Okay, so I know that it's working for me, but I'm worried about decreasing the dose now!
How long does it take for it to become apparent if your supply has dropped with the decreased dose? Hours, days?
TIA :)

I am on it too, 10mg twice a day and if I drop one tablet, I notice it the same day. It affects me alot, with my supply dropping quite severely. I am not exclusively bf (probably half bf/half ff) though as my supply just won't increase enough not matter how hard I try :( . Motilium would probably affect everyone differently though. You may be able to slowly decrease your dosage without any problems. Good luck!
I am taking 50mg, divided into three doses. 20mg in the morning and afternoon, and 10mg at night.
yep im the same as Kel. I take one tablet in the morning and one at night and if I miss a dose I notice immediately. I am on it for the long haul :(
I'm still eating oats, but that's cos I like them! I dropped the blessed thistle cos I don't think it was doing anything for me, but still taking the fenugreek. Still pumping! I'm obviously taking alot of motilium, and I don't want to be on that much long term. i'd prefer 20mg, but I'd be happy with 30mg.
I just wanted to check what others thought as I had noticed an immediate difference when dropping tablets, and wanted to make sure I wasn't imagining it LOL!
I'm hoping that we can start solids in a bit more than three months and it won't be such a concern!
I've been on it for 7 months! If I try and drop one or forget (like today), there is a huge drop. i take 3 x 10mg per day
sez, i stopped taking fenugreek and noticed no difference..so maybe try dropping them? (they are expensive hey?)
I havent eaten oats for a week and have noticed no decrease over here
I've noticed a difference when I've missed the fenugreek, so I'm too scared to stop!
Why can't my body just produce enough milk!!!!! Grrrrrrrrr. I need to go to bed, I'm tired and cranky :p
Me too :( The little man has fed and fed this evening and even had 90mls I had expressed over the day too so now I am not sure if my supply is adequate, if he is really hungry or if he was just tired and fussing as if he was hungry :dunno:
I just want to get something right. So Sez, I'm going to bed too because I am also tired and grumpy :p
my body doesnt seem to want to make milk either. Its depressing hey/
Just hang in there...you are all doing a great job!
Thanks guys, I've got tears in my eyes! I think you're both doing a great job too :) I love BFing so much, I just don't understand why my body won't do what it's supposed to properly. I wouldn't wish it on anyone, but it is sooooo nice to know I'm not alone.
Michelle, it's so hard when you don't know what they want, hey? I think mostly my instincts are right.....but then what if they're not? LOL!
how are we supposed to know what they want? I mean really...we are only their Mothers!
haha
Im with you sez. There is nothing in the world I would rather be doing than breastfeeding at the moment and to think my body doesnt wanna come to the party is upsetting....but im gunna make it!
I'm planning on drugging my body into submission if the boobies won't come to the party on their own :p I love feeding Oscar, more when my nipples / breasts aren't sore from hourly feeding to keep the supply up but I have every intention to keep this going for as long as possible.
Girls - you are doing a great job. We just need to keep reminding ourselves and each other of this when the days get tough
Hi,
Wow its amazing how many of us are going through the same thing. YOu wouldnt wish low supply on anyone but it does help to know I'm not alone.
I'm taking motilium and my Dr prescribed 10mg 3daily for 2weeks and then 2 daily for 1week and then daily 1week and then cease. She said she wouldnt recommend taking it long term. She said there is a good chance it wont drop off completley once I cease taking it. I notice it doesnt work well if I dont do as directed and take it on an empty stomach, it seems with me it needs to be fully absorbed to work.
I figure even an extra 4weeks of BF is something to be grateful for. We can only manipulate our bodies so much and then I guess we have to accept things as they are.
Goodluck everyone
hey girls :)
I am suffering from a low supply too,,, eating oats daily,, on 2 hourly feeds,, and going nuts!!!!!
Griffen still get mad when the milk ends, and he wants more, and he pulls right back on the nipple, and it feels like he is biting me when he does it, shaking his head and clawing with his little nails too.
