How are you finding the course?
Is it what you thought it would be?
Do you have a timetable from this year that I could have a look through?
I have just put in a late application to both uni's for Bach of Mid.
Offers aren't released till the 16th but I am trying to do a bit of planning so that should I get in, its not last-minute move.

I am at UQ doing the dual nursing/midwifery course so can answer your q's with my opinion!
How are you finding the course? I don't really like the course, but have my eye on the prize in the end... I did first year nursing at QUT before this and they are so totally different in the structure which I much preferred. Everything in this course such as anatomy and physiology, social behaviours and public health is thrown in altogether. The course is very self directed, I often complain that it is too much like studying externally. There is no "teaching" as such, no lecture/tutorial set up, just lectures. You do a lot of it by yourself and this gives me the feeling that I am not learning as much as I can. Exam at the end of the semester is one exam per unit, they are so very broad and is very hard to study for.
Is it what you thought it would be? Nope.
Do you have a timetable from this year that I could have a look through? It is a four day a week course no if's or buts. You get put into a group (depending on what hospital you are based at) with two days being prac, one day at the hospital where you are based at doing problem based learning and a bit of clinical skills in the mock labs, and then one day out at Ipswich doing lectures. First year's lecture day is Friday, and we had prac on Monday and Tuesday.

HJ - I'm 9yrs out of school this year, how do I even go about applying? Do I study to be an EN at tafe first, get a job as an en to see if I like it, or go straight into an rn course at uni?
Hi hj & sconeonamission. Did you get a school ranking, or in QLD is the OP? You may be able to use that and you just go through the tertiary entrance sites (such as QTAC.. sorry don't know about any other states!). Other than that you can do a STAT test that are run by the tertiary entrance sites.
You could do EN at tafe, but that really is a long way around. The best thing about uni, is that if you don't like it, you don't have to go on. I tried my hand at business and tourism before I realised Iwould love to be a midwife. I applied to do direct entry mid, but didn't get in as it is so competitive, my second choice was nursing, to which I got in. I was scared of nursing, I didn't really want to do it, but at that point to get to mid may have been my only option. I surprised myself by absolutely loving it. Then I did a crazy thing by transferring to UQ, but will continue on now as I am one year down on coming out with dual qualification. Enough from me blah blah :)

Thanks for your reply 3GO! I have started a Nursing degree up here at JCU 3 times! I have never been through to finish the course. Mainly due to health issues and pregnancy but also because its so damn BORING!!! So I do know where you are coming from.
I only applied for Bach of Midwifery in both uni's.
Do you know if the course structure is different?
Rhianon - As 3GO said, no you don't need to go to TAFE to become a nurse. That would be the long way round. As she said, just apply to the nearest uni that offers a bach of nursing and apply through QTAC. You may still have some time to apply now if you are intersted but you will cop a late fee of about $100.
Harmony - As I said in my PM, the STAT test is totally up to you. I did book one but when I got the practice test I thought it would be way to hard for me so I didn't go. I would rather go in with an "empty" application that a $hit result on a stat test IYKWIM. At the end of the day its your decision. You don't have much time left so you'll need to make up your mind quick.
So 1st round offers go out tomorrow!!!! I doubt that mine will be in it but fingers crossed i get in!

I checked online for 1'st round offers today and unfortunetly my application wasn't processed in time for the 1'st round.
So at this stage, I haven't got in. :sad:
So please keep everything crossed that I get an offer in the 2nd round which will be on the 2nd of Feb.

No, I didn't do a stat test. My last formal year of education was 1999 when I did 6 months of a business degree. I finished school in 1995 with an OP of 12 or 14... can't remember :redface:
my OP was bad! Much much worse than 14. I'd rather not apply using that, i feel i could be a bit smarter now! Well here's hoping anyway!

Well Ladies, I didn't even try for an OP! Way back then I didn't have any interest in Uni at all. I didn't want to do anything that needed to be done at Uni. I'd always thought being a Midwife would have been great but at the time (year 12) I didn't do more than think about it.
My beautiful girls were my blessings in disguise. They have put me on the "yellow brick road" to my passion. I am very thankful for that.
I'm also glad that I have quite a bit of life experience under my belt. You need that to be a good Midwife I reckon. Just my opinion though.
Rhianon - I don't think you would be too late. You'd just have to do it as soon as possible. The further away from the 2nd of Feb the better. Plus I don't think they would offer mid year entries for Nursing or Mid.

Scone, the closest uni to you would be Griffith. I know QUT do midyear intake and I am sure Griffith do as well.
I was also thinking that if no one wanted to do the STAT, another option is the Adult Tertiary Prep course through TAFE. You can do whatever units you like, say a biology, communication or computer skills and you can do it through open tafe so study at your own pace. I know a few people that have successfully gotten into uni by doing the ATP, one even did well and got into midwifery.
Sara, I thouroghly agree with you. It is great to bring life experience into a course like this. I know that someone can talk to me and I understand what they are talking about, whereas the girls that have come straight out of uni are like deers in the headlight. It can also be frustrating as so much time is spent explaining stuff, but I have to think to myself that that is what the course is all about. Can you imagine doing midwifery and not even knowing what "gestation" means???? :doh:
i ladies, i too am hoping to go to uni, i am currently doing a prep course thru CQU.. its called a WIST course and its free! i am doing communication pathways and transistion maths at the momen.. if anyone wants anymore info send me a PM.. and ill be happy to help.. its very similar to the Tafe course.. you do it all in your own time, your own deadlines etc..
i have not applied for entry this year, i am hopig to do a mid year entry for griffith nursing.

