Overlocker from ALDI?

Aldi are selling this week an Overlocker for $199. Lumina brand. I know this is fairly cheap for an overlocker. I am looking to buy one as I don't have one and it would be my first one. I don't sew alot but now and then when I make a skirt or something I'd love to finish it off neatly and get that great look. I've only ever had a sewing machine.

Does anyone know much about this or heard reviews? Did some googling, found out that Janome supply the parts to Aldi and Aldi put this machine together..... (like lots of their electrical goods). Just wondering, would it then be hard to find parts for this machine if I needed them?

Warranty is only 1yr too?

Any advice? Would I be best off saving my $ for a better machine and paying double at a spotlight sale or something?

Me too!! I saw it and thought $199 is a great price for an overlocker... Whether it would be any good is another thing!

I figure those appliances are too good to be true (based on no evidence whatsoever LOL), but you can pick up pretty good second hand overlockers for that price in trading post or ebay. I just bought a second hand elna sewing machine for $40, and it's brilliant :)

I don't know, everything I have bought from aldi has always been tops. They usually come with a 30 day money back guarantee too!

I've always found Aldi stuff to be really good quality.

Don't know about the overlocker ( but did see it) but I too have also found their appliances to be of top quality! I bought one of the vacuum cleaners they have advertised at the moment ($99!!) and it is AMAZING!! My carpet has never felt cleaner!
I was going to hold out for a dyson, but this vac is just fantastic!

My folks buy Aldi stuff and every single one of them has broken down within a short time. Don't know why they keep going back.

I asked my cousin about them the other day. He works as a store manager for Aldi and said that he hasn't seen many returns for them.

I have the same one and got it last year and it's fab! Mum used to be a professional seamstress and she thinks it is great as well! It is sturdy strong easy to use! Can't go wrong!!! Good luck with it!!!!

Thanks Tan! And it seems like it won't take up as much room on my sewing table as other overlockers might..... seems like a good size! Off to Aldi this morning :)

OK I went out and bought one today but have no time this weekend to play! I am very keen to hear what others think of their new purchase!!! It looks to me to be identical to the Janome overlocker worth $799. Am stoked and so excited - can't wait to try it out!

Every single electrical item (including a sewing machine) I have bought from Aldi I have taken back.

I love ALdi, but avoid the electrical items.

On a side note.
RAVEN - Ask for me when they will build an ALdi in Cairns?

I was told by staff at Aldi that they have sold heaps of these overlockers and hardly ever had any returned!!!!

I got one :dance: I also went to my local fabric store to pick up some stuff for a project and spoke to the lady there about overlocker threads and what i need etc and she said her work colleague who was there and I spoke to also, had paid $600 for the Janome overlocker that is almost identical and she could have sworn it was Janome made. She is spewing she paid so much for something that looks the same LOL I told her yep it is....Janome make them for Aldi apparently.

Hipmummy - I'm too tired today but will be opening mine up tomorrow I think - will let you know how it goes!

I just can't justify spending more than that on an overlocker when I wouldn't use it daily like others might.....if I was an expert sewer and used it all the time then yeah I'd pay more for one.....

I think we just never had any luck with electrical stuff from Aldi. Mind you I just went through 4, yes FOUR PVR set top box thingys before we found one that would actually record AND playback etc. That was all goof brands. In the end it was a cheap one from Big W that didn't get returned with in the week.

Well, I'm absolutely loving my new overlocker!! Even DH has used it a few times to fix up his holes in his socks and pants :rofl: (I'm too slow to do it he reckons hehe).....

Mum and I made a dress the other day for DD and it gives a nice finish!!! :dance: anyone else been using their's and stoked with it?? I need to buy more thread.

Do they still sell them? I just bought a Brother sewing maching and having an overlocker would be sooo handy!!

You will find some *may* still have some but its not a "regular" item so you will just have to pop in & see. Maybe ask if they can call any stores your willing to drive to & ask if they have any left. Good luck!

