over something as silly as a grown woman's birthday ...
But equally, if we (on one income for three people, two dogs and a mortgage) are expected to be shelling out hundreds of dollars for MIL's 60th, where is my birthday wishes, dinner, cake, gift and overpriced card?
Confuzzled. And undecisive.
