N2L if you continue reading in the new thread, 1200 doesn't work for some. I am part of a 30+(kg to lose) group on FB and there are several that say they tried the 1200 it didn't work for them so they gradually increased to 1300 or 1400 or whenever they found a good balance that seemed to work for them.
The program is very variable - it's supposed to teach good principles about food and choice and portion control etc but you can vary it as much as you want to suit your needs. Obviously as designed they believe it will work the most effectively but there are plenty of people who have success doing what works for them.
Other sites like Myfitnesspal or Calorie King calculate only slightly higher calories (variably between 50 and 80) and I have 50kg to lose. What I don't understand is people that say "eat your snacks and don't dare go under 1200 your body will go into starvation mode" but then how does burning an additional 500-1000 cals on top of that not do the same!!!!
In regards to maintenance an old post from their support cew said most people resume 1400-1500 cals a day and training still 5-6 days per week. At my healthy end goals 1400 is what my BMR would be.
We follow the dinners only and I eat breakfasts and lunches that suit the calorie intake and our budget. Many ideas i have had (like breakfast crumble, apple muesli, pancakes) from the recipe index anyway.
Because Im still bfeeding Im on the higher calorie count, of 1700. So far I have lost over 30kgs doing wbt.
Honestly I donnt really calorie count. I dont eat her brekkies or lunches, mainly because its just me eating them and also Im a creature of habit, I really like my brekky combo. I follow her recipes for dinner though. I dont calorie count because I dont think that it is healthy long term. Instead, by following the program I have realised that my protion sizes were huge, that I was a massive emotional eater (and yes I still am, but no where near as much). I do have my snacks and I make sure that I eat through out the day. If I think I have hit my calorie limit and Im still hungry then I will have some fruit, or something healthy.
The program is great, it has a lot of lessons in it that have had a huge impact on me. The weekly videos, the preseason tasks and the lessons are almost important as following the meal and excerise part.
I'm useless with the snacks - I just forget to have them. I get busy at work or at home, or I put them in my bag and *still* forget them, etc.
I often only end up having 1000 calories or whatever, and yeah I'm hungry, but not problematically so.
I was in the first couple of weeks, but I got used to it fast.
Exercise has been a much MUCH bigger problem - I just haven't been getting to the gym. I've been working long hours, and then it's too late for the gym and too dark for it outside, and the kids are too asleep for me to be doing it inside!
That being said, I've had a loss every week.
Thanks everyone :)
I'll give it some more thought.
Good luck to you all in the meantime!
i am curious about the 12WKMB thing, considering doing it, but am curious, i see snippets of the tv show (the biggest loser) which i'm assuming is tied to the 12WKMB, as Michelle Bridges does both - and i'm wondering, some of the humiliating comments/mentality i see on the Biggest Loser, is that also in the 12wkMB program too?
i realise everyone doing the program is very pro-this program, i'm not having a go, just honestly curious. Already feeling very low and deflated about my weight, hoping the 12wk program is positive, not negative (like the tv show seems to be, to the point where i TRY to watch it, and get so upset by what i see, i have to turn it off).
12wbt and BL aren't linked at all. In all the workout videos, Michelle stresses that there's no shame in taking a break when you need to. I find the whole program very supportive and accommodating to all levels of fitness tbh.
^^^yep this ^^^
12wbt is a complete lifestyle and attitude overhaul. For me, the weightloss is an added bonus.
BL, whilst it is also about lifestyle changes etc it is also about tv ratings and 'entertainment'. With the 12wbt Michelle pushes you 'virtually' (online chat, support messages and mindset videos - all of which are done in a supportive, not belittling, way not what's shown on BL!) the actual onus is on you to follow through with the nutrition and excercise plans that she and her team supply you with :)
Gigi - you just go at your own pace. Eg: it's easy enough for me to stick to the meals at least 75% of the time, so I do that. But some weeks I can only really get to the gym 3 times a week, some times it's once ...
We all have busy lives, a while you can make certain decisions and priorities, sometimes life just gets in the way.
You just take it at your own time, at your own pace, and go from there.
:grouphug:
N2L I don't stick to the 1200 calories, I am still breastfeeding so add on an extra 300 or so. Plus I want this to be a lifestyle change and so it needs to be sustainable for me. I figure as long as I move everyday and make more concious decisions about what I am eating, I'm on the right track. I usually have the breakfasts and dinners while organising my own lunch.