Oh you wonderful ppl talking about this! Just found this thread & I have some questions. Basically I'm thinking of getting one of these, I've just discovered an Aldi near me has 4 left on special ($169 yah) and FIL offered to pick it up for me tomorrow morning. But I have a dopey question. I have never had an overlocker before, and I'm not sure if this will do what I want. Basically I'm a shortie, and I am so sick of having too long trackiedacks/jeans/pj's/you name it! I used to hand sew them or just pay for someone to do work pants, but I can't justify that for stuff I wear aroudn the house and I'm sick of being in too long pants!!
So... I want something that will just hem & edge them "all professional-like". Would I be able to do that on this machine? I do have an ancient sewing machine & used to be able to find my way around sewing/patterns & stuff pretty ok so I reckon I could teach myself. But then I read a review which said it wouldn't "hem overlock" which is kinda what I thought I wanted to do! Can anyone shed some light?

Hey Bel! And overlocked uses 4 threads and basically cuts off a bit of fabric and finishes the edge but if you want to hem something you would need a normal sewing machine as well unless you are happy with a simple overlocked edge. They can do a rolled hem but that isn't really used for normal hems. An overlocked edge looks like the stitching of that long rainbow ring thing I made for school on my FB album if you wanna looksee!

Or would I be better off just getting a sewing machine that works (as opposed to my 30yo husqvarna...)

EDIT: I just went and got me a 10sec edumacation on wikipedia about overlocking... I'm thinking it would still be handy! (ok so maybe I just don't wanna not buy it now... *sniffs* smell that toasty bargainy smell...*sniff sniff*)

If you intend on using an overlocker for a business I wouldn't recommend getting a cheep one. You don't need to get an industrial one BUT a good quality domestic machine will be far better then a cheepy

They are definitely handy if you are doing other sewing as well - I finish off all my edges with mine and do all my joining on it- super easy and a nice neat finish. I know some people just zig zag theirs but I love it.

I know what FJ is saying about the o'l but if you are making do without one at all right now MrsBexie I would think that this would be better than not having one ITMS and it is a really sturdy great machine for the price.

Here's another question then. Some forums I read said that ppl had trouble getting them serviced given they're a re-badge. Has anyone else found that? I'm now toying with checking to see if the sewing machine is there too, but wondering if I'd be saddling myself with two machines that no-one wants to service... :dunno:

OH yeah, it will do the job if its standard use type stuff. I was using my Pfaff for nappies & I have really thrashed it. It still works but I really did over do it. No way a cheep one would still be working I think.

BUT in saying that, more frequent servicing to accommodate the higher use should keep it happy.

As for servicing, I can't see why anyone would turn their nose up, if its just a re-badge its not like they have to source the badge! Try looking int he yellow pages there are a lot of little guys who do them. You don't need to use the larger service places.

Mrs Bexie - I haven't had a chance to try mine out yet (and won't for a few weeks as I'm going away)... but I know Tan has one and she says it's fine, plus I've seen a pic of her work ;) and it looks pretty good to me (or it's just that she's a genius :)).

I reckon definitely give 'em a ring & try it! GL!

My MIL has also lent me her 30 yo Elna (as my 30yo Husqvarna don't work no more). I think I'm almost hoping the Elna won't work, then I could just buy what I want lol!

Genius? Pfft to that but it is a great machine MrsBExie - my mum was a seamstress for years before retiring (she is the genius!) and she was surprised at how great it is and if she gives the nod then it must be good! I just know it does what I want it to do, easy to use and clean and the finish is great! :)

Yay for the Elna Bel - are you going to get inspired and sew other stuff than hems? I bet you do - I know of an easy table cover cubby house if you want!! ;)

Overlockers are pretty hefty in weight but you know what. If you arranged something with Belfie to get one from her local store & post it too you, you would still come out of it with a over locker for no more then $200 I reakon. I would think you would pay no more then $30 in postage.

Mrs Bexie - normally I'd love to try sort something out, but I'm going to Tassie on Tues & I am flat chat until then (that's why FIL picked up my machine for me... cos it's not actually my nearest store). For what it's worth though, it weights 7.8kg. Did the Aldi guy say if they could transfer it up there?
