Ok crafty women. I need motivation to finish some projects, so I thought we could do a challenge to motivate each other. We can share photos when we're finished too!
I have to finish a quilt for dd, and appliqué on a top.
What are your works in progress?

A knitted jacket for the new bub, and a bedspread I am crocheting.
The bedspread has been a wip for 3 years now I think....but I am more interested in finishing the jacket and perhaps even starting and finishing a knitted wrap for this bub - EDD 15th May!!
My DH constantly picks on me for all my WIP projects that remain half finished.
So before I get too carried away I'll set my first goals now -
1. Finish knitting jacket
To achieve this I need to knit the front right side and the two sleeves before sewing up and adding buttons.
So mini-goal number one - knit front right side by this time next week.
So I am off on a holiday to Hamilton Island on Wednesday, returning on Monday. So hopefully by then I will have a result. That doesn't mean I don't need motivation in the meantime!!
So what is everyone else doing as their first goal and mini goal?
Ok seeing as I've literally just cut out the pattern for DS's pyjamas, I'm going to finish those. This will be my first ever clothing item once I've finished!

I have a quilt in progress...had the borders pinned ready to sew when realised I've cut one of the patches HALF AN INCH too big...now I have to unpick, trim, re sew, re-iron (it's been mooshed up in a basket for 2 year LOL), re pin and then sew the border back on...then quilt & finish. That should be do-able, right???
For sure MD! Lol. Man, that would be so annoying! i know with the patchwork puppy I'm making (which has been stuffed in my box of unfinished projects for over a year) the squares don't line up..I'm sure they were all the same size to begin with though, so I musn't have sewn them all with the same margin. I'm over it though...as long as it is finished I'll be happy and don't really care how crappy it looks! Lol. I have one side of it done, just need to sew all the squares together for the other side, sew both sides together, stuff it and then do nose/eyes.
My first mini goal though will be: I want at least two of the door snakes done by the end of this weekend. Don't know if I will be able to stuff them, decided on sand to fill them with so I just need to source a bag of beach sand. Waiting on material my mum is posting to me to do the two I need for the double doors in our bedroom and the dining room.

I started a patchwork quilt for dd this time last year and have done the main part - just need to do the last border, buy the batting, quilt then bind. This is my first ever so that's a lot for me - and i'm really unsure about the actual 'quilting' bit of it - i'm assuming i'll just go 'in the ditch' as opposed to the beautiful swirly patterns i've seen as i'm not very neat and this being my first time.

PlonkeeMumma - do you know what batting you are using and what the recommended stitch proximity (not the official terminiology I dont think) is?
Depending on whats going inside the quilt, is how close together the quilting stitches will need to be so that it doesn't fall apart with age.
Plonkeemumma, depending on the size of the quilt, sending it out to be quilted on a large frame can be a really great idea ... you need to be able to roll it up and get it under the arm of your machine...if you can't do that with ease then send it out. If you are planning to quilt your own & it's a manageable size, quilting with a walking foot in straight lines can be easier to get a neat result.
Pandora - shows how much i know - hadn't even thought of that! It's for a cot sized quilt so nothing too thick - hopefully something natural. When i buy the batting i will ask for recommendations on stitch size/proximity - thanks for that insight
Marydean - thanks also - i might consider this - i will have to see if i can get it under my arm. I love the swirls that can be done though i think it might be expensive but would love to get it done - though definately not by me

I need to finish Panda's quilt... but I think for April, finishing the patchwork top of the quilt will be enough :p
It's log cabin squares, which are done, but I need to cut & add black borders to each square to make it a bit bigger. And that's not part of the original pattern so I have to think about that lol. Plus I have to unpack everthing & pack it back up every time I sew :crying:
It's double bed sized so I might send it out :think: I quilted Pie's cot quilts myself & only just managed to fit them.
Kazbah are your daisies for your rug? How are you making / incorporating them?
If its a cot quilt, you could also just buy a hoop and hand quilt it?

Ok here is my list for April to finish (one of my NY resolutions was to not make all presents this year, and at least part of them needs to be recycled/upcycled materials)
2 x birthday tops for 1 year olds (just appliqué designs onto tops)
Sew material onto back of knitted butterfly for 2 month old gift
1 x fabric catepillar for 1 year old birthday
1 x dress for DD to wear to wedding reception at end of May
1 x dress for DD from b/w fabric material
Some type of curtain arrangement for balcony door to keep draught out.
Feels good to write it down, once I have said I am going to do something I really like to do it so I think this thread will help keep me on track. (I have inherited my dad's trait of starting lots of projects and not finishing them!)

don't worry Fleur..I'm worried I won't be able to do what I've aimed for! It's just so hard with DD and everything else I have to do, but I would really love to get back into it again. The only place I can do it is the kitchen table, but our landlord wants to come and take that away (it's hers and was in the house when we moved in) so I have no ideawhat I'll do then! I'd really love a proper sewing cabinet/worktop