I'm a massive emotional eater and am getting better in that regard while learning heaps about why I eat. That's probably the biggest thing I will be taking from the program :)
thanks for all the replies - you have put my mind at ease!
i'm on my own personal countdown to doing the 12wk program. I have made a list of all the things i think i will need to do it, and am gradually marking all those things off. (so far, i have bought a kitchen digital scale to weigh the portions on, a set of scales to weigh me on, next thing is a pair of sneakers to workout in as i don't have any supportive, filled in shoes to wear at all).
i do find all your posts about this program, very inspiring, esp the bits you struggle with, cos that's real life, and you all give each other heaps of great things to try (to get past, whatever is the struggle).
Eeekkkk I signed up this morning and absolutely wetting myself over it. I'm an emotional eater and pretty lazy with my food choices unfortunately. I'm going to focus on the food side and try and manage exercise where I can. Will I really need kitchen scales? I never thought of that before.
Yep RB, definitely get some digital kitchen scales. Especially if exercise is going to be when you can fit it in, the portion sizes are really important. Eventually you won't need to weigh so much, you'll know by sight what 60g of something is etc. I still weigh everything because I want it to be exact.
Can you prepare snacks and lunches the night before? I'd like to so I make sure I eat properly.
I do. If I don't I snack on **** all day or over eat. It's also easier time wise...and I've only got two little ones lol!
Yep, definitely get kitchen scales.
Particularly as a lot of the recipes have "one medium onion 89gm" and then I get one medium onion, and it's 128gms ... weigh everthing!
And yes, a lot of the recipes can be made in advance.
Also, get "MyFitnessPal" or something similar on your phone, because it helps you track calories during the day, and will also help you to figure out if you can eat something with your left over snack calories.
:)
And even if you're focusing on eating right, and exercise is a little bit on the back burner, try to get out at least once a day - even if it's just a walk around the block. Just to get it into your mindset that exercise is something that you do, ITMS :)
So I've decided I'm not going to spend the money this round and allow myself the full 3 -4 months to recover. I am going to follow the meal/ exercise plans in her books as much as I can.
Started this morning with measurements and breakfast - tomato, mushrooms, English spinich and toast. My gosh I'm so full!
Well done! And fair enough, with the pacing of yourself, hun.
All improvements which are sustainable over time are good :)
Ugh. Feel so sick.
Had coffee and a traditional hot cross bun for brekky, and a small serve of fish'n'chips with the extended family for lunch, and the ears of DH's Lindt bunny.
Feel. So. Sick. Can't stomach the thought of any food for dinner.
Busted again today. Had pizza for dinner. Didn't even want it, no idea why I ate it. Probably going to feel sick again tonight.
Tomorrow is a new day. Gonna behave myself now!
I want this. I'm going well with the eating otherwise (crapola with the exercise, just no time for anything, working crazy hours plus personal stuff taking all my waking hours and energy) so I need to stick with the eating.
You can do it peanutter! Think if the next milestone you want to achieve and visualise it when you're deciding what to eat. That is working for me over Easter! Eyes on the next goal!
Thanks, Polly!
I need to get some light hummus and tzaziki and capsicum and celery and carrots etc so when DH gets a dinner together I know I shouldn't be eating, I can snack on something healthy while I make a proper dinner ...
I would never have eaten the pizza yesterday if there was something healthy and tasty available ...
The hot cross bun was intentional - I'd told myself I could have one over Easter, and that's the only one I had. The fish'n'chips wasn't on purpose, I'm pretty sure I'd run past my parents that I'd like the fish to be grilled, and that they were going to have salad there, but I didn't check back in, or bring stuff for myself, so there are things I could have done to have avoided the situation. And at the end of the day, I didn't have to eat it. I made the decision that I'd rather eat a serving rather than getting into why I wasn't, and going hungry until I got home. We have lunch there every Sunday, and I can normally have some roast meat and boiled veggies and just leave the roast potatoes and other veggies in the juices, etc... And I just treat it as my "treat meal" for the week (as there's peas and corn etc, so it normally sits around 550-600 cal).
So that's today! I'm going to have to have an especially small serve today to make up for Friday and Saturday.
I suspect there was a bit of emotional eating going on there too ... Not an excuse. Just an observation.
How's everyone else going?
did a sneak weigh in yesterday before my 2nd SS of the weekend and I'm down 3kgs. NFI if that will still be the same after last night's social outing which was to TGI Fridays complete with ****tails (at least I stayed away from the milky ones, but the fairy floss one was pure sugar).
Seriously contemplating this. Just hard to justify when weigh it up had free meal plans and exercise plans. I do admit I need help with the emotional and motivational side of things. Is 12wbt good in that area? Honestly I am fed up with yoyoing.
