Hospital Food
Not sure where to put this but here goes.
When anyone has been in hospital what was the food like ??
Do you get your food taken to you ??
This is what it was like when i had Kimberley.
We had to stand in line and get our own.
Breakfast - bread & butter or cereal
Lunch - Hot meal and pudding. Things like Pie, mash and veg.
Tea - Sandwich, chips and yoghurt.
Hot drink before you went to bed.
-
Similar here except food is brought to you.
Pretty bland but certainly edible when you are hungry!!!
-
Food @ lyell mc was crap when I first went there when preg with Kameron but i found out after i got out that the kitchen staff were on strike. The 2nd time i had no complaints. Got a menu and filled in what I wanted to eat over the next few days, could choose from fruits/toasts/cereals etc for breakfast, thru to sandwhiches/hot meals for lunch and tea with icecream for dessert. they also bring tea/coffee twice a day.
All meals were brought in to you. Anywhere around 5pm for tea, and during the supposed quiet time for lunch usually 1-3pm

Michelle - which hospital made you queue up for food?? I hope not the WandC as that's where I'm probably going...
-
Donella - I had Kimberley in the UK so no need for you to worry. But then i don't know what other hospitals are like here.
-
I had Jayden at Sunshine Hopt in Melb.
We were brought a menu each morning for the following day.
Breakfast was cereal or toast
Lunch was sandwiches or a hot meal.
Dinner was a hot meal with a dessert.
We could get tea/coffee/milo or a cold drink from a kitchen that was provided for patients. The kitchen also had toasters (bread & spreads were provided as well) & microwaves.
-
Gee that is rough for a hospital to make women who have just given birth queue for meals!
My hospital food was a bit like aeroplane meals.....not very exciting, but still I loved the ritual of selecting from the menu and having the food delivered and eating it in bed.
-
I loved the hospital breaskfasts! We were given cereal, hot bread rolls, yogurt and fresh cut melon........it was a feast!
The other meals were a bit ordinary, so often I opted for the sandwhich choice.
I know that some hospitals encourage new Mums to go and get their own food and to sit down with other Mums......I think my SIL told me she did this at Royal Randwick, and the Mums just wheeled the babies in with them.
Michelle, Andrew bought me snacks in as well.....fruit and nuts and cereal bars etc. This was useful if I got the midnight munchies and also becasue sometimes they bought me food and I was dealing with Olivia and didn't have time to eat it/didn't fancy it, but I could snack later on when it was more convenient, IYKWIM?
There was also a tea room to make our own teas and coffees with great big tins of biscuits and I know a lot of hte Mums raided the bicky barrel in the wee small hours!
-
Actually in the mother-baby unit we were encouraged to collect our own meals and go eat with the others...that was kind of nice for the company, but sometimes hard to drag yourself out of the bedroom when you feel depressed....
-
I like the idea of being able to pick what you want to eat.
DH did bring me in lots of snacks and drink.
Also he was able to bring in take away.
One day when my sister came she even brought me in food as she saw what they were feeding me.
-
We got given a menu every day to fill out what we wanted for the next day.
Breakfast was pretty crap, bread, butter, jam, vegemite and a cup of juice.
Lunch was nice, usually something hot. Lasagne(sp) some sort of chicken casseroll(that was beautiful) and some fruit.
Dinner was nice too. Pretty much same as lunch really.
-
i ahd joshua in england too, butt!!! although we didnt have to que up for it, it was brought to us and we got to pick what we wanted froma menu the night before it was given to you, it was all disgusting no matter what u had.. i made my ex sneak me buger king! lol
iam hoping its better here as when ive been in hospital for other things its been ok here in australia.. so i hope i get yummy food, if not ill be asking to be sneaked other food lol
take care

