opk =hpt????

Hi Guys
i know this has been asked before but i have a couple of questions.

1/ With an opk and the second line, does it only show around o time? or is it always there and just gets darker when oing?

2/ can a opk be used as a hpt? i know this has been asked before but i am just way too tired to locate them here. (the joys of getting up at 5.45am to take nanna around adelaide for app's and only getting home just over an hour ago!)

Naomi, the OPK should only show a second line around O time,,,,,although women with PCOS can show lines all the time (it's their screwy hormones). On the other hand, some girls dont get a second line, even when they are O, or they only get a faint one.
As for using the OPK as a pregnancy test, there are heaps of examples on FF, where people have scanned it for you to soo. It has been done before, but you would get far better results using a HPT I would expect.
I know I probably haven't been THAT much of a help, but it seems that every woman gets varied results and sucess using the opk's. Good luck hun, I hope you get great results from yours :d

ok i'll explain why, im still having all my pg signs, heavy bleeding only lasted a day and its just back to red/brown real small amounts! there have been no clots, i dont have any hpts left so i used an opk and there was a second line, ive now had that twice!
I know the chances of me being pg is very very small if at all, but i thought i would just querie it anyway.

OPK's can always show a faint line as there is always LH in the system. Some women will get a line that gets gradually darker leading up to O and some will get nothing at all (or a faint line) until suddenly it is positive.

OPK's can be used as a HPT but the line should only be considered + if it is really quite dark. A lighter one could be + but as there could be a line anyway it is not reliable.

I used a OPK a week after the Dr said congirmed my pregnancy and that came up with a second line in fact it came up before the first line.

I've had faint lines on the run up to O and teh a couple of days after the dark line.

Have you done a OPK today ?
Eta i just re read your post. I would go and get a BT done to be sure what is going on and maybe also get a HPT. After what happend with your last lot of BT's could you not see a different Dr.

I'd say to do a bt or an HPT: when I did a bt my LH was really suppressed, so I'd have had a -ve OPK (but that was a few weeks into my pregnancy, about seven and a half).

You alwasy have LH in your system around ovualtion you get a LH surge, If the line is lighter than the test line it means your not ovulating , when you are ovulating you get a very dark line as dark as the test line, to judge whether you are pregnant or not using an OPK is very tricky as you always have the Lutenizing Hormone in your system. But if it is very dark and you know you have ovulated that could be a good indication of conception, bottom line always back it up with a hpt and HCG blood test

Yes, all humans have LH in their bodies always that is why for a positive opk the line has to be at least as dark as the control.
Howver as others have said many women don't get a true positive and still ovulate (me!).
The reason LH strips turn positive is that they detect hcg as well. It will not matter if you have suppressed lh as Ryn did if you are pregnant an opk will show a second line. However this can't be used as a diagnosis as only a hpt or blood test can. The reason is is because you could be ovulating or have pcos or some other unusual metabolic disorders which cause increased lh.

Having said all of this I always get a second line on my opk before I get a second line on my hpt. I hope you are pregnant. Was the line quite prominent? Have you used lh strips during a cycle before and do you usually get a second line? If the answer is no I really think you should get a Quantatative Serum BHCG done. This will tell you for sure.

I had used these opks (from lullaby!) around o time, i got a second line which was getting darker and darker, then at the 'party' weekend i forgot to test, and come tuesday when i tested again i got no 2nd line, and wed i got no 2nd line not even a faint one!

The 2nd line ive got now is not as dark as the control line but its visable at arms length etc......as you girls wrote, does this mean an instant no?
The reason i had posted this was because i havnt had a 2nd line on an opk unless it was around o time iykwim.

Bleeding??? OMG i cant remember now, if i count it from when i got brown cm its been a wk and a half, if i count it from red and brown 10days, if i count it the day af was a tad heaver (without clotting, she was only like that 1day and is back to being real real light!) 7days!

I think the best thing to do is buy a HPT and see what happens.
I had my normal AF in November and that lasted around 7days and then early December i found out i was pg.

Yes i did another 2 opk's today! addict!! using the test within an hour of the first one.
the first one showed up a second line, but the second one showed up even darker although not as dark as the control line, we have no money for a hpt, although Rick did get some money off his boss today, so prehaps i could buy one tonight and use it tomorrow with FMU before i go to my trial? Or if i got 2 could i use one then, meaning tonight?

Could you get in to see your doctor today and get a BT done ?
I think that is the only way you will know other than the HPT's.

I dont want to do that though until im atleast 70%sure its a possibility, especially after last time, iykwim?
I think i would prefer the hpt and then depending on that result then the bt

Do you think its wise to test tonight? It would be 3wks after I O'd, if i o'd then iykwim, surley though if i was pg then the opk would have shown a dark line like the control line???

Have a look at the FF gallery, it shows quite a few opk"S used to test for PG, and there are heaps where the line is not as dark as the control. Are you temping at all?

What I think you are saying is that you did another opk today and it was darker than yesterday but not quite as dark as the control???

If that is what you are saying then I will go out on a limb and say you are either ovulating or pregnant. In my experience with Lullaby opk's I only get a second line around ovulation or when I am pregnant. The line I get when I am pregnant gets darker over a few days until it becomes as dark or darker than the control.

