Perth Fertility clinics - any advise?

Hello everyone. My wife & I have been married for nearly 5 years now and have been trying to conceive for nearly 24 months now. A few months back we found out that my sperm is not good enough (oligospermia) so, after the shock, we're trying to figure out which Fertility Clinic to go to (we need an ICSI).
We've been referred to Hollywood Clinic by her gynecologist, and had an appointment with a Doctor and a Scientist which explained the procedure in detail. My overall feel was from good to very good, but my wife is not so sure about it.
We've heard of other clinics such as Concept, Pivet and Fertility North as well.

Anyone care to share their good/bad experiences with fertility clinics around the Perth area?.

I've had 15 of my 16 IVF attempts in Perth the other one was with SIVF.
I have had an appt with HFC Simon Turner but I didn't feel comfortable with him,.
I have had 12 attempts with Pivet, Dr Yovich is a great surgeon but very hard to get to see for IVF and expensive too. But I have had problems with the clinic and decided to change.
I have had 3 attempts with Concept with Dr Graeme Thompson and he is lovely. We ultimately decided with Concept over HFC because the PGD process is undertaken in their labs and not sent over east (as with Pivet).
I have a gf who loves Fertility North.

I think it's important to have a meeting/appt with each clinic, after calling the clinic and finding out which dr to see for your infertility diagnosis. Then determine which clinci and doctor suits you both. The internet sites can be helpful too.

I'll say first up that I've only ever been to Concept. I had 8 cycles with them before finding success but there were many considerations as to why I stayed:

Fertility North was too far away. End of story.

Pivet had Dr Yovich, who was well recommended, but I had not heard good things about the clinic itself. Some say the nurses were not understanding, and given my fragile state at the time, I didn't think I could face that.

Hollywood had a weight restriction. They wouldn't even meet with you if you ha a BMI of over 35 (mine was 35.1) They also would not transfer more than 1 blastocyst.

The grass seemed greener on the other side for a long time, but I soon realised that Concept was able to provide me with all the support I needed, as well as all the medical facilities available. Like Magic, we were going to do PGD on the next cycle when I fell pg. Concept is the only clinic who do it in-house.

I also absolutely wanted to have two embryos transferred each time. Others, like another member here, does not want to risk twins, so is happy with the one blast transfer policy at Hollywood.

In general, each clinic tends to do things that little bit differently, and often you don't know what these little idiosyncracies are until you're already cycling. So the best advice I can give you is to research and make note of what you consider important (for me it was how many embryos to transfer, how supportive the staff were, and whether tests were done in house) and then ask the right questions when you meet the clinic.

I am going through Hollywood FC for my AC trek, it's been a few cycles now.
I am very happy with them, my trek hasn't exactly been easy & I find the nurses/drs to be supportive. My referral dr is Perkins (I haven't met Turner so can't comment)
I also find them proactive in the journey. When it didn't work, we worked out what to do/try next time. I have been successful but m/c.
I do blast transfers, & am happy with only 1 at transfer, I had PGD on my last cycle, I didn't think anything about it being sent east, results were back in 2 days.

I can't comment on the ICSI, as we haven't done it, but do know of a friend who has & she said all went well

As Sushee has said I guess it would be worth looking at other clinics if you know what it is you want/need. For me at the time I didn't really know, I guess I just went with the flow. But even now I think I'll be at HFC as long as it takes....

I have been with Pivet since Feb of this year. I have found them to be great, but cant compare to any of the others. I did make some enquiries about Concept, but from what i understood the doctors work out of their own rooms, whereas at Pivet it is all in the one building which makes life easier.

So far, the nurses and doctors have all been great. We are actually remembered by the staff there when we return for appointments.

We hopefully will be starting our first round of IVF / ICSI this week there, if my body co-operates with us.

Prices at Pivet are high, but, most of it is claimable back from Medicare and from experience you do get a fair amount of it back.