I only have one project on the go at the moment, a cross stitch that I started a year ago that I haven't picked up for around 3 months now!
So my goal is to actually get it out and work on it! And hopefully have it finished in 3 months in time for my 3rd wedding anniversary, as it's our wedding sampler :)
I'm a bit embarrased... I had sudden inspiration to make a bag out of my favorite top that ripped a few weeks ago. So yesterday I bought the interfacing from spotlight and then started and finished the bag last night :redface: I was up til 12.30 working on it... and I only need to hand stitch the liner closed now. I've popped a photo up in my blog if you want to see.
Right now off to finish the actual WIPs rather than starting a new one!
:redface: Ive just come back from spotlight...well I had to go there because they sent me a voucher..spend $100 get $40 off...whats a girl to do :dunno:
I bought the fabric for our 4 poster canopy bed (that is still onlayby) top rail to which I would LOVE to make a foot end blanket and small pillows for the couch.
AND
I also bought some fabric for mini me to make a blanket for the foot end of her bed to.
NOw only prob is...ive never patchworked before :o What the hell do I do???? HELP

Ryatha - The bag looks great. That is just the sort of thing I would do - I get so enthusiastic about starting things as soon as have the idea.
Reminds me I got very enthusiastic about making a bag out of felted woolen jumpers, and got some jumpers and felted them but haven't got any further - oh well that will have to be for the May list - enough to do in April already.
This morning I sewed up two of the door snakes, hot pink in colour! Just waiting on the material my mum posted to me to arrive, hopefully tomorrow, so I can cut out the other two I need. Then I have to get some sand but that might have to wait until the week after next when we have more money.
Mind you the sewing machine was sitting on the kitchen table for almost a week before I finally set it up this morning :lol:
Well is over half way through April, and I have only completed one item on my list, 1 of the tops for 1 year olds. I have however added some ideas to my list to May - and made one top that wasn't on my list.
I must focus!

i need to learn how to hand sew and i have no one who can teach me.
I cant use my sewing machine when the bub is sleeping because it wakes him up, and i cant use it a lot of the time when hes awake cos he plays with the cord and dh isn't there to supervise him.
Is it hard? I have tried but everything just falls apart.
I'm jumping on the bandwagon halfway through as I have just looked at my ticker and realised I am running out of time!!!:o
Even though I just got some divine patterns from the US for clothes for DD using some fabric I have had stashed for her for months (love the internet), I have to be ruthless and have wittled my list down to must do projects in the next weeks...
- finish covering the couch before the new baby arrives so I can wash slip covers if they get baby spewed/wee-ed/pooed on!
- cushions done, couch proper to go!- Make pressie for dear friend for the anniversary of her angel baby coming up in May. I'm thinking two patchwork cushions - one for her 3 year old and one for her stillborn daughter... hmmm
- fabric bought, cushion insert ready, design and embroidery to be finalised- Baby wipes for my new cloth stash
- gotta work out the best fabric and get some...
Now just have to get machine back from repairs!!!! :pray:
...oh and get to the cutting out before I am too big to get down on the floor :rofl:
Maz, what type of advice are you looking for re: patchwork? As in quilting?? I'm only a newbie, but I could suggest some good references to get you started...
PlonkeeMumma: I found quilting in the ditch a chore... really hard to keep it in line! Instead I sewed 1/4" from the seams or on the diagonal... or both! It enhanced the pattern on the quilt! Of course this is going to work if your quilting patches are small enough to have you sewing the minimum distance required by the batting. If you are interested I can pm you the link to the inspiration I found online so you can make sense of my description! (I'm not sure if I can post the link here)

I have a question about fat quarters -what are they used for?
Fat quarters are just an easy way to buy/sell lots of different types of fabrics, as they are a smaller cut than a full width of fabric. For a quilter, it means you can build up your 'stash' or buy heaps of different pattens to make up a quilt without having a heap left over.
If you are looking for ideas other than quilts for what to do with them, try googling "Fat quarter projects" The 'sew mama sew' blog has a heap of ideas for using the smaller cuts of fabric. I'm not going to look as I don't need any more projects at the moment!!!
Otherwise the "moda bake shop" is another good stop for little projects with quilting cottons.
I always wanted to know what fatquarters were for too but was too embarrassed to ask :redface:

I also made a pair of pants for Fred for when she is taken for walks in the pram, nice and warm fleece with extra room to go over pants. I've popped up photos in my blog, along with a couple of ramblings about a&d... my other passion

my April goal was to finish Panda's quilt top - what I have done so far, I did a year ago :o just after Easter. It's come out a bit smaller than I wanted & I was going to add a black border to each square to make it a bit bigger & define them more - after looking at it this morning though I'm not so sure. It might be better as it is.
I've posted pics HERE and I would really really appreciate some feedback.
WDYT - should I just join all the squares I have (& make it a throw instead of a bedcover), or add black borders?
ETA - I haven't photographed them all but there are 25 squares.
I really like the idea of the black borders, so that each panel is defined, can't wait to see it finished, the panels look fantastic!
Love the nappy and pants ryatha, and I can't remember if I commented on your bag that was a top the other day, but it looks great! I am really loving all the recycling of materials, so cool!
Hoping to finish the biased binding on the second bib this afternoon or evening if I don't get super tired, which is what happens most day :( Then it is jsut snapping and working on the quilt.
Went to Spottys and got more thread for the quilt so no excuse to work on it now :lol:
