    New Overlocker - now what?

Mum and I have never bothered with overlockers. She'd never used one and so never taught me, and my school only taught sewing machines. And it has never been a problem, but a few years back we started discussing the idea of getting one to share. So fast forward to Christmas, where I had no idea what to get Mum for Christmas and I walked past the overlockers in Spotlight and suddenly had a light bulb moment. So because I could get one for a fantastic price (over 50% off) I bought it for us to share.

So here we are, both of us, with a brand spanking new machine, and absolutely no idea what to do next!!

    Any suggestions?

    i would seriously suggest lessons,.
SPotlight might help you -you should really get them to show you your machine.
They can take a bit to get used to , and you need to learn to thread and tension correctly or you will never get it right lol!!

give them a call - they should out of plain service teach you otherwise if you have an independent store who will offer you a personalise service they may give you lessons

know what I love about them.....they cut at the same time as sewing...so if your want to sew panels together use your overlocker...once you start you will have more light bulb moments

MummyTummy- You need to get Maz to show you how to work it. I'm going to buy one, after I saw her using hers, and I need lessons, so will be hunting her down.

I would just start with some basic things, perhaps make some cloth wipes etc, and play with the different stitch settings that way you can see what each dial does and that way you get an idea on where to start, and it won't matter if they are all "perfect" IYKWIM It is great to as it cuts as you go, so you cane make nice rounded corners without have to precut the round corners as well

Also you can do a rolled hem, but removing one of the threads (I think it is one )

The best way of re-threading with different colours is to tie the threads together, rather than threading from scratch as some of the threads are a real pain in the bum to have to rethread each time

Also look on you tube and see if there are any demos on who to use the machine that you have purchased, and if all else fails, round Maz up and get some lessons

Have fun though, overlockers are sooo much fun, hoping to inherrit my mums when she buys a new one

    Thanks everyone!!

We ended up getting lessons, just finished last week! I am now an expert at threading the machine.... and I know what it should be capable of.... but I am still working on how to remember the different stitches etc!!

I'm on mat leave as of Easter so here's hoping that I get a bit of a chance to play with it and do some projects to give me some practice.

....but lessons with Maz sound awesome! Are you up for it Maz?
