...that you can't stand a shortened version of?
I know everyone likes to give people nicknames, but if you dislike the name that would be the natural nickname of a long name that you (or in this case - DH) love - would you still go with it, or just find another name?

I would. You can steer people towards a different nick name or use the full name. My DS is William. A couple of people have tried calling him Willy. Didn't catch on lol

My mum tries to call DS Ari, which I don't like and I correct her when she does it - mostly its in text messages now. She called DD2 Edie when she was first born, and I told her to never call her that because I hate it (and really, Eden is a short enough name!) and she's never done it again....
I would and I wouldn't have any hesitations telling people to use their full name.
If you don't mind telling people, no his name isn't (for example) Fred, it is Fredrick...then do it. If you don't want to be saying that forever, then don't!
I dont like the default nick name for Spock. but there are other ways to shorten it, and think it is really her choice anyway...
so I did it.
My cousins name is Samantha and my aunty insisted that is what every one was to call her which worked out fine until she became an adult and now everyone calls her Sam, except my aunty lol.
DS2 is Daylen and I liked 'Daylee' for short. Everyone calls him 'Day day' *shudder*
I have always been Catherine. I had to correct a teacher once, in year 7, who was calling me Cathy. I was ignoring him, at first because I did not register it was me, and then to make a point. He eventually added my surname to Cathy. I replied "my name is Catherine." He apologised.
My SIL asked permission to call my daughter Ellie - but she never has, it does not suit her.
We considered Madeleine for her, but the thought of her being called maddy made me cringe (and it was a very popular name)
I know people who have used the short version (Sam, Wil, Ben) and had to correct people who try to lengthen it.
No. I would feel like a bit of a douche telling people not to shorten it so I'd either get over it or choose another name. I'm super fussy with names and every part of them though. Like, I liked the name Jonas but would never use it because the first part sounds like Joan and I don't like that name.
My cousin is Tom and had the name lengthening problem. His name started being "Just Tom".
Its not that I hate the short name with a passion, I just think its too normal and plain to go with the rest of the kids names - ITMS? Whereas the long version of the name is freaky, bogan and unusual like all the others :lol:
I'd be careful because you can tell others but you wont be able to tell your kid how to use their own name lol. You know my eldest, she refuses to even acknowledge she has a longer name! Its the nickname and thats it. Although we did all call her that so probably encouraged it, you just never know what the kid will latch onto and like and you could end up stuck with the nickname based on their preference!
Yeah like DD1 - she's been requesting we call her by her full first name instead of the nickname. Which obviously we don't care about because we named her it.. LOL
I have another name that could have a nickname, but I don't mind that, its a nickname of one of my friends - so I only have good thoughts about it.
But of course, DH isn't keen on it.... argh..
I dislike the name Annie and still named my daughter Ann*ika.. I used to correct people if they shortened it but dont have to now as she will tell you thats not her name.
Te*leah, I dont like Leah either but no one has ever tried to shorten hers, cept for her sisters when they couldnt pronounce it properly.
and Yep M*illana, don't like Milly either nor Lani... her name has been shortened by me to Narni and I will tell others that the first too are not acceptable unless she asks. Can not stand lani but I think that's because ex mil has always tried to call her that no because of the actual name.
if it is a really obvious nickname that people always do- like calling a zachary 'zac' or nicholas 'nick', then no, i wouldn't use it.
Sort of, its the first 4 letters of the name and it makes a normal name, but its not the main focus of the name itms:
I'd do it anyway. DD is A.nnabelle, and we call her B.elley or B.elbo - I don't even know why! DD has now started calling herself B.elbo, it's probably the easiest for a two year old to say. Anyone who is close to us, including daycare, will call her either of those three names.
MIL used to try calling her Anna, Annie, Belle and Bella. We just told her that's not her name and in the end she gave up - no one else used those names so why should she!
If in future DD decides to go by one of those names or something different, that's fine. It's up to her, and because it's her I won't mind what her name is. I think it's easy enough to get over dislike of a name when it's your own child requesting it.
Same here. Our little guy is Tom, and we named him that because that is exactly what we planned to call him. He gets Thomas, Tomo, Tommy, Tomcat :rolleyes: Can't win! It drives him crazy. It's JUST TOM ok, he often says.:
I'm not a fan of nicknames personally - even though my own name get shortened all the time from K.elly to K.el - so I decided to give my kids short names to hopefully avoid the nickname thing happening.
DD, T.ara and DS2 L.iam have no issue as there names are hard to add or subtract extra letters from by DS1 R.hys has been called R.hysy from day 1, but I think that is more because his brother and sister have 2 syllables in their names and his is only 1. But I've started to be more conscious of using his correct name but it doesn't bother me which one gets used as I know when he gets older the baby name version will get dropped IYKWIM.
My opinion is if you like a name then you make sure everyone using the pronunciation you choose - it's not up to anyone else to make a new name. I would tell them his name is ..... not .....