I am going to the GP and see if I can get a script for the medication I think,, as even with all this since we realised how badly he was doing, he is still having low weight gains,, even with solids being introduced as well :(.
Lil
Lil - I hope you got the medication. It seems to be helping me but I guess we will find out at weigh in on Thursday :crossfingers:
Fingers crossed Michelle, I hope Oscar has stacked it on! Our weigh in is thursday too! I have a lactation consultant coming out on friday though, this has gone on long enough - his weigh in last thursday showed he had only gained 52g in a fortnight. Obviously I'm quite stressed now. Still taking the motilium though.
Hi Sezjm, How did your weigh in go? Are you still taking the motlium?
My supply seems all over the place. I have been eating oats in the morning and taking fenugreek tablets. The last few days I have been feeding hourly - 2 hourly and he was even waking 2 hourly through the night which was killing me. The last three days I thought we had turned a corner. He settled into 3 hourly feeds day and night and I could hear him guzzling milk for 20 minutes each feed.
Today he didn't manage a decent feed at all. It seems I suddenly had no milk today. I ended up giving him formula a few hours ago because he was so unhappy and I knew he just hadn't had enough milk. He was so happy after and started smiling and gurgling for the first time all day. Anyone else experienced this? It is so confusing. I have great days where I think we are winning the bf battle and then others where I feel like giving up.
How is everyone else doing?
Hi Mel,
I had the same problem with my DD, but times ten! When I first brought her home, I was on motilium 30mg a day, then slowly tried to wean off it, going to two tabs, to one tab a day to nothing. I also has very badly blistered and cracked nipples. As the drugs slowly lessened, my DD started crying a bit in the day, slowly increasing by the day until she was screaming for 12 hours a day.
Unfortunately, I didn't put 2 and 2 together and couldn't work out what was wrong with her until a week or so later we went to the Dr. who told me to give her formula, which I did and she finally had a happy day after about 5 miserable weeks. My supply then dropped even more and I had thrush then she got it, then I got mastitis and I was miserable!
I was tempted to give up, but thankfully (now) I didn't. I decided that I still wanted to give DD what milk I had because I really wanted to give her the best and I just couldn't seem to stop myself from feeding her no matter how miserable I was doing it. Now here we are 3 and a bit months later and I am so happy I didn't quit. We aren't fully bfing, but she has maybe 2 full bf's a day and the rest are comp. ff. Lily loves her booby and I love feeding her now that we have settled into it.
Have you read the thread about increasing your supply? It is great and helpful. Do you express at all? Maybe that will help you. I still express two or three times a day usually, I am still on motilium and I also eat oats and aktivite and if I miss any of it, it does make a difference.
I hope you can sort out your difficulties. But remember that you need to be happy too and do what's best for both of you. Good luck.
Thanks for your reply Kellie. It sounds like you are doing a great job. I think I went through what you did last time with DS1. I ended up just feeding him morning and night and the rest bottles until he gave up the BB at 5 months. I'm glad I got to do that much. We have had ups and downs this time but have been doing much better. I have motilium but haven't taken it yet as we have been doing ok with lots of frequent feeding and expressing. I must have built up my supply as DS went from struggling to regain his birth weight to now doing 350g a week! But then we have a few days where there suddenly seems to be no milk when there had been the day before. Hopefully it will sort itself out. I had loads of milk this morning but Tyler did skip a feed during the night.
Caro - I try to make sure I drink lots of water but it is hard. Perhaps I will make sure I do as perhaps that is what makes some days better than others.
Lil - How are you going now? My DS does the same thing you described. Getting really angry when it runs out and chompng on the nipple. The only difference is I think mine is a little piggy. He is putting on loads of weight so he must be getting some - just not always enough. We have a few feeds where he manages to drink for over 10 mins each side and he comes off so content and refuses more. I would love to have that every time. It is such a feeling of satisfaction.
Hi Mel, the weigh-in went really well, thanks for asking :) He had gained 244g for the week, which is the best ever! Everyone is putting it down to the extra breastfeeds, as well as the motilium.