Astrid, I yoyoed my entire adult life and most of my teens. I love the 12wbt, the support I feel is really good. Plus, I felt like paying that $200 helped me commit more, as did the preseason and warmup parts, so I wasn't just jumping straight in. I've lost 24kg so far and am 16.2kg below my pre pregnancy weight :) It really has altered my life significantly.
Astrid I am the same( as you know from the chat thread) so sick of the up and down so signing up for the next round because my mental part plus healthy ideas needs help! Especially lunches fur work and snacks.
PZ that's amazing!!!! So good to hear great stories about it!
I needed heaps of enocuragement with the emotional and motivational side too. I had a heap of stuff to sort out in my head, make it time to be about me and etc. wbt helped with that so much. The weekly videos, the preseason tasks and the weekly videos really help you get in the right mindset. Probably the biggest and most helpful part for me was this. I agree with pz that paying the money out put a heap of encouragement to get going and stay going. Now I dont want to waste the money and am determined to make it to my long term goal too
Ok, I 've done it. I have signed up. Just don't tell DH ;)
Now to just work my way around the website.
Hooray!!! I am waiting for my next payday in a fortnight!!!
Good job, ladies :)
Congrats ladies! :)
Ok, a few questions (sorry if they have been asked in the previous thread, it is a lot to trawl through)
Do you need to buy anything? Pedometer, HRM?? Any of her books and DVD's?
Don't want to spend unless I need to. Also don't want to waste Round 2, all because I should have spent a few $$ on something that really helps.
I wont be going to a gym. Will be working out at home. I do have the Wii with EA Active, Zumba and Just Dance (which really does get a sweat up). I have been going to Zumba, but probably need to redirect the money from that to 12WBT payment.
I suppose though I do have some time to save up or find bargains. Was surprised to see it does not kick off till mid May, I want to make the most of the lead up time though!
Somewhere on the site it tells you what need hun will see if I can find it, exercise is broken up into indoor/outdoor/gym and DVDs I think. Then you need hand weights and a few other things that are helpful but not optional. might have been in the faq section.
I'm sure someone doing it will pop in but in the meantime have a search on the info pages.
I think good kitchen scales would be handy as well as weighing in scales.
This round was the first round she introduced videos for the daily workouts, so theoretically you should be fine without the additional purchase of DVD's etc. Helpful if you have a large computer screen or perhaps apple TV. But, it doesn't hurt to change it up a bit or vary it so if you have a bit of money to splash one of the three sets is worth $30, not sure about the newer set (think they are called the project dvd's).
You could buy the books if you see them cheap - they just offer a few different meals with the same calorie distributions but it means you have more variety if you want to continue this way of eating later on (without the program). We juggle our own menu per our budget and family eating fussiness so the books come in handy for some different meals.
HRM is not essential - but the goal is 1200 in 500 out so if you want to know exactly what you are achieving and if you need to push harder I would definitely recommend investing in one. Some people find they focus too much on the numbers, some people it really drives and motivates them to push harder. I love mine.
A step, mat, hand weights, possibly even a bar bell wouldn't hurt - but i dont do the at home program so maybe wait and see what you think you would find useful. A skipping rope is a good idea as it gets the heart rate up. Get some music on your phone or i-device, a tabata app to mix it up a bit, myfitnesspal - start using it now, to see how mcuh you ARE eating even if you dont adjust now, and a mapmyrun or runkeeper type app for outdoor walks etc. couch25km if it interests you.
A pair of digital kitchen scales is a MUST.
A popcorn machine (i dont have one, but many people use them) for healthy airpopped popcorn as a "naughty" healthy snack alternative.
A good sports bra.
Good runner or cross trainer shoes (unless mainly running CROSS TRAINERS are the more appropriate as they have better support for the action you use).
Comfortable active gear - bigW sell the Mish brand.
Lots of freezer containers for pre-preparing meals or sandwich seal bags for the things that can be snap frozen.
Digital scales make a big difference. Most everything else is optional IMHO.
I'm still trying to figure out what to do with my HRM
Been looking at the FAQ, just wanted to know from the experience of others.
Have some Wii hand weights, so hoping they are sufficient for the moment. Already have kitchen scales, could not live without those and cooking!
Well, I put it on and it just tells me what my heart rate is... I'm not sure how to make it do anything else... ? I thought these things basically wash your car for you! Mine just tells me what my heart rate is... not calories burned, or anything else...
It's a Polar. It was my Christmas prezzie from my fam :)
