sewing a curtain ... help please

I found some material today which would be perfect as a curtain in bubs room. We have timber venetians in there at the moment, which will stay, so I was thinking of hanging some curtains just to add some colour. So I only need it for presentation looks.
Can someone help me with this though. I'm ok at doing the hemming around the sides and bottom, but what about the top. I know there are different hanging methods (don't know the correct terminology lol). What are my options there? I want to hang it on a timber rod. I will head to Spotlight either this afternoon or tomorrow to see what they've got, but thought I'd pick your brains first and get a heads up so I know what I'm looking for.

    TIA!

There are a number of ways to do the tops. You can do a simple rod pocket. You sew a pocket large enough to slip the rod through on the top of the curtain, so make sure you allow for that when buying your fabric.
You can do tabs, which will involve more sewing as you will have to hem each tab and then sew them in place.

You can also by gathering tape which you buy curtain tracks to run on. These tend to glide nice and easily if you want to pull them back. You simply turn over the raw edge at the top and sew on the tape. You then pull up the strings to gather your curtain. You will also need to buy the earwigs (yes they are really called that) which are the little plastic hooks that you put through the curtain tape and then attach to the hooks on the curtain track.
You can also buy curtain fabric with the tape on the top already and just hem it to the correct length.

Make sure you buy at least 1.5 times the width of the window for your gather, 2 times if you want really full curtains.

    Hope that helps!
