So am babysitting for a friend and tripped on last step and hurt ankle ( I can stand on it but moving it hurts and there is a big black lump coming up at front) - should I ice it, keep elevated?? What is best?

RICE
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation
Elevate with some ice and strap when you can.
i was coming in to post exactly the same as MG!
Thanks, it is pretty swollen but not too painful. Have ice and it elevated and the kids are doing me a puppet show :-)

Any thoughts on if I should get it checked out or just continue with RICE.
Just to mess things up...'they' now say MEAT. Movement Exercise Analgesia and Treatment. As immobility can cause more damage.
I would be inclined to get it checked, although with that amount of swelling they may not be able to X-ray it.
Woah. Yeah I'd be seeing a doctor about that.
Whoa!! I'd definitely get that xrayed!
How does it work do I go to GP for a referral?
I'd go to hospital today.
Hospital is easier they will xray rather than having to get a referral, wait for an appointment then back to dr.
Yikes!! Yup X-rays needed, hopefully it's just ligament damage
Xx
If you have access to a radiology place today, I'd get gp referral and go that way - will be quicker than emergency.
X-ray. I still have ankle damage from when I broke mine and didn't look after it properly!
As usual I agree with Rouge.
I still have significant ankle damage from when mine fractured and I treated it as a sprain
Well I went to GP, we don't think any damage to ankle bones, she can prod and poke it with no pain at all. She thinks unlikely have broken anything given the lack of pain, but if anything would be fractured metatarsal (footballers injury very appropriate with world cup on :-)). I have a referral to get xray tomorrow if is worse or think I need it but otherwise just need to RICE it. It looks less swollen already and I am happy with that course of action, I think I would be in more pain if was anything worse and I slept fine last night and have no issues apart from working.
I'm so glad you are having an X-ray. My GP misdiagnosed mine :( and now it's super problematic.
And I hope it's fine and heals quickly x
