Since DF is taking his time sorting out a new dining table for us, I'm investigating the option of buying a sewing cabinet so that I can at least put my sewing machine to work again rather than it slacking off sitting on the coffee table
What features did you look for? Where did you get it? I don't really need anything fancy, just something simple that I can sew on, with a bit of storage space for bits and bobs. And not too big, because I'm not exactly sure where it would go...probably in our spare room which already has a tallboy and double bed in it...
My mum has one which I would love to snitch, I don't think she has used her machine for a few years now, and she has an overlocker as well *drool*..but I don't think she would let me have it...lol
My mum has a proper sewing cabinet with the machine bit that you can push the machine down into it and it opens out, but TBH I hate it. It's cumbersome and ungainly and a bit ricketty and it a Janome one.
I have my machine and OL on a white desk I got from Fantastic Furniture. It wasn't very exxie and it's not huge but both machines can sit comfortably and are able to be used. It has a couple of drawers under the desk (not down the side like a traditional desk) which are good for bits and bobs.
Before that I used a $40 computer desk from Ikea (actually the one I'm sitting at now ) and used a cutlery tray on the keyboard bit to hold what I needed.
o and ETA - you should ask your mum - you never know your luck
I agree with KIm...my mum has a exxy proper sewing cabinet, where everything neatly tucks away and all doors shut nicely, but its a piece of furniture i wouldnt actually like in my house. Im looking for a sewing table ATM too...im using our everyday living computer desk, and the looks i get from DH whilst im overlocking need to be quashed....
I like the idea of fantastic furniture......
Ive had a look in ebay...they seem expensive for something that is second hand...and the antique ones make me wanna puke.
GL....
I guess it depends if you want to be able to tuck it all away when you aren't using it or if you mind having the machine out all the time. My mum has a Horn cabinet that once I get organised will be mine and I can store my machine and overlocker plus books and threads etc and it all gets tucked away. This issue is what mbear said - it's a hideous looking thing haha! If I decide to use it here I will make a fabric cover for it -or else am going to paint it and decopage it or something.
While I did have them here I had them on an Ikea desk and then I have all my fabric and thread in tubs. That works well but I hate having them out all the time. My dream house will have a big huge enormous wall to wall cupboard and it will open up and VOILA it will all be stored beautifully - sort of like Patty Young's studio but all in a cupboard and it will be a hidden away oasis. A girl can dream right?