I am new to this board and I am at Hollywood also. We were with Concept for a number of years. But after many ops I was told the only way to access my ovaries for EPU was via Lap. But I was then told Concept doesn't do Laps for EPU anymore so we went to Hollywood.
We are also with Dr Perkins. He was great, got us going straight away. The nurses are wonderful. I had my first cycle with them last month and they managed to get 10 eggs transvaginally (no need for a lap!)although a nurse had to sit on my abdomen to position my ovaries. I had Dr Love do the EPU and he was very nice. Even when I had my EPU the nurses in the recovery room were so great. The first thing I heard was "Dr Love got 10, and you didn't have a lap either). I was so happy they managed to get something I burst into tears. ALl 10 of our eggs fertilised. Although I didn't have an ET done last month(my E2 levels were too high) I am having a FET done this month.
I think that Hollywood is a little more expensive than Concept but to me it's worth it. But ultimately you should go to a clinic you feel comfortable with.

I am new to the forums but with a similar issue as you Aramis7. After over 12 months of TTC we found out that DH has a 0 sperm count (azoospermia). There are immature ones found but no live/dead matured ones, Like he had a vasectimy at the ripe old age of 25.(I strongly doubt any doctor would allow someone that young with no children to do that, but then again I am no doctor so maybe.)

We are off to see DR Mazzucchelli at concept on the 7th August for our initial appointment.

We strongly believe that DH has this condition due to his fond liking for beer and working as a aluminum welder without using a respirator ever (up until 3-4 weeks ago)

Will let you know how we go with that clinic and DR.
We recieved positive vibes from this clinic when we called up with our concerns of never falling pregnant. Having said that though we hadn't thought about going to another clinic so really haven't inquired.

Hope you find yourselves a good clinic that you are both comfortable with.

This process is so very difficult. You (well...I, really) keep deceiving yourself saying "maybe next month....maybe next month", it's like playing lotto really (and unfortunatelly, our chances are pretty much like hitting the powerball). It is so very difficult to come to terms with.

We have not made an appointment yet, but we'll go to Concept to have a look and then decide between Hollywood and Concept.

I have been going to Concept for a little while now and I have found the staff there to be excellent and very conserderate and understanding. I am currently seeing one of the gyneos there, but I am not happy with how things are going, can anyone recommend a good one who is proactive and considers natural methods as well?

We are going to see an IVF specialist at a new clinic called Fertility Specialists of WA. It is on Queenlea drive just off Stirling Hwy. There are 4 doctors there who are from different clinics around Perth but who have now formed this new one. We got into our first appointment straight away with us going on Friday. Will let you know how it goes...

Hi again. The doctors who have formed the new clinic are Dr Love (from Hollywood), Dr Yeap (female doctor, from Bethesda), Dr Aitkins (from Concept) and Dr Hart, who is the director. All these doctors were recommended by my GP who has also conceived with IVF or GIFT I think. Hope this helps.

We have had great responses from Concept with Dr Mazzucchelli. He sent us off to do a few tests to discover if anything could be causing our issues.

I recently went for a HSG and blood test DH went for a Sperm Test and Bloodwork. It seems that he has started producing sperm that are mature now. They found a few in his latest sample so we are now suffering from a low count. DH works as a welder though and didn't use any breathing equiptment and has done so for the past 2 months. We are thinking that this might be the cause of his pick up in sperm count.

Through the HSG we found that I might have a Fibroid Tumor on the top of my uterus that we would not otherwise of known about. I need an ultrasound to confirm though. This could be a reason for non conception as the fertilized egg might be having problems in attatching itself due to the growth.


So all in all we are quite content with Dr Mazz.
His initial appointment is $100 ($70 odd from Medicare) then its $50 for additional appointments for us.
The blood and semen analysis were done for free but the HSG was rather costly which we had done at St John of God Hospital at the SKG labs for $258 with $96.55 returned through medicare.

Mona this new clinic sounds good with the low waiting period. Lord knows we need more specialists. My husband was referred to a male specialist and we need to wait nearly 3 months for him to get an appointment. EEPP!! My specialist was not that bad but it was still about a month to wait.

We had our first appointment. Dr Aitkin is really great. The details of the clinic are as follows incase you are wondering. Fertility Specialists of Western Australia, 9340 6419, Consulting suites, Bethesda Hospital, 25 Queenslea Drive Claremont. He also has a private room at suite 209, St John of God Medical Clinic 9382 9435. He used to work at Concept. I suppose that is just incase your husband doesnt want to wait that long.

