How do you cut up onions? Can't stop crying!

Its gotten worse and worse and its nearly ridiculous now.
DP, for some reason that staggers me, bought a massive bag of onions "because it was cheap". We don't use onions that much and its about 5kg of the suckers.

So, as I've done plenty of times before, I'll dice them up and freeze them. So they don't go to waste. Otherwise they'll sit in the pantry and turn into a horrible soup-like monster.

I only got through one and I was bawling. I did another one and couldn't even open my eyes.

What sure-fire tricks can I use to cut these onions up?
I tried eating a piece of Extra, but it didn't help at all.

A friend suggested putting a piece of bread in your mouth hanging out I presume???? Have never tried but she is a chef and said it works? Good luck x

Soak in a sinkfull of water (once peeled, before chopping) for a bit. Apparently that's what my Nanna used to do. But I've nevr done it so can't vouch for it.

Put them in the fridge for a bit before you cut them! I haven't tried it but apparantly it works - also breathing through your mouth, and using super sharp knives so you can get it done as quickly as possible is what I do ! :rofl:!

Thefridge works :) that's where mine go as soon as they come home from the grocery shop!

Goggles?

I've cut onions straight from the fridge and it's been just as bad as straight out of the pantry!

but WOAH stuff chopping 5kgs!

Did you know you can buy onion goggles and have been told they work. I have a friend who swears by them

I mainly use my tupperware chopper these days

i heard that the 'onion juice' that makes your eyes sting is attracted to the moisture in your eyes so putting a glass of water next to the onions or sticking your tongue out attracts the stingy stuff else where.

OR get DH to chop them....especially as her bought them!!!

i cut mine in half and run it under water works everytime for me but run it under the water for a while (not just a quick swipe under)

Choices are A get DH to do it as he bought them!!

I love my tupperware happy chopper.

After you've got them from the fridge....
Cut the top and bottom off, peel them, then cut them in half vertically (with me so far??? LOL)
Then cut your vertical slices, and dice from there.

Hope this makes sense??? It's how I do it and I never cry anymore.
Leeks on the other hand make me BAWL :)

I've noticed that some onions are more teary than others. I don't know why. I just try and do it as quick as I can with a really sharp knife. I've heard the running them under water helps.

I'm a shocker for the tears when chopping onions - I run them under cold water once I've peeled it and then chop them while breathing in through my mouth. Only thing that works for me.

Agree - first option would be to get DH to do it!!

I've tried the fridge... hasn't worked for me.. the theory with that I think is that there is less vapour from the onion if it's cold.

For that many onions I would get out my v-slicer thing. Or if you have a chopper blade thingy for a food processor (magic bullet comes to mind! hahahha) then use that. No way would I stand there manually chopping 5kg of onions. ugh.

My trick that works every time is to not breathe through my nose. If you kind of shut off your nasal passage and just breathe through your mouth, the vapours bypass the nerves near your tear ducts. If I get distracted by something and start breathing through my nose I instantly get tears!

I have really dark brown eyes and they are super sensitive to anything oniony. I can't even cut chives without crying lol! My blue eyed DH on the other hand has no issue with the juiciest of brown onions!

My advice...get a slap chop!!

I have a happy chopper from Tupperware, it's fantastic and the only way I chop an onion :) You put it in this container that has a blade in it, put the lid on and turn the lid and it dices up the onion perfectly.

I breathe through my mouth, I leave the roots on and cut from the top and I take regular breaks and wash my hands regularly too.

I second the breath through your mouth and not your nose. It works for me. The second i forget and breath through my nose my eyes are stinging.

I have the happy chopper too, it's awesome!!! I tend to use diced onions over sliced a lot more, just to stop the tears :shhh: :lol: :lol:

Cut them in half then rinse them and the knife.

The acid in the onions is what makes your eyes water, it comes from breaking the cell membranes of the onion.

The bread in the mouth works too sometimes, but you chew it, you don't need it hanging out of your mouth ;)

The longer the onions sit, the stronger they will become. Usually those big bags are cheap because they are the ones that haven't sold as quick, so they will be quite strong.

:rofl: I've done it with safety glasses before! It helped a bit I think as long as I looked straight down at them and not an angle! they were sunglasses ones so the sight looked rather amusing to my mother!

Didn't read the replies. But You keep them in the fridge. I do that anyway but its also what the chiefs on ready steady cook say to do lol. I always thought I was just super tough & the onions didn't bother me when I cut them up. But then was watching that one day when they spoke about it. But Im still tough.

I find if they have been in the fridge for awhile it helps.

But I also heard that if you chew gum it stops the tears. I haven't tried this one myself, as I only heard this tip recently, but next time the onions are needed I am going to give it a try!

The goggles I was refering to a made especially for cutting up onions, I think they are called onion goggles and can be bought in kitchen shops. If you have swimming goggles they would work just as well

Get a fan and set it up so it blows the onion fumes away from you.
My niece is a great fanner if there isn't an electric one around - just give her a magazine and away she goes. I'd offer to lend her to you but then my sister would have to cut up her onions without her.

I put the cutting board right next to our gas stove with one of the lit burners going (NOT JUST THE GAS or you will poison yourself) and chop away - it works a treat, no tears, no stinging eyes - the flame draws the onion fumes - SERIOUSLY!! I've chopped a kilo of onions this way :D

It's the same theory as lighting a match in your hotel bathroom after #2s if you don't have air freshner while on holidays, the flame sucks away the stink :rofl:

I know it sounds ludicrous, but it works!!

I heard Martha Stewart suggest that you light a candle near where you chopping, because apparently the gas released by the onion will be drawn to the flame. :D

I have an onion chopper - similar to the happy chopper, I think. And use onions from the fridge. With a glass of water in the kitchen. And I have brown eyes (but heterozygous brown/blue... nevertheless, phenotype is brown eyes).

DH has to chop them with me in another room otherwise I look like I have watched 5 weepy movies back to back THEN smeared mascara over my face for good measure. (I do chop the occasional onion.)

If DH brought back 5kg of onions well, let's just say he'd be dealing with them one way or the other. I don't really like eating the buggers let alone having them in the house to chop.

I used to work for tupperware and I am the same, except I have now gotten rid of the happy chopper for the upgraded one (name I cant think of) it is so much easier to use!!! It has a drawstring instead of twist action and yep, no tears!!!

My vote for this would be a food processor and making DH do it - screw chopping 5kg of onions manually!
