Dressing Kids Alike.

Not sure if there is already a thread on this but just wondering what everyones thoughts are on dressing kids in the same or similar clothes?

I have 2 girls and often look at some of the outfits and think ohhh wouldn't it be cute if they had that in DD1's size too or vice versa.

I bought matching 1 :heart: daddy suits for the girls when Z was born, they were also given matching Super Baby tops from a family friend and have often worn them at the same time.
The other day i found some Mini Mango Flanny shirts and thought what the hell and bought them 1 each.

I am going to put them both in them with jeans today, do you think it's ok to do this if your kids aren't twins?

I think its cute to put them in the same things. I find it more weird when parents dress their kids the same everyday and even more weird/not ok when mothers dress their daughters the same as themselves. When I see mummy daughter twins it really makes me think what is going on in your head woman?

I don't think there's anything wrong with it. But I don't like it LOL. They're individuals, and I would dress them separately (twins included) It can look cute, but I dunno.. something about it I just don't like.

But that's just me!

I used to do it all the time when we went out. If I liked something & it was in both sizes I bought it. If not I'd find something else.
These days DD1 would shoot me, but every time I buy them something they winge that the other got the 'better' one, so I try to get everything similar, but not the same iykwim. The same but different colours or something.
I personally think they look so cute dressed the same when they are little :)

I realised with horror the other day that DD and I had almost left the house is basiacally the same top (same colour) i went home and changed! Thats too wierd! Im not keen on dressing twins in the same clothes all the time, i think i takes away thier own identity, especially when they are older. But the same top every now and again is probably quite cute! But thats just my opinion.
I used to look after twins ages ago and the mother used to dress them identically, i could never tell them apart! maybe thats why i dont like it LOL :)

DD1 (9) and DD2 (18 months) have some matching clothes - they both love it :)

I often dress the girls in similar colours (most of the time without even realising it!) but I don't tend to dress them identically. Just my opinion, but I like them to be individual. I think buying the same thing in different colours is ok, but exactly the same would weird me out if I did it to my kids. Just being totally honest ;) I could do it though I guess, because even though they are 15 months apart, they look totally different, one with dark hair and one with blonde hair.......hmmmmmm ;) You do whatever you want to. You're their mumma and you dress them in whatever you like while you can! :)

it kind of annoys me when it is ALL the time. especially with twins, because i just think they are the same it many other ways they should be able to express themselves differently. there is a family at day care who dress their identical twins exactly the same all the time. they have the same cuddle toy, the same sheets and same pillow case, same bag etc. i think it is probably easier to just buy 2 items when you have twins. maybe that is why they do it. having said that, i usually dress my girls in the same outfit or same outfit different colour when they are in special photos or on special occasions. my older girl really likes it.

My eldest 2 boys are 16 months apart and I would sometimes dress them the same, it tended to be mainly in the nicer outfits as I would want to buy them and then think I can't buy it for one and not the other. The boys are now, nearly 5 and 3/12 and I find they are acutally in the same size clothes as No 2 is a big boy, I end up buying 2 of a lot of things as there are tantrums if one hasn't it and the other hasn't. I don't thinki it isn't letting them be individuals, my eldest certainly has a strong opinion on what he will or won't wear.

Also sometimes without realising it I will dress them both the same, eg navy tracksuit pants and red jumper (different jumpers just same colours) without even realising what I have done

Sometime we do this... not the same but similar. Like if we are going to a party then we will all wear jeans and a nice top... not matching but similar!

Today is my brothers wedding and I got the girls a very similar outfit...actually the same but different colours. DD1 is wearing a white skivvy with a pink pinafore and pink leggins. DD2 is wearing a white skivvy with the same pinafore but in purple and white tights. I dont do this often, but because we are going out to a church, I thought it would be nice. Generally they dress like me... in trackies and jumpers!

As for dressing the same all the time, I'm not into that. It is about individuality. Plus DD1 loves pink so she choses her colour and dd2 looks better in purples and yellows!

On the odd occassion we have all gone out in stripes.... and it was unintentional and when I realised that we all looked the same... it kind of felt silly!