The new clinic sounds good, I hope it works for you. We have been trying now for 3 years, the past 1 year with Dr Nichols, but no luck so far, and he is very frustrating to get information from. I have been on clomid and done IUI, but my hormones seem to be all over the place, so I want to go to someone who is proactive and doesn't just say lets see how it goes and doesn't explain what is going on very well. I know it is a lottery and a waiting game, but I think more can be done - very frustrating! I am with Concept at the moment and they seem very good. I have heard that Dr Mazzachelli is meant to be very good, as is Dr Love. I have decided to make an appointment with Dr Graeme Thompson as I have heard also that he is meant to be excellent. I guess in the end they all do the same thing, but it is who you feel comfortable with is what counts??? I am also seeing a Natropath so hopefully both will work together. I am also thinking/looking into acupuncture, has anyone tried this or know of someone good?

I have had one appointment with Dr Mazzucchelli at Concept, and I am unsure if I should look elsewhere. I did not feel that comfortable with him, he seemed a little vague and not very friendly. I guess that sounds stupid, if he has a good reputation then thats the main thing? Can anyone let me know if they, or someone they know have used Dr Mazzucchelli and had success? He mentioned he would only transfer one blastocyst, and if possible I would prefer 2.
Also, can anyone give me a very rough approx out of pocket cost to have IVF at Pivot or Hollywood? I do have the top level of HBF (not sure how much they give back anyway !). Dr Mazzucchelli said the out of pocket expense with him at Concept would be approx $2000. Also do you know if they transfer one or two blastocyst?

I don't want to say anything bad about anyone but I saw Dr Mazzuchelli and to be honest I agree with you. I was unfortunately on the public system and did not have a choice but to see him. I did 1/2 an IVF cycle and he couldn't access my ovaries so that was it. I was told I needed an op to free them up. I had that op and then went back to see Dr Mazzuchelli but this time as a private patient. I was told after the op that the only way to get to my ovaries for EPU was via laparoscopy. Dr Mazzuchelli told me they don't do laps for EPU anymore. He was vague and he wasn't very nice about it. He basically looked out the window when he said he couldn't help us. DH then started getting angry and asked what we can do now?? We want kids!
He then fluffed around and basically fobbed us off to another Dr. I then thought about Pivet but then decided on Hollywood in the end. We had an appointment with Dr Perkins in May, I was on my first IVF cycle in June. They managed to do an EPU transvaginally. I was then told that if the ultrasound tech can see my ovaries with an internal u/s, he can access them. And he did. Dr Mazzuchelli DID an internal u/s and saw my ovaries but then said he couldn't do an EPU. I ahve been with Holltwood since May and I have found them so great. The nurses are awesome and honestly it was the best move I made.

I can tell you what I paid also (out of pocket)
$1600 for the IVF cycle
$655 for the hospital bed (EPU)
$350 for the anaesthetist ( take to medicare for rebate)
$100 for the Dr consult ( that was in may)
$275 for the embryo freezing
$150 for blastocyst

I have a lot of other info on here, if you want I can scan this and email it to you.

I do have to say I know a lot of people do like Dr Mazzuchelli and have had success with him. But if you don't feel comfortable with him I would suggest either seeing another Dr at Concept or going somewhere else. I think that being comfortable with your Dr and the nurses at the clinic helps.

Hi my partner & I are at Fertility North and are doing ICSI and they are so wonderful there. I cannot fault the staff one bit

I was originally to go to Hollywood, but got fed up with appointment stuff-ups before I even got to see the doctor for the first time, it might have just been bad luck, but they rang to re-schedule 3 times, and then forgot to cancel the 2nd attempt - anyway the whole thing made me lose faith, whether that was a fair judgement or not; so I moved on to Pivet - no problems with appointments so far with them, and haven't had a problem with the doctors, the nurses are very nice, except one who is particularly vague (gave me the booster injections without the mixing needle, the other nurse realised and corrected later thankfully otherwise I would have been in trouble!)