I wonder if they provide food for the hubbies too? I guess that varies from hospital to hospital.
I know that we have been encouraged to bring in lots of snacks and yummy things so I will probably get Neil to bring me in some decent food if I find it to be way too bland at the hospital. Still, I am not a fussy eater at all so I will probably be happy with what I am given. The only thing i won't eat is banana but I am sure Neil will help me out with that one ;)
-
The hospitals in the UK some still have wards so you shared and area with 5 - 7 other women so they did not worry about you eating on your own.
I'm not a fussy eater. But after the first few times in hospital before i had Kimberley i knew what the food would be like so my labour baby already had yummy stuff in it. They never had a problem with you bringing take away in.
One thing i will have to check out before i have this baby that they are okay with it.
-
I was given a menu each day for the following days meals probably a choice of 3 or 4 different thungs..
Brekky was cereal, toast, fruit & cup of tea or juice...
Lunch was a hot meal or sandwich platter which I usually opted for coz sanga's taste awesome when someone else makes them!!! fruit juice, youghurt etc..
Dinner was various hot meals & desserts... Not too badm as i was in room #1 but it was never raosting, piping hot the way I love my food!
-
I love hospital food. I have only been in hospital due to injury and not given birth there yet but I would think it would be the same or similar food.
There is always a menu and lots of choices in the private hospitals I have been in.
-
I liked my hospistal food!! And it sure beats cooking and cleaning up. I chose my food from a vegetarian menu, which was a bonus! Only prob I had was that they would come to collect my tray too soon (not that they took it if I hadn't eaten, it was just annoying). When you have a new bub you only eat when it suits the baby, not when it suits the tray lady!
Can't remember exactly what I had but, I could choose from cereals, eggs, toast, or a combination of these for breaky, I think lunch was sangas or something like that... than a hot dinner....can't really remember.

I wasn't allowed out of bed, except for going to the bathroom, so there was no queueing for me! Everything was brought. We had a menu, the day before, that we could choose from.
Breaky was cereal, toast, coffee, muffins, fruit
Morning tea was coffee/tea and biscuits
Lunch was hot meal, (variable), or sandwiches, with juice.
Afternoon tea was coffee/tea and biscuits.
Dinner was hot meal (variable), with dessert, fruit, jelly or icecream.
It got a bit sickening after five weeks, though!

I have to say that I love hospital food, well, I have everytime I have been in hospital.
A tip that I was told was to order extra for your evening meal so that DH can share, that way you dont have to pay the extra for a meal for him as well.
The meals I had when I had the girls were beautiful and yummy and you could write exactly what you felt like on your form and they would bring it the next day. Brilliant when you crave seafood. But then again that was a private hospital.
Michelle, I know that you are going public. One thing to remember is that when you fill out your menu, dont go for anything that sounds fancy. I used to work in a hospital kitchen and anything that sounds fancy such as chicken casserole, or some kind of meat with a fancy name after it, is really just the left over roast and vegies from the day before. Not the most tasty of meals believe me.
I have never had a problem with the meals.
-
The hospital food wasn't that bad, though I think the breakfast could have been better (instead of the piece of dry toast etc).
I think whenever I dont have to cook, I appreciate it quite a bit more!
I have been in hospital many times before and had the menu system, however they forgot to give me the menu/checkbox card when I was in there with Aidyn, so I got what was left over... bugga! #-o
-
I was impressed with the fantastic hospital food for my 8 month old during my stay in the mother-baby unit; freshly prepared pureed meats and veges, baked custard, fresh and pureed fruits, yoghurts - he gobbled them all as if they were delicious!
-
hehehehehe... This all reminds me of when my little sis was born (I was in Kinder) and Mum let me steal a whole bunch of those little Vegemites and Jams and Sugar packets hahaha... I had the biggest stash. I remember taking them to school and handing them out to everyone LOL...
-
i quite like hospital food too.
i know at the Angliss you get the menu the night before to choose your next day meals, and it normally consists of;
breakfast - toast with spreads or fruit
lunch - soup, sandwiches or salad or hot meal
dinner - soup, sandwiches or salad or hot meal
from memory i think you get dessert with lunch and dinner and could be custard, jelly or ice cream.
the hot meals are yum, things like pasta bakes, casseroles, pies or pastas