If you go to a bulk billing clinic you will get your preg test for free. If not try and buy some preg tests and test. Lullaby sell 10miu preg tests for a little over $3 each! However you won't want to be waiting that long to receive them

No im not temping at all. The only thing we do is opk's, we arnt going to get right into TTC til end of this year, meaning charting temps etc

fingers crossed Hun, as I said in the 1-6month thread, if I lived close to you, I would pop a hpt in the post to you, but from way over here in northern NSW, it would take a week to get to you :(.

Deb, yes that is what im saying, even with the two i tested today the 2nd one was darker then the first, but not as dark as the control line. From the experience i have had with them, i dont get a second line til im oing aswell.
O'ing is just going to be hard this month considering i dont know when to start cd1 from iykwim? im either cd 14, 10, or 7! Most people are saying 7. Or whether i should be on cd 37-40 (approx).

Can someone just say yes you are pg or no your not pg? i think i prefer that to the testing and waiting!

Hi naomi.

You really need to do a hpt to be certain because opks can pick up hcgs which may be throwing your results.

What's your Cervical mucus like? If you can do a hpt tonight that would be great....if it is bfn then keep testing because ovulation is just around the corner (earlier than normal) and you wouldn't want to miss it.

I would do the deed, as a darker line in the one day indicates that ovulation is about to occur. I would think if the line got darker during the same day then it is picking up LH and you are about to ovulate - or of course you are pregnant. Only a hpt will tell you.

Taking into account that you gave birth not so long ago and you probably haven't been menstruating for many months??? I would say that it is within the realms of normal. Also taking into account that a positive opk tells you that an lh surge is happening and you will ovulate within 24 hours (generally sometimes a bit longer). So, perhaps you will get a positive opk tomorrow (do another tonight and check if it's getting darker...) and then ovulate the next day and you will be around day 12 - that is fine. It would be lovely to hear though that your darker lines on the opk are hcg however it sounds like it may be picking up LH and ovulation.
Please do a HPT!!!! And don't forget to do the deed tonight just in case!

well if i was pg it should be a much darker 2nd line, i got a faint 2nd line, but im taking is about ovulation! I wish we could dtd! bummer i guess this month is out for me already! Rick is working 13hr shifts today and tomorrow! so we couldnt dtd last night! and tonight will be out to if he has his way! we dtd though monday night, does that help LMAO i will try for it tonight but i doubt it! Bummer hey!!!!
Oh well always next month! and hopefully my body stops playing tricks on me!

Don't rule out this month just yet. Opk Its still a faint second line right? so it has never reached a positive result yet - then you may be just gearing up....some women receive a "fade in" pattern. Ovulation may not actually occur for a few days so don't give up hope just yet.

sorry what i ment was the hpt showed a faint 2nd line, but as i wouldve thought the 2nd line should be way more darker than that if i am pg, so im ruling out pg and making it O time, i believe im either oing or about to i have another hr to wait before i can take another opk test, but im sure i'll either get a + or close enough to.

OMG!!! Which brand of HPT did you use? A second line is a second line!!!!! ***provided it came up within the specified time frame and has colour to it (not greyish).:pray: :pray:

I cant remember the brand......pre something, isnt pregnoisis or pregnow! As Rick is home and doesnt know anything about this, i cant get up and check although i could let you knwo later tonight.
If i was pg i would be close to 6wks, surely that would be enough to give me a real dark line?? it came upp in the time specified and was pink not grey

Naomi you could have implanted late and close to AF coming and that is why the second line is faint and you got AF. I think the best thing to do is get a BT done just to make sure.

I know that there was a problem with one of the brands (ask flowerchild). Do you have a scanner? Maybe you could scan it in for us? or email it to me and i can post it if you don't know how to.

I really do hope that is a positive result for you. You could also call the manufacturers of the test and see if they have reported any false positive results and if so why the result line isn't dark - let them know that you know when you ovualted and that you did have a light period this cycle.

** edited to say, Blood test is definately the way to go to be sure. Don't forget to ask for a quantative reading so they give you your actual hcg levels.

If the line came up pink within the time frame the test has picked up hcg. (barring it not being a bodgy test - but let's think positive girls!!!)
Yep, I have had my problems with false positives and they are heartbreaking. The brand was discover and there was another brand made by the same company. There is a big thrread in here somewhere about it but I can't do the link thing sorry. from memory pregnosis is a 25miu test quite a big flatish one??? Am I right Naomi???
REmember the dye can be a bit funny, I have a friend who got very feint positives until 7 weeks and now has a healthy 14 month old boy!!!

But the brand was unfortunatley Deb - Discover - im not to happy about that now, i had another brand in my head which i wasnt going to get and it seems to be vice versa!!!

I dont know what to do, i dont want to go to Dr's, they scare me into BFN's lol, i want to atleast try with atleast another hpt first and then maybe go to dr's

Not every person using discover gets the 'disappearig line" thing. You will know by ow if it is. I got a positive and went back and there was no line.
It doesn't sound like that is what happened with yu. I have heard people rave about Discover and have only good things to say. There is a whole speel on the nternet somewhere about these tests and there disappearing positives. However if yours still hs that line then I would take it as a positive. Test again this morning. Please letme know!

Or, do you mean that there is no second line on the opk?
Or, do you mean the line on the hpt from yesterday has disappeared?
If you mean the latter I urge you to contact the company - the phone number is on the box. Demand a full refund and they will oblige. This is becoming a joke with the number of false positives with this brand...