Noone is even close to the same in this house. We each have our own colours - when we move to a bigger house we really need new towels so I'm going to get us all different colours of towels too lol

DD#1 is pale pink.
DD#2 is lime green and yellow.
I am brown and olive.
Partner is purple and hot pink.
Baby is, so far, blue and grey (with a lot of leftover green and yellow).

DD#2 is getting extremely good at sorting the washing out into piles of who owns what :)

Like you Kitten, my 2 loved it when DD 10yo and DD 1 yo had the same jacket...awww too cute.

I haven't ever seen the mummy-child matching combo though :o!

I'm not a fan of dressing kids in the same clothes. Occassionally it's ok I guess but it's just not for me. Why not the similiar outfits but different colours - KWIM?? I guess I just don't get it.

The girls are wearing the same top today and it really is basically a once every now and then thing, even with the same tops they don't always wear them at the same time.
They ARE individuals and i am sure will have very different personality's but at this age i guess i'm not worried, just thought i would see what others think.

my mum did it with me and my sister and were 4 years apart and if she couldnt find stuff matching she would buy matching colours :o my grandma joined in too

I have hats that match my girls and bandannas :) ............. We even have matching baby carriers LOL!

It's all a bit of fun - it's never a whole outfit or anything like that, the girls have a couple of matching skirts and t-shirts, the rest of the out fit is different........

Yep..agree. Although it wasn't me my Mum used to dress the same, it was my Sister's who are only 10mths apart in age.
The boys have one top the same in different sizes, I make sure they don't wear it at the same time...in public anyway Lol.

I'm surprised so many people dislike it so strongly! I think it's cute, if the kids are happy then go for it! I prefer same outfit, different colour but exactly the same wouldn't bother me either. My two are different gender but I'll put them both in say, blue trackies and a Kathmandu fleece (blue for him, green for her). They love it and if it's a trackies and jumper sort of day, why wouldn't we all wear trackies and a jumper?? If I'm wearing trackie dacks and a polar fleece jacket as well does that make us all matchy/matchy??? Aahh... sh*t... now I'm gonna worry every time I dress us!!!!

I'm not a fan of it either, just not for me. But hey, we all do things differently.....doesn't really matter.
There is almost a 3yr age gap between my two boys, so I shop in two different sections anyway, but I prob wouldn't get them matching stuff. I like them to have their own things along with what they like or their individual personalities. I actually do the opposite and never get them anything the same, trying to think now & I don't think I've got them anything matching, hmmm might have a look.

My girls often have similar outfits on, I think they have one or two outfits exactly the same - but I rarely put the entire outfit on them at the same time - I mix it up a bit! But their outfits are usually complimentary :)

A few times I have matched my outfit with one of theirs - totally unintentionally! It doesn't really phase me though, who cares what other people think! ;)

I personally wouldn't do it & I don't like it when I see it unless they are twins - then I think it is ok/cute but only when they are little.

There is 18 mths btw my sister & I and she disliked getting the same clothes as me - my mum even used to make clothes exactly the same for us! (I can recall corduroy brown knickerbockers! lol) Looking back now I guess she thought it would save for argument - I don't think she would have thought it looked good/cute as my mum is not that type of person. Relatives also used to buy us the same clothes, toys everything.

My sister & I dress very differently now, probably since we were teenagers. I think we have bought a couple of tops the same recently but make sure if we are going out together that we both don't wear it!

I'm the same, it wasn't Mum who did it - it was a pet peeve of hers too, but it was Nan and my Aunties who used to buy my cousin and I the exact same clothes only in different colours for Christmas we were only 6 month apart and I hated it!! I vowed never to do it to my kids LOL. Also because I was bigger than my cousin it always looked crappy on me, but great on her so that was another reason I turned off it. I can't do it to my girls even if I wanted to because of their colouring. DD1 has slightly fairer skin and lighter brown eyes so pastels suit her better but DD2 is darker with darker tones and darker eyes so she can wear really bold, bright colours.

LOL at the Mummy-Daughter twins though - I know two woman who do that with their daughters and it creeps me out - their clothes are nearly identical and the one with the older daughter is worse because the DD is around 19 and they even dye their hair the same colour and wear it in the same style

Nickle, at home it is trackies all the way and often they will wear similar looking clothes, but for 'good' clothes I avoid it at all costs.

