Screaming and will not sleep unless I pick her up.19mo

So another thread on a little one not sleeping. I just need to know if what I am now doing is ok.
DD used to grab your hands as she lay down and would eventually go off to sleep. Now as soon as we try to get her into her sleeping bad the tears start and then gets extreme when she gets into the cot. She throws the dummy, pushes your hand away and just sits with her eyes closed and screams. She is now 19 months old and all this started a few weeks ago so today my husband put her in the cot for the morning 12.30 sleep (one sleep in the day) and routinely said calmly, lie down , time for sleep , mummy and daddy love you over and over but she wouldn't have a bar of it. She was just screaming so we just had to let her scream and come in every few mins or so and say the same thing over and over.
I am now at work and its been 1hr 40 mins and she was still screaming. DH doesn't know what to do so I just suggested to get her up and put her on the couch.
It pulls at ALL my heart strings and I am beside myself with not knowing how to comfort her when she clearly needs the sleep.
ANY ideas will be welcomed.

have you tried putting her on your bed/a bed & lying next to her? that works for us. i know it might not be practical with another child in the house but could be worth a try?

She does fall asleep like that but its just going to be hard for us when the next one comes along....five in the bed? might need another bed!

Maybe she is dropping the day sleep?

Soetimes they go through stages of not wanting to sleep. There's not much point fighting it if they really don't want to.

Our 19.5 month old does this and has done this for nearly 4 months.

The only way she gets back to sleep is if DH (not mum) picks her up and comforts her then lays with her on his chest. Once she is asleep he can move her back into her cot but its getting trickier the older she gets.

I have wondered if its her starting to transition to no day sleeps but she is SO tired around 12 she'd crash regardless. Its the night waking and not being able to get back to sleep that bothers me.

I have no answers for you but wanted you to know you're not alone x x x x

My DD is 14.5 months and has regularly gone without a day sleep. SHe started at about 9 months! At 12 months she started having one 45min nap regularly again but lately often ditches it again.

I guess you just need to roll with it and not stress out about the small stuff.. if she doesn't want to sleep, she wont. It's just that she does it for her night sleep too. Maybe she is not tired as she slept in the day?.. total catch 22.

DD is going through a horrible sleep (or lack of!) phase at the moment but it's at night - I've posted about it too if you want a read and to see what others have said.

With regards to your DD though, has she cut her eye teeth? DD cut hers at 18 months and to say it was hell is an understatement. She had problems with sleep during the day and night for about 5 weeks. She would usually end up finally nodding off for her day nap but not without a fight. I often ended up giving her another bottle to help settle her and some pain relief. Besides the odd bottle at nap time, we were very careful to stick to our usual routines for both day naps and night sleeps despite DD playing up so much. Staying calm with her did really help too but I'll admit I always found it hard, and still do, to stay calm at night when I'm tired and need sleep too.

Yes Taurean, she got 8 teeth at once when she was about 12 months old... she seams to have a pretty high tolerance for pain! she was really not a drama at that time. I think i did see a molar coming through last week AND she had her 18 month needles a few days ago... but all this was manifesting before the needles. I am guessing we just need to give it a bit... it's just that my Mum keeps telling me that it is 'not right' for her to come into our bed at this age and my DH is really ****ty at the idea too. He hates it (i kind love the one on one cuddles... who wouldn't!) so I am torn between making her settle in her own bed and giving her cuddles, yet I know if I give her cuddles I just make 'a rod for my own back' so to speak... aaaahhhhhhh, crazy times...

With the day sleeps I'd go with the flow... I remember Elijah went through similar at a similar age, not wanting to sleep in the day but then continued to again and now only has 2 or 3 a week, just as a catch up I think. Nights, he was still BFing, but now will actually fall asleep on dad's shoulder and then transfers to his bed. If he wakes up at night I have to reach over (he's in his cot next to me in our room lol... yup, STILL haha) and hold his hand lol. I just do what I gotta do so that I get sleep! If she didn't have day sleeps every day it might be easier to get her down at night, I've noticed it in a big way how much easier it is and I don't have to spend literally hours laying next to Elijah to try to put him to sleep. DD will have a whole fortnight+ where she doesn't want a day sleep. Massive development and such throws everything out of whack!

Thanks guys, She slept in my bed from 11 last night just wants hugs & cuddles. I just cant do it forever I guess!

:hug: Hopefully it's just a phase. I know you said she cut 8 teeth at once but did that include her eye teeth? I have to say, DD's eye teeth were the most evil ones of all and several of my friends have said the same about their kids.

It's so tough when they won't sleep alone, especially when you need the rest too. :hug:

Dd became very clingy when I was pg. In fact it got worse and worse to the point she stopped going to anyone. Then as soon as ds was born her independent streak emerged again and she wants me to "go away mummy" often...even at bed time.

It's just a phase. She's still so small and soon you'll have another baby to care for...it's her last chance to ave you all to herself and she knows it.

If your dh doesn't like cosleeping can he sleep somewhere else? I tend to think a grown man is more suited to sleeping alone than a small child.

This was my thoughts.

Colby started dropping day sleeps when she was around that age. But Briley, just turned 5, can still have a day sleep no worries.

We have to remember that each child is different.

My 19 month old is like this - she is cutting the bottom eye teeth. She's in a double bed though so I sit on the bed and wait until she falls asleep. If the baby is unsettled then I rock her in my arms while rocking the baby in her rocker with my foot. Then I transfer her to the bed when asleep.

She also wakes up in the middle of the night. Then she is in our bed, which doesn't worry me at all - it's the 4.5 year old sleeping with us that's a problem lol we have the baby in her bed next to ours, so don't stress too much about what happens when the next one comes along :)