We are with Concept at the moment and while they seem fine, I dont know how I feel about my Dr. I was a few minutes late for an appt and he just walked out, no phone call etc. This makes me a little unsure of what to expect next time. I couldnt get in for another appt with him for 6 weeks so i just left it and am seeing my GP who used to work in a fertility clinic & hope she can answer my questions. I was thinking about other clinics and have heard good things about FSWA - what are your thoughts? Also, are they significantly more expensive than the other clinics?

star gazer - I am currently at FSWA and really like all of the staff there.

Although they haven't yet achieved the results that we want, it is a really friendly environment. They aren't cheap though (I have curent cost sheets, PM me if you like) and they are only a couple of years old so they haven't got a huge set-up.

I also went to Concept and the clinic was lovely and so was my FS. There are many consulting specialists who work out of Concept so if you're having issues with your FS, you can change dr without changing clinics. Who's your current FS?

My FS is Dr Thompson. I dont like to say anything negative about ppl, and realise that we all have personalities that we click with or dont, but i was rather put off by the walk out. Other drs/ppl in allied health have said he can be difficult so i guess i bore the brunt of it this time! I think i will do my next cycle and see how he is with me at pick up/transfer. If i still feel uncomfortable, will look on. I didnt know if Drs would take on a patient from a peer at their clinic - ie to avoid "office politics" emerging. What do you think?

I think it's fair to expect that, sometimes, a relationship between Dr and patient just doesn't work, and I suspect they would rather you changed Drs than clinics, IYKWIM. :) I know of at least two women who changed Drs within Concept.

Often when we're going in for the first time, we choose the Dr who is closest to home or can get us in the earliest - not the best way to pick a Dr! If you're lucky you get someone you gel with and all is good, but sometimes you get someone who just doesn't work out. You are paying for the service, by all means don't be afraid to shop around for someone you can connect with. And personally if your current FS ever bothers to ask you why you switched, I'd be honest with him just so he knows for next time. ;)

BTW as an on-going patient, we've never waited more than 2 weeks to see my FS, so if you're having to wait 6 weeks between appts, I'd switch too if I were you.

Thanks Sushee, you put it so well that it seems quite a reasonable step to take. I will speak to a coordinator at the clinic and see if she can make any recommendations on how to go about it. I had just thought that the clinics are so busy that it made sense that the FS' rooms would be equally overbooked and like everything - you just have to wait! 2 weeks sounds great by comparison :)

Not sure if i have responded directly to you, but i am at Concept. Im having difficulty getting in to see my FS and spoke to my GP about this. She suggested another FS perhaps - Dr Yeap at FSWA - where you said you were. How do you find it there? What time do they open for blood tests? Do they allow you to pay the gap or do you have to pay in full up front? Sorry - so many questions! Could you send me the fee schedule for FSWA - Im hoping they arent significantly more expensive than Concept as we are building at the moment, am off on a short break on tuesday and everything is adding up to be a bit of a financial drain at the moment!

I'm not sure what you mean by 'mistakes' but I've never really had any issues with Concept and my FS (though my FS doesn't consult for Concept anymore, I understand). Concept was professional and wel-organised and I was more than happy with their service.

I guess it all depends of why your current clinic isn't meeting your expectations in the first place. Would another clinic meet those expectations? It's hard to say without knowing exactly what went wrong in the first place.

Though ultimately, I don't think switching clinics because you're unhappy with your current one is unreasonable.

I go though Hollywood and they only put one back as well but I have a friend who went through Concept and they put back 2.

I had a HSG prior to starting IVF. Personally I found it a bit painful but both of my tubes are blocked so each time the Dr tried to push the dye through it was painful. As soon as he stopped trying to push the dye through the pressure stopped the feeling completely stopped so it is isn't like it is an ongoing pain. I assume if there were no troubles with blocked tubes the HSG wouldn't be a problem. Definately take some pain relief (I used nurofen) prior to HSG.
Anyone else with experience??

Thankyou very much for your help I have had no problems with my tubes so hopefully i will be ok , and i will try concept thankyou so much.. :)

I've just had my first appointment with Dr Thompson out of Concept, and I found him fantastic. He answered all my questions wihtout hesitation. I have a weight problem and was concerned he would turn me away because of this. But he is willing to proceed regardless, and Concept does not have a weight restriction. Dr Thompson is also looking further into whether there is a medical reason for my weight issues - to try and fix that also!

