We're going to start off with disposables and I am so out of touch with them these days. I used Huggies with my two - was the only one that would last and not give them nappy rash, but I have heard a few people lately say that Huggies have been giving their bubbas rashes and the Aldi ones aren't like they used to be either... so I am lost with what to buy, really need to start buying things but don't want to waste time and money on crappy nappies (pardon the pun!).
I use the ones from coles. Can't remember the brand but they are in a white packet. We've used these for ages and have never had a problem.
I also really like the ones from babies r us. Cheap but really good even for o'night.
From what i uderstand, huggies are now importing from china, not made in aus.
I personally haven't had any problems with huggies and still think they're the best but we've also tried the kmart ones that are $19 a box which with twins babies is great! But they started leaving through at night as they got older...were ok in the day but sleeping through 12hrs just wasn't working so we've gone back to huggies
I was adament that huggies were best when DD1 was little but she was in Aldi nappies by the time DD2 came along and we've never gone back.
The aldi newborn were perfectly fine as far as i was concerned, never leaked (aside from the occasional MASSIVE overflow, but i also got that with huggies).
Aldi or Kmart... works best for us.
I still love huggies have not had issues with leakage etc. Aldi I used sometimes with DS1 no issues, DS2 times I have used they have leaked.
Snugglers and Baby love never worked for my kids.
Safeway select and Coles brand (have gum nuts baby on them) have been good.
But I do tend to buy huggies as found to be great!
I have never had a problem with Huggies. Have used them for both my kids, and for over 7 years at work. Never had them cause a rash on any baby I have looked after.
Huggies all the way here :) Never have had a problem with them! Miss H NEVER got nappy rash EVER, until I tried her in a Pamper nappy...whamo! her lil girly bits flared right up!
We also tried the Aldi ones, as we were told how awesome they are....well, I couldn't get past the smell they have...BEFORE they go on bubs! I did try one on Miss H and again, she flared straight up in a rash..

My experience with huggies were they arent good for bubbas with chicken legs, my DD always leaked so we used the aldi newborns which we found great plus really cheap. Then we went with babylove (before the dry wave design) and they were good for a while then she started getting nappy rashes so we went between huggies/coles branded and aldi.
I now only use babylove as the new dry wave design is great shes not had a single nappy rash it hold a lot of liquid specially since my DD loves her drinks.
For the new baby i have a pack of huggies, aldi and woolies select to try and see what works for us.
Can I be not very helpful & say it depends on the shape of your bub?? I have found different nappies have worked better or worse for my differently-shaped boys.
DS1 leaked terribly in Huggies (both newborn and larger sizes), but was great in Babylove or ALDI. For DS2, I preferred the Babylove newborn (with the poo-pocket thing at the back) to the Huggies newborn, but I honestly didn't find the sposies contained the newborn poo as well as cloth does. Once DS2 was older, we had problems with Babylove, but found Huggies are fine, as are the Coles Comfy Bots (they are the white packet ones that Sunshine mentioned) - they are really cheap & work quite well (comparably with Huggies).
Ive heard a few people say aldi are better for boys :dunno: ds has used them since he was about 4 weeks old & we've been really happy with. I wasnt as keen with them for dd - bit of poo leakage (& she definitely doesnt have chicken legs :lol:) but they're ok. Huggies have been good so far for dd but not happy with the coles brand. Havent liked babylove on either ds or dd (despite ds wanting to stop & talk to the boxes in the supermarket - they have the wiggles on them).
I think it does depend a bit on the shape of the baby/child

I never like Aldi or coles ones, they leaked and there seemed to be a strong smell.. Apparently the new babylove dri weave ones are just as good as huggies, but I haven't tried them yet.
Baby Love all the way here :D Love the poo poo pouch in the smaller nappies! Only other disposable nappy we have used are Huggies, however my oldest had a terrible reaction last year that looked almost like a chemical burn so haven't used them since. I found they leaked a lot too.
It's a shame you can't just get lots of sample packs so you can try before you settle on one sort! I know with dd we bought a box of huggies before she was born & then worked our way through a few sorts - you go through them so quickly when they're nb

I've been using huggies overnight with DD3 and they've been great. Had some pooplosions when she was in the newborn size but hey, nothing was going to keep that amount of goo in!!
Huggies here for overnight and the first month or so till he fit into the mcn I have. He has chicken legs and skinny waist!! Whatever you decided to buy just buy a small amount of until you meet bubs and see what size, shape you need :-) I find baby love and aldi not as absorbent as Huggies!
We started out on Hugues, because we were given to massive boxes, but found that DD would have poop.explosions alot of the time.. And then we tried KMart brand which were good, until she started leaking at night...
Now we use Babylove and they have been the best. But I also think it depends on your bubba :)

We use costco (kirkland) branded nappies during the day and huggies overnight. We have never had a leak with either child in any nappy so I just thought that people have the wrong size nappies on their bubs. (DD is 9kg but in 10-16kg nappies, not 6-11, for eg).
Comfy bots from Coles (with the gumnut babies) is what we used for most of the last 12m of DS in nappies as they were consistently cheapest.

