Hi, just wondering what your preferred alternative to Milo (as a hot drink) is?
The organic hot chocolate that comes in the dark brown cylinder with gold print. No idea what it's called - sorry.
I like i think it is Vittoria brand Hot chocolate.
Also i am sure when i was BFing i used to drink aktivite hot too.
Expensive but nice is Horlicks
I like aktavite
Oh, thanks!!
We havent had Milo for years, and I try to stear clear of Nestle as much as possible.... and I dont think the Cadbury's hot choccy is also fairtrade yet?
Will get some and give it a go!!
Are you looking for alternative hot chocolates? or alternatives TO hot chocolate?
In terms of non-coffee, non-caffeine, I have found that red (rooibos?) tea is great
you could also try hot milk with vanilla essence. There is also malt, or white hot choc, thats super tasty :)
Or for a low fat option, hot water with lemon and honey never fails!
i got onto aktivite too when i was bfing and love it now
To the aktivite drinkers - how do you prepare it?
I remember drinking it as a child, but it's changed? Doesn't look quite so much like fairy poo as it used to...
I grew up on akta vite and still drink it now. It's less sweet than milo... I also tend to sprinkle it on toast and ice cream...
In cold milk I just stir it in... and scoop of the crunchy bits from the top. In hot milk, it dissolves more thoroughly so you don't get the crunchy bits and I find I have to use less or it's just too strong (I have my milk fairly weakly chocolate flavoured).
Thanks everyone for the answers. I probably should have explained up front: I'm not motivated by virtuous ethical considerations (although I appreciate the free-trade suggestions), but I've been having problems with insomnia, I get a second wind quite late at night. I do like to have a hot drink about an hour before bed but I've started wondering if it isn't the Milo gee-ing me up. I have a lurking suspicion they have changed their formulation (to include more cocoa? or sugar?) because I vaguely remember thinking the flavour had changed.
So I'm basically wanting to road-test some alternatives so I don't have to give up my late night hot drink.
Don't be suggesting camomile tea either...that just ain't the same :p
Definitely try the rooibos tea suggestion. Nerada do one with vanilla flavour, you make it up mostly with hot water, then add a bit of milk. No sweetener really required (although honey is yum) and It's caffeine free.
Or, make your own malted milk, using malt powder from a brew shop, and sugar and vanilla essence. That's yum. But, sugar. Not so good on the sleepsies.
definitely try the adundant earth organic hot chocolate hun...it is to die for!
LOVE chai latte. Home-made is best, but a bit epic. You can also get yum (full of sugar!) powders.
The chai latte sachets are wonderful... but judging by the effect they have on me are loaded with caffeine.
Ecco or Carro (same thing 2 different brands) Ecco comes in a stripey cylindrical container. It is a great alternative to tea, coffee and milo. It's caffeine and sugar free (pretty sure about the sugar cause its slightly bitter). I love it with a little honey and drank it through my pregnancies and continued on afterwards cause its so yummy. Also very cheap (about $3 for a tin that last me about 2-4 weeks with 1 or 2 cups a day)
I drink (actually have a cup next to me at the moment!) Lady Grey tea. It's quite flowery and light, very nice. Or I second the chai latte :) With a bit of honey in it too.
Chai latte!!! mmmmm
coooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooffeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee (fair trade, of course :D)
I think they have changed the milo Marydean. I seem to get super buzzed off it too although I rarely have sugar in my diet so could be a sensitivity? Just noticed it in the last tin though.
I drink the organic ceylon chai tea in a green box. Natures something? I add a teaspoon of honey and about 1/4 of the mug is milk. I use the woolies honey that has the toffee sort of flavour (name eludes me) and it's super yum!
horlicks horlicks horlicks!!!!
My sister got me a rooibos chai blend from I think it was adore tea? So it's caffeine free too, and so bautifully flavoursome.
have you tried Dandelion tea?
Not a fan of dandelion, for some reason it makes me feel nauseous (it's a detoxing thing for your liver and I think mine's a bit overloaded LOL).
Hmm, might give the rooibos a try at some point, I didn't know it was designed to ahve with milk, I thought it was like a herbal.
Actual tea and coffee are out at that time of night (although I have resorted to decaf tea on occasion).
Crazylady, I'm glad you said that too, I've been wondering if it was my imagination. We first noticed when DD2 (who is three) was going crazy at bedtime, one night I said, right that's it no more Milo and she's been going down to sleep no probs since. I don't recall it being a problem until recently.
I had activite last night (in warm milk) then went to bed and slept soundly for 9+ hours (didn't even hear DH and the kids get up :o.
roseleaf tea, green jasmine tea and peppermint tea are all nice :)
For those who loke Chai latte did you know you can get it in syrup form. DD2 got some for Christmas and said it is nice. She loves Chai latte but only certain brands and hates the one with vanilla
Interesting about the milo as I don't have mine very strong and have found it sweet when DH makes it like his.
if we're talking teas i LOVE spearmint and i also LOVE liquorice mmmmmm need some now.
Hot milk & honey works a treat. My kids love it when they can't sleep and it works wonders. It's been proven too.
How much honey do you put in?
It doesn't really matter. I normally do a few squeezes and then stir and taste. I nuke it but you can heat in a pan if you need to. It's really to taste.
totally to taste. me? i like about a teaspoon to a mug, but i am a sweet kinda gal...then i NUKE it lol (1 min)