I had a LC come out last week, she was fantastic! I am now taking 90mg/day (she wanted me to take 120mg, but I'll see how I go on the 90 first). We have discovered that there's a few issues hindering our progress, so I have finally accepted that our BFing relationship is never going to be smooth sailing. Nicholas has a very high palate (his father's genes LOL), which means that he can't milk the breast effectively. I have moderate supply on the left, but the right side is chronically low. It would appear that the 'positional turn' that Nicholas' head has to the right has affected his feeding from birth, hence the chronic problems on the right side. So we're looking into an osteopath to have that seen to.
So I know that we will probably comp feed for as long as we are BFing, which I'm okay with, as long as he continues to take the breast! We are having some upsetting breast refusal issues this week, I can only get him to feed well when I'm lying down????? Anyway, I'm determined to continue, all the 'specialists' agree that Nicholas does not thrive on formula (my records prove it!) so it will be best for him if I can BF for as long as possible.
Hugs to all of you, it is so hard! One thing the LC did stress to me is that it's really important to keep up fluids, eat regularly, rest each day, and go for a walk each day. Hard to fit in with looking after a baby (and other kids if you have them!), expressing etc, but I do think that it's helping me.
Let me know how you all go. I think I'm on motilium for the long haul though!
Yep - still on the motilium and not giving it up any time soon until the stress in this house eases  Roll on Wednesday .....
Oscar gained 350g in 6 days on his last weigh in (yay!!!!!) and looks as if he has broken the 4kg mark finally when I did a rough weigh yesterday. Supply seems to be up but I am finding feeding out (away from my chair and pillow) is giving me sore nipples and makes feeding more difficult. Unless there is a table to lay Oscar on and then I feed him by standing over him (the joy of larger breasts )
You are doing great girls!!!
I'm so glad you posted Michelle, I have been wondering how you and Oscar were going! That's fantastic news about his weight gain :D I'm hoping that we hit the 4kg mark next week!!!!! Seeing the paed on Tuesday, so we'll find out then.
good on you sez and michelle! :D
I still cant stop taking it here either but I do agree that drinking lots of water realllllllly helps!
Sezjm, I'm glad to hear he is putting on weight. It is so hard when bf is so much harder than it should be. Dylan had tongue tie which effected him being able to milk the breast. I was so upset when I finally gave up. I hope things improve for you.
Michelle - Congrats on the huge weight gain - of bubs that is :). It sounds like things are going well. Hopefully it will get easier going out. I am finding it a bit easier now and I'm not using my pillow all the time.
Danni - how much water are you drinking every day do you think?
We are still having good and bad days with the feeding. I have motilium tablets in the cupboard which I took for a day but to be honest I've been a bit scared to take them after doing some reading on the Internet and I stopped. Has anyone else been worried about taking them? Did your doctors say there were any side-effects on the baby? I'm not wanting to put anyone off taking them I was just wondering what you had been told.
ive been slacking off a bit but you should drink 2 litres a day. But if you just try and dirnk as much as you can, thats better than nothing :)
Thanks girls.
I have a bottle around at all times too but I think I probably only manage 1L a day of water. I will try to drink a bit more.
Yep, we should all be drinking at least 2 litres of water a day. I always have a water bottle next to me when I'm feeding and use that time to drink a fair bit!
OK. Well, I thought we were doing well so I had weaned myself off the motilium. BIG mistake :( Seems my supply dropped (or Oscar had a growth spurt - or both ) and he was fussing and crying at the breast and the volume was way down. So ..... back to the beginning again. I have re-started at the first weeks dose and will wean off from there but I think I will be staying on it long term (at least until 6 months when solids should start to help). Undiagnosed PCOS is a BIG option for me but this is just soooooooo frustrating. I love BF when it is going well and the flow is good but these hiccups are making a beautiful experience a litle tarnished.
Hi girls :)
Sorry i have been MIA for a while,,, we have been flat out here,,, and the joys of low supply are never ending!!