I laugh everytime I walk in to my IL's house, they have a family photo taken back in the 80's and both DH, his brother AND father have matching FLORAL shirts on.......what was my MIL thinking!!

DD1 lives in trackies and hoodies and honestly it's such a performance getting her dressed that if DD2 is half as much trouble I won't care less whether they match, don't match or clash, I'll just be grateful to get them both dressed and out the door by midday.

If it's only occasionally I don't think there is any harm! If you were doing it every day then that would be a bit odd..lol. but every once in a while I think is ok. Like a PP my mummy 'uniform' is trackies and a jumper during winter, DD is dressed in trackies and a jumper too, as she doesn't really have any other style of clothing, so we are dressed 'the same' but different colours/styles ITMS.

We got family portraits done a couple of years ago, and I dressed my 3 girls in the same white shirt, and the 2 older ones had matching skirts. I think the photos are beautiful, and don't think myself a weirdo for having dressed them that way.
My older 2 have a few items the same, but they tend not to wear them at the same time.

Today for the first time to go to a friend's sons Christining did I dress both boys in jeans and matching long sleeved tops. Looked very cute but No one actually saw as both had Jumpers on all day as it was chilly!!!!

I don't think its weird if sometimes but if all the times its weird!! The mummy daughter thing is very strange!!

Whatever floats your boat i say :) if you like it there's no problem. Yes they are individuals but they are little so I'm sure they don't pick out and buy their own clothes so wouldn't know their own style yet.
I only have one but my gf and I have girls just over 12 months apart and have bought similar things for the two of them to wear at the same time.

I don't have a problem with dressing kids the same but its not something I would try to do. I think it come from the fact that I am a fraternal twin and people used to buy me and my brother similar clothes in the boy/girl versions. While that in itself isn't too bad I used to be hated being called "the twins" so in my eyes that just contributed to it. ITMS?

I don't get the individuality thing personally. I think they are individuals no matter how they are dressed. They are who they are & nothing will ever change that.
My girls don't look very similar, but if I buy something & I know they'll both like it, why not just buy it for them both? Just because they are different doesn't mean they don't like the same things.
I knew identical twins who dressed the same but in different colours & they loved it, lol. They liked confusing people ;) We dress them the same as everyone else for school every single day. Doesn't that take away their individuality as well? (Although I know its more than that, but ykwim?)
As long as they both like the clothes & are wanting to wear them, by choice, why would it matter. If they hated the idea & refused, fair enough. Nothing will change who they are inside :)

In relation to the hair thing, a mum that used to be in our mums group gave her DD the same haircut as hers...... it looked awful. Not b/c they were the same but b/c the haircut was horrible.....:S what was she thinking....

I don't think you are a weirdo - it's just personal choice. Having said that though, DH step-siblings got a portrait done of all of them (there are 7 of them) and they had black or white t-shirts & jeans, which actually looked good.

no kids yet but wont be dressing them the same. I think it's ok to have the same outfit each but I'd only ever dress them in it on different days, I don't see how that is different to the younger child wearing the older childs hand me down once the older child grows out of it. I don't even like it if dh and I are wearing the same colours etc, I make him change if I've just taken forever deciding what to wear lol

I don't think you or anyone else is a weirdo for doing it :hug: it just isn't my thing :)

I dunno about the individuality thing. It's a bit of yes and a bit of no. If I let my eldest DD express her individuality through clothing I shudder at the thought of what she would wear :rofl: I'd have a little Kath or Kim on my hands LOL. Seriously though, its much the same as baby names - I might hate what someone has called their child and would never use the name myself but they love it so whats the harm kwim? I often get asked if my two are twins as it is (I have no idea why, they don't look all that similar) let alone if I dressed them the same and I want them to be comfortable in what they are wearing and not feel forced to wear something the same as their sister purely because that's what I want them to wear. I don't like being told what to wear so why should they?

I dont like it, My daugters have such different tastes, different things suit them and I want them to have their own personalites and all that :)