I've also been in contact with the Concept people, and one particular doctor, Dr Burton is wonderful. He is helping me with me fertility weight los program, at no cost, and is abolutely fantastic.

So, so far we have had no problems or issues with Concept and have found them fantastic. We are beginning our ICSI in lat Oct/early Nov. Can't wait!

We were blessed with a BFP after our fourth attempt & our daughter was born Sept 08. I have now gone back but due to Dr Perkins wait list got in to see Dr Barton. I have also found her great & all the nurses there are very supportive & professional.

The only negative with Hollywood is they work on a roster system for w/end work. When we went in recently for our FET it was not my FS doing the procedure & I had an AWFUL experience with the FS on duty. I have an appt next month again with Dr Barton to address this.

Also, another positive for Hollywood they have introduced a new procedure for freezing leftover embryos which I'm not sure if other clinics are doing yet. The success rate for FET has apparently increased since this new freezing technique was introduced. Anything that bumps up our chance is great!!

Re the question brought up on switching fertility clinic, it did cross my mind on many a times and my concern would be:

- will our test results be transferrable to the new clinic upon our request? I mean, do we have this right to request that our current clinic transfer all findings and results to the new clinic?

I went with the current clinic as it was a referral made by the GP that I saw in Jan 2009. Went into this whole IVF thing with not much of a knowledge especially when both my DH and myself were still new to Oz (note: we had only been relocated here last December). Both my tubes were found to be blocked in the Hycosy procedure and with both of myself and my DH being in our early 40s, we just went with the flow of doing the IVF without wasting much time in seeking a 2nd opinion. I know it is too soon to call it quit with the current clinic but I have not been comfy with the 2 FS that I had seen so far. Even if I had been comfy with any of the FS, I will never have the previlege of having him/her performed any procedures that I will need as the clinic's policy is that it will be done by any FS that is on duty on my scheduled day of surgery/procedure.

My blastocyst transfer was actually performed by a FS whom we had met in Jan as an understudy FS during our first consultation session with another FS in the clinic. Not doubting this 'newly trained FS' experience and skill, but .......

Anyway, I'll appreciate if anyone could share their experience of switching clinic.

I think that whether a clinic will use 1 or 2 embryos is more of a case by case decision. At Hollywood, I have had 2 embryos transferred on a couple of occasions. I am over 35 now, and I have had plenty of test and treatments. Dr Perkins prefers only one at a time, but the head dr (Turner) says I should use 2 at a time.
I had an HSG and didn't find it particulary painful (no blockage); I think I went shopping for the afternoon with a friend afterward. But I have read a lot of womens posts that have found it really painful.

I was supposed to be starting my next fresh cycle with Dr Perkins and Hollywood on 3 July but there was a major miscommunication (again). I was to be doing PGS this time. He says he told the clinic, they say he didn't. End result, they say I wasn't booked in to July cycle, so I can't do IVF til Sept. VERY upset about this for emotional, medical and financial reasons.
I have not found "all the nurses there are very supportive & professional." Quite the opposite at times. I really like Wendy (scans) and my embryologist tho.
Who was the FS that you had the bad experience with? One time I had Lincoln Brett and the transfer was soooo incredibly painful!!! The next time it was Dr Barton, I told her of the time before and with her, I didn't feel a thing.
I believe all the clinics use the vitrification freezing now - FSWA and Concept do for sure. That said, one of my embryos (done with that new technique) at Hollywood did not thaw properly.

Oh, I missed your message because i logged on before you posted, but then had to go out and only finished my reponse later, so it didn't show the 3rd page.

Yes, definately you can have all your records transferred to another clinic. You just have to sign a waiver. I had mine sent over from a Queensland clinic. And a nurse at Concept said (when I inquired last Dec.) that ladies transfer between clinics quite a bit. I was wondering about frozen embryos and she said they can get transferred no problem.

Which clinic are you at and what doctors have you seen? Am wanting to gather as much info as I can to decide whether to switch clinics or 'stay with the devil I know.'

Where are you from originally? I am also not originally from here.

I am 36 going on 37 and my husband and i would like 2 have 2 put in we are going to pursue it more with our Dr , try and get him 2 do it , and thanks for the info on HSG.