I originally started out 2 weeks ago on motilium, at 60mg a day, but the doctor was away for that week,, and theh script, called for 42 tablets for the week,, she only gave me the one box in the script,, of 25 tablets :(,, So I was her last weka gain,, and she was sooo apologetic,, and started me again on them,,, So i have now had the week of 60mg,, and am on the 2nd week,, at 40mg. I take Griffen to get weighed in half an hour,, so fingers crossed.
His last weight for the past 2 weeks,,, was 50mg a week :(. He is also waking EVERY night for feeds wheras he used to sleep through.
He also has 2 solid feeds a week as well,,,, . The health nurse says that the 50mg is chronically low,,, as that is just the difference with a big poo in weight,,, so it is too low to actually mark down as pure weight gain.
I have also started giving him the farex banana custard in the mornings,, and using formula on that,, as i just dont have the supply to express that milk for him. So I am hoping that it makes a nice difference to his weight gain too.
I am also having oats every day,,, tried the activite, but didnt like it, and found no difference. However,, I have just started mothers milk herbal tea,, and am just waiting to see if it makes a difference too.
It seems no matter who i speak to,,, everyone tells me to just put him on the bottle and be done with it,,,,, well,, everyone excpet my gp and the ECHN.
I tried him on formula straight from a bottle,, and he hated it!!. He loves breastfeding,, and gets so excted when he sees me lay him down for it, that it is so frustrating that others cant give a little support instead of making me feel like a bad mum. It is not like I am not trying my hardest to do the best for him. I guess we are all copping that attitude though huh.
Michelle, Sezjm,,, great nes on the weight gains!! fingers crossed that your bubbas keep it going :)
Michelle,, I also noticed when the last script ran out,, what little increase i noticed,,, vanished overnight on the motilium, i think i may be a long termer too.
I also have PCOS,,, does it influece breastfeeding at all?
Ok girls,, have to get ready to take this littlun for his weighin,,,,, wish me luck :)
P.S,,, my ticker has stopped working,,,,, he is over 6 months now lol
Lil Aussie - Good luck at the weight in...let us know how you go. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but about this age weight gain slows down anyway (Barb??) and a gain is a gain no matter what, so try not to stress out too much. Maybe he's just not going to be a big boy? Neither of my kids are big bubbas, but then again neiher DH and I were big babies ourselves. I have decided that I am actually not going to get Ned weighed anymore (until like the 12 month vacs probably) as I just find it far too stressful. I know he is a happy and healthy boy, just on the lean side! I am still taking motilium too...have been since he was 3 months and I think I will be until he is weaned. Anyway good luck.
Big hugs to those still struggling - we are too! I agree Michelle, the hard times certainly leave a bit of a bad after taste. I never thought it would be this hard long-term! But I'm still determined :) The good parts make up for it still.
Soph, how much are you taking these days?
Sez - I take 10mg 3 times a day
Were you taking more before, or have you always taken 30mg?
Always 30mg. Although having said that Ned just had the flu quite badly and was totally off feeding. I found my supply decreased dramatically again (and he was getting quite dehydrated as it was) so I upped it 60mg for a day. Back down to 30mg now. How about you?
I am taking 90mg/day. I did drop down to 60mg, but I noticed a big difference, so I'm sticking to 90mg for the moment. My LC did recommend taking the max which is 120mg, but I don't feel comfortable doing that, I don't know why?! Anyway, at least now if something happens, like one of us gets sick, I've got some leeway to increase my dose.
I am back on 60mg but it is good to know I can increase the dose further. Thanks Sez!! I am hoping my supply will be better for the moment but I seem to have picked up a bug of some sort. I had a temperature of 38.9 earlier so I am watching the blister on my right nipple to make sure that isn't the cause. I just don't need to be sick on top of all this breastfeeding stuff and find my supply gets worse.
Caro - I just take 2 tablets 3 times a day to increase to 60mg. But like everything, remmeber it is a prescription drug and best check with your GP before you increase.
Yep - same for me. I am following the instruction sheet from the MCHN. It has a weaning regime too.
Caro, none of my Drs knew about it, they all wanted to put me on Maxalon. It was at my suggestion that I got the script. I discussed the dosage with my MCHN and my LC. I take 3 tablets 3 times a day.