I rung around on Friday and it seems for me ACU will prob be the best one - all though its a fair drive! but in the end that dosent bother me - im determined this time to not let anything stand in my way of acheiving my dream! :)

I found a nice place I might be interested in. Its in Bracken Ridge. Will that be close to you? Its $270 but thats the cheapest 3brm place I could find in range of the uni. Its only a Massionette but its nice.

Yeh spending a year preparing is a good idea. I have had 3 years to prepare! So now I am ready to just get on with it! :lol:

Honestly, enjoy your little girl! They grow up way to quick hun. At least this time next year she will be nearly 15 months old!
In the mean time just do little bits and peices to educate yourself as much as possible. Do the prep courses. Get your First Aid Cert. All those things so that when you go to apply in August, you will be ready.
I have my first aid - i work for the Ambulance Service
But its just finding out how to do these other courses and finding time etc to do so which at the moment is looking impossible to me!
Why cant it be easy to apply and get it?

If your interested in those courses, call the TAFE closest to you.
One of the Baby Buddy mums I know did the prep courses through TAFE and is now doing her Bach of Nursing. I'll send her PM a see what she says and I will get back to you.
Why don't you wait until after you have moved? When your all settled in, start looking into the courses then. Moving is stressful stuff!

I just re-read one of your previous posts.
So they uni have said that the studies you have done so far are not enought to get you into the Mid course right?
What did they say about the Nursing course?
I know you don't want to do the Nursing course, and I COMPLETLY understand that, but if you could get into the Nursing course you'd be right. You could do the Nursing course for a year and then apply for a transfer into the Midwifery course after the first year.
I called ACU the other day and that was what they reccomended I do aswell. I didn't bother dribbling on about how I had already started the Nursing course 3 times in the last 3 years and that I didn't interest me in the slightest.
But you know, If its was the only way (other than waiting until the end of this year) I was going to get in, I would apply to ACU for Nursing and then transfer. I think if I had the right support, I could get through the first year no worries.
Sara, I'm in Mount Cotton, somewhere sort of between Loganholme and Cleveland. Redland Bay is the area. I'm going to call the TAFE tomorrow and see what they can offer me. I thing I want to start mid year.
Rhianon - So how long would it take you to drive from your place to Uni? When I look at the maps and stuff it all looks so far in between destinations!!!

I went back into my QTAC application and added a couple of more preferences. I added Nursing for BOTH Uni's and I added the Dual Mid/Nursing Degree through Uni of Qld.
I figure that I can put up with Nursing for 1 year ONLY and then transfer over to Mid in the 2nd year.
I am keeping everything crossed that I just get into the Midwifery course though! :pray: :pray: :pray:
I've also been doing some researching the last couple of days and I honestly think that the Uni of Qld Mid course is better than the ACU Mid course.

Well im pretty much on the verge of yet again giving up on another dream - seems like im not meant to live out my dreams!
I rung up to enquire about WIST etc than rung UQ to see if they will accept courses done thru WIST and they wont!
Havent rung ACU yet!
Looks like if i really want to do midwifery than i might have to do nursing than midwifery!!!!! why oh why do things have to be hard to get into!!! why oh why did i just not go straight from school into uni? why oh why did i get a job first, buy a house, get married, have a bub, than think about me and my dream career???????

If you get into nursing and get good marks then you can try to get into mid the next year. The first year of nursing is the same as the first year of mid. All the mid courses will have the nursing components as as much as people don't like to think that midwifery is nothing like nursing, it is. You still need the basics. And, between you and me, the Midwives out there don't really like/agree with some of the direct entry midwifery programs. They are finding these new grads come through and don't know enough about the nursing skills to be competant in the whole role of a midwife.:shhh: And, doing nursing first opens up so many more doors for your career... Maternity and child health, NICU, women's health (I did my first nursing prac in the gynaecology ward and loved it!! I decided that women's health is what I want to do with my nursing side of the degree)
Sara, Bracken Ridge is nice. Just a little note, the northside is pretty bad for childcare vacancies. I would be putting the horse before the cart and finding that in the area that you like before a house. If you are going to go to UQ, I would loook for a place closest to the hospital where you will be based at, as you will be there 3 days a week (RBWH, Ipswich or Mater). Look up Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au for their rentals.

So your studying through Uni of Qld hey??? As i posted before, I did my research and from what I found the UQ course was much more Midwifery focussed than the ACU Mid course. I guess you wouldn't really know the difference cause you are doing the dual course right?
Thanks 3GirlsOnly - last night i was thinking about the whole nursing thing - but im just worried that if i dont like it and i dont do well than i wont be able to transfer over and do the Midwifery! but than i understand that alot of the Midwifery stuff has to do with the nursing stuff aswell - and i understand where the midwives are comming from! i guess im just worried that i might not do well and than end up back where i started!
i think maybe i just gotta stop my whinging and do something!!!!

I am pretty certain that If I don't get an offer into either of the Mid courses they will offer me nursing for a year. So if thats they case, I will be moving down there. As someone who has partly been through the uni process 3 times, I am happy to be your study buddy/motivater if you'll be mine!!!
