Jess, if your hands are that dry using any hand cream, even just sorbelene cream, rubbing it in to your hands of a night time and wear a pair of cotton gloves to bed over them. This will creat more heat and make the cream penetrate your hands better.
Always keep a tube of cream near the basin too, so whenever you wash your hands, like after changing nappies ts there for you to put on.
Now, if only I could follow my own advice :)
I tried sorbelene and normally it works but I think due to pregnancy it isn't.. I went and bought some home brand Vitamin E cream and it works great! and also some Vaseline Intensive Care.. My hands are dry to the point of cracking. I still have dry hands but only because I don't maintain the cream putting on and my hands seem permanetly wet!
The best hand cream I've found is one from Nutrogena, I think it's called swiss formula or something like that. It's available from the supermarket and comes in a white tube with red and blue writing. It's great, my hands have been so dry (still trying to get used to this cold Melbourne weather, we're new to VIC) and it works wonders. Not too expensive either which is a bonus!
I started using the Gaia Baby Moisturiser on my hands (it was the nearest thing to hand pardon the pun). It is amazing - my hands are much better now. I'm just going to keep using it rather than buy an expensive product.
Have you tried the Shae butter products from the body shop, depends on your budgetI spose but really good and works so well.
Good Luck
Dee
Since I had DS, I've had very dry skin on my hands, especially on my knuckles.
I use an ego QV had wash, no soap (this will dry your skin out more) and QV cream afterwards. Depending how dry they are I put the cream on in between washes as well.
I had to keep them out of water as much as possible, not easy with all the hand washing that goes on with a newborn, but this settled down after a few months and its fine now.
I love the Shea butter - it smells sooooooo good . I have the bubble bath and the butter, mmmmm.
Ok I used to work at Body Shop and there is a few things you can do.
Almond Oil Conditioning Hand Wash - about $14 (but will last you for months), it is almost like a lotion, and a beautiful way to wash your hands. I have mine by the sink in the kitchen.
There is also a matching Almond Oil hand cream, it's a big seller and very very good.
BUT if you want to bring out the heavy artillery I really suggest the Hemp Hand Protector. It's about $22, will last ages and it will work. I sold bucketloads to nurses, childcare workers, gardeners and mechanics. Hemp seed oil is packed full of essential fatty acids, more than any thing else available. It even works on excema.
They have lovely cotton gloves (as suggested above) for about $6.50 too.
Jesabel - I have very sensitive skin and my hands usually dry to the point of cracking in winter. I have tried all of the above - held out much hope for the body shop Hemp Hand Protector but it stung my hands and didn't really do much. I originally brought it for DH (he's a mechanic) and it hasn't really worked for him either unfortunately.
I brought Lucas' Pawpaw ointment and it worked a treat! Completely healed the cracking (although because my hands were so bad they were a bit red and inflamed for the first few days of applying the ointment) and my hands have been fantastic ever since.
I have heard really good things about the Hemp Hand Protector, unfortunately it just didnt work for us, Lulu is right though, one tube will last you forever!
Lulu - do you know if they sell the cotton gloves in big sizes (really big!)?? My DH's hands are really bad so I'd love to get him to try this, not sure if he'd do it but worth a shot! He's complaining to me every night now how sore they are so he might be willing to try it.
From somebody with severe hand eczema, the best product on the market (and actually recommended by all my dermos, which is a big suprise, as its a common brand one) - is Norwegian Formula (not Swiss), by Nutrogena.
Helps a lot with my hands when they are so cracked and bleeding and i'm trying to keep off the cortiosone cream.
I personally didn't like the all over body one in the same range, but love the hand one.
I've tried every other thing listed above, this is the only one that made 1 iota of difference.
willow, they come in one size, but they will stretch. I had a guy buy the exfoliating gloves which look much smaller and a managed to gt into a nice pink pair (the screaming queen that he was!) The cotton ones are white tho!
Hi Jesabell, I also have sensitive hands and sometimes during winter they even bleed. I am using Hemp Hand Protector from Body Shop and found it to be really good so far. I always keep it in my bag :) From personal experience, I found Sorbolene or Shea Butter (although I really love the fragrance!) a bit greasy for hands, while Hemp absorbs into your skin pretty quickly.
I use the hemp one for DD3 ecsema, brilliant stuff!!
Just moving this to Beauty and Fashion....
For Christmas I was given Crabtree and Evelyn hand therapy which is an exfoliant scrub and then a cream - it is the most wonderful thing on earth but the tubes are almost empty and so I am saving to get more. I love it because it gets rid of any dry flaky skin (or paint etc depending on what I have been doing) and then adds the moisture.
I swear by the hemp hand protector!! And DH uses it cause he was a mechanic but now a delivery driver throwing boxes around and his hands are worse now if he forgets to put it on then when he was a mechanic!!
There is a hand cream by Avon - can't remember what it's called but it's in an orange bottle and its main ingrediant is Parrafin - it's fantastic!
Hi Jessbell - I'm very fussy when it comes to handcream as most of them stay greasy for a long time after application. The only one I like is Dove Hand Cream (for Extremely Dry Hands). It smells great and the greasiness evaporates very quickly. I carry it around in my handbag and use it 2-3 times a day.
I swear by the Norwegian formula that Yael mentioned. It works a treat and you only need a tiny bit.
I used to use it when I was working in a bar so my hands were getting wet all the time and getting detergants etc on them and they never dried out.
When my hands get exceptionally dry (usually from washing my hands too much with the wrong type of soap), I find using any moisturiser mixed with a bit of essential oil helps. You could probably use a bit of olive oil if you don't have essential oil. They go a bit greasy for a bit until it's all absorbed into your skin but find it does the trick for me.
Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream.
It's BRILLIANT.
go to a climbing shop and buy some hand jam - it is incredible - yes it is a bit expensive but you only put it on morning and night, DH is a rigger and uses it daily and it keeps his hands soft
thanks guys u have been really helpful
Hi the sorbaline cream i bought from bricknell supplies is the best, they are in sydney and will sell it to you in any size i buy bulk because i use it quite a bit give them a call and they will send it to you, so if you dont live close you can get it anywhere.
I use olive oil on my hands when they're really dry, I also use sweet almond oil. DH uses "Hand Jam" which he gets from climbing shops - he is a rigger so is in contact with ropes etc all day so his hands get horribly dry.
I purposely stay away from any petrochemical by-product (of which sorbelene is).