I went and did a tour on tuesday at our chosen hospital, Freemasons private in Melbourne. The midwife doing the tour raved about the food, and I did see some trolleys going past with some good stuff on it, including wine! I am realy pleased with the fact the kitchen is right there on the same floor, and all meals are made fresh to order. I know one other person who has given birth there and she confirmed the food is great. I think I may need to stay for a while....
-
Our food was pretty ordinary, and I never wanted to eat when it got there. But for breaky there was a common kitchen that was stocked with brekky all day, so fruit, fruit juice, cereals, toast & anything you could want on top of toast, yogurt. And then the other meals were brought to your room. Coffee & tea were in the common room as well. We brought in heaps of frozen lasagne's that I'd made for fall back on yuck food & we also ordered a pizza one day :) drove the midwives crazy with hunger, so the next day we ordered them one too :)
-
Just thought I would bump this to see what you girls who gave birth recently were given, am interested to see what I'll be in for.
-
i love hospital food - although i love airline food to lol.
i was in a private hospital and was also given a menu to choose for the next day usually with 3 or 4 different choices. breakfast was the usual cereal, toast or a hot meal (ie bacon and eggs etc)
lunch and dinner both consited of a few choices of hot meals and deserts, also with lunch and dinner there was also a choice of plates of sandwiches.
i ordered sandwiches at every lunch and dinner and kept them in the little fridge in my room for visitors or if i was hungry at any other time of day or night.
oh i also ordered red wine every night and it came in a little bottle consisting of around 2 glasses of wine (i wouldn't drink it every night) so i bought quite a few bottles home and they came in handy for cooking lol, or a drink if i was desperate (i am not a big drinker lol)
i also got morning and afternoon tea - usually tea/coffee or soft drink and a little cake. and also supper when they came with tea/coffee or hot chocolate and the yummy cooka's biscuits (like shortbread type bikkie with chocolate and jam)
my only problem was the meals were to small even though i ordered large servings lol.

Hmmmm, can I add my two bits??
I get to eat hospital food everyday (just about except on the odd day off...) and well, not sure whether I hate it, love it or just got used to it!! We basically get the same as the patients in the staff caff. The rule is if it does not smell like it looks, don't eat it!! I have to say though over the past few years, there has been a substantial imporvement in the appearance and variety we get, so can't really complain. When you are hungry..... The only trouble is they serve it all so early, so we often miss out as the caff closes by about 1:30....
The private is where we go when we want something really nice - not sure what sort of meals they have for pts, but they sure look after us in the surgical 'relax' room - they give us real coffee facilities, muffins etc for morning tea, sandwiges for lunch and well, I have always missed dinner...
We are going to the private for the birth so it will be interesting..... might get spoiled....

I was in Cabrini in Melbourne, and the food was like ordering from a room service menu in a good hotel. It was quite a change from what I expected, the catering manager at Cabrini was trained in 5-star hotels (I actually had worked with him a few years previously) and was determined to bring hospital food up to the standards that he had served in classy establishments.
There's a new manager there now, I hope they've kept the same policy when I'm in there this time around!

My friend recenlty had her DD at the Mater Private in Brisbane. She said the meals were great. For breaky you got a hot meal - eggs, bacon, tomato toast etc. Mornng tea - cake or cheesecake, tea/coffe, Lunch - hot meal or sandwiches. Afternoon tea - similar to morning tea. Dinner - selection from about 5 plus wine and desert. Meal for DH's provided (at additional cost). She said she could never finish a meal because they were decent portions. She also had tea/coffee making facilities in her room for visitors and herself and she would often put anything she couldn't eat in the fridge in her room and eat it later or reheat it for DH if he was late getting up there.
She described it like staying in a 5 star hotel!
Can't wait to go there!!

Anyone know what the food is like at Birralee at Box Hill Hospital?
I'm really just expecting it to be standard fare.