I've only ever used Huggies with both my girls and love them. Neither have had rashes from the nappies. DD2 is almost 7 months and hasn't had any sign of nappy rash at all. I use a barrier cream (Sudocream) with every change though so that would help.
We use naty babycare from Coles or woollies.......no nasty chemicals and no leaks :-)
When we use disposable, we use Aldi. Yes, they went through a redesign a year or two ago, but more recently had a newer redesign and I am really happy with them. Why pay more?
Huggies here too. DD is now 3 and only recently begun TT, and they're still holding everything in overnight.
Even when she was in plaster - she was in a spica cast and we had to cut the sides and tabs off a newborn nappy, making it sort of like a pad. That slid into a slot in the spica, and then a bigger nappy went around the cast holding it all in - even with that set up, we had very few leaks into the plaster, the Huggies absorbed most of it.
Aldi all the way here. Boys and girls night and day. Never had a problem. I had to start with the Huggies Newborn as at the time Aldi newborn were still too big, then I switched over to Aldi a few weeks in. Aldi now are supposed to have a true to size new born.
Otherwise check out cloth.
When the twins were newborn we started with Huggies but as they had little chicken legs we were always getting leakage, so I swapped to babylove newborn as they are smaller in size than the huggies ones and worked a treat. Once they got some meat on their legs I then used up all the huggies ones :).
They are 14mths now and I use "pampers' during the day - I buy them online from deals direct (they also sell newborn size) and they are fantastic although at night I do put them into either huggies or aldi brand as they sleep on average 14-15hrs overnight and I need the extra absorbancy, but considering a newborn is changed every few hours I would give the pampers a go as well.
Good idea! I just checked a few websites (Babylove, Snugglers, Huggies) & they do offer some samples - I couldn't find newborn ones on the Huggies website (only swimmers and dry nights), but Babylove and Snugglers both offer samples of nappies.:
We use Huggies at night... little man feeds all night so is always full of wee. Huggies seems to be the only brand that can contain the bucketloads! We always get the size up for over night and very rarely wets through. Through the day, just use the Coles brand ones just to save a bit of money.
Has anyone suggested an of the Eco nappies???? Natracare at Coles. Seventh Generation Online, Growing Up Green online, Moltex online and Bambo Nature also online. THese nappies have less plastic in them, better for the temperature on babies bum. They have less chemicals and are not bleached. The an*s is the most absorbant part of our body so any chemicals put near there you want to be extremely cautious of,from what you have said about vax and homebirth, I would think that you make conscious choices when it comes to health for your child, so paying a little bit extra (which if using huggies there is virtually no difference) and getting something that has less chemicals and is better for the environment. I would also suggest lining the nappies with muslin or a flushable liner to have an extra layer away from the disposable nappy and then you can flush the poo down the loo where is belongs. As far as leaks go, all nappies can leak depending on how they have been put on, and each person has a different view of what a leak actually is to them. I would suggest putting a wool cover over the top, wool absorbs up to 40% of its weight in fluid and it evaporates while the baby is wearing them, over cloth the nappy doesn't get as wet, over disposables it will not add to the heat but regulate the temperature more, and it can wick the leak away from the baby without them feeling wet.
With DS1 I swore by Snugglers. Tried them 15 years on with DS2 and they were a crappy nappy (love the pun btw!). I also used pampers with him but couldn't find them when DS2 was born.
I bought huggies but they were expensive and not as good as they used to be.
I then went with the Coles "gucci" brand - the ones with little snugglepot and cuddlepie on them. Didn't like the fact that they were imported either, but nearly all are. When we moved back East I started buying Aldi ones which were great but then they changed their supplier so I reverted back to Coles.
I gave the whole disposable thing up recently because DS2 is toilet training and is only in nappies for sleeps. I bought myself some AIOs online through ebay (an OS supplier) for $50 delivered - 10 nappies plus 12 inserts. They are fantastic. DS2 is a right little piddler and although the nappies weigh a ton when I take them off him his skin is still dry. I will be buying loads more if/when DS(orD)3 arrives.....
Well i've done very well for myself - saw the Naty Nature Babycare (eco nappies) on special in Coles and decided on trying them after reading a few reviews. The ticket said reduced to clear at $8.69 or something like that so thought I may as well stock up, sounds like they are discontinuing the line in my store. BUT what I realised when I got home was that the price it scanned at was $3.29 - bonus! Massive saving there, so I went back today to get the last 4 packs. That should see me sorted for newborn nappies and happy to be going eco too. Just hope they gel well with my bubs. My back is killing me now, so glad to have that all sorted. Thanks heaps for all your feedback - wise advice for sure. I did send off for samples too so if I get stuck having issues with these nappies (the main issue some seem to have with them are leaks with little/skinny babies which is common in many brands it seems) I can use something else for a bit.

We got heaps of samples from the baby expos. We got through 3 weeks in disposable in samples and left over nappies from friends. We had leaks/overflow in every type and still did in the next size up too. Mcn's seem to be the only thing that will contain the ridiculously huge amount my little man wets. They were eBay cheapies but have saved us a fortune and it's no extra water as we would otherwise be changing DS at every nappy change (which is alot in a 1 month old).

We love naty babycare. With my older son we had some leaks in them overnight but they'll be fine with a little one.
We now use Bambo as they're even more compostable and they make big pull-ups which we need for my older son. They are very absorbent, excellent nappies.
If going eco I would avoid Seventh Generation. They are dyed brown!! Talk about green-washing. They are chlorine free but I think that's all that is good about them.
BubbaT, what brand are the eBay cheepy Mcn's that you liked? My sister I law uses a babyland brand that are a copy of baby behinds and loves them.

I have been using huggies, but I was given a pack of little takas Eco nappies. She's just come into the size and they are awesome!! They are so much better than huggies! They seem to have better "poop" stopper liners on the side and they are super absorbent, she stays so dry.
Im finding them awesome too! Its held in some messy things, very impressed. Only problem is I stocked up on the newborn size, and being a big bubba she'll grow out of them before I run out!
I know some supermarkets here will take back unopened packets and swap them for a bigger size without a receipt. Not sure if your supermarket will do the same?
