Sewing Machine Threads, give me your recommendations please :)

What brand of threads do you use and what ones don't you use and why?

I have Guternmann, and find them good but not particularly cheap, I was given a big box of rainbow graded threads for christmas but as they are now in my thread box I don't know the brand and there is no labelling on them.

I tend to get the Gutermann. It depends what I'm sewing as to which one I'll use.

If you use cotton thread, then the thread is more likely to break if something gets stretched or pulled too hard. Then you can just mend the seam.
If you use synthetic thread, the fabric is more likely to tear away from it or pull at the ends.

I buy thread on a case by case basis, and I accept a lot of handme downs from MiL, so my collection is fairly substantial.

I tend to stick to Guterman. It does help though that many years ago we found bags of reels at an Op shop for next to nothing. I prefer cotton, but then I do tend to use natural fabrics and prefer to keep the natural theme going, sometimes though colour wise it is not possible. Also with overlocker threads, there is no choice (well not that I have noticed)

I buy whatever 100% cotton thread I can find, usually Gutermann if I"m at spotlight but the quilting stores often hold other brands as well...I think the more important thing is to match your thread with your fabric (ie cotton for cotton, polyester blend if you're working with tougher synthetics) etc. In quilting you do a lot of sewing with threads that need to blend with lots of fabrics, so I always keep a selection of dark greys, muddy browns, creams and navy blue as other colours tend to stick out, and I buy the larger reels, which work out better value for money.

Thankyou so much for the tips I didn't realise that you get the thread to match the fabric I was just getting the Gutermann "All Sew Thread". I will look at getting the thread to match the material from now on

I have a pretty limited collection of plain colours, so will have to buy up, better find some vouchers for Spottys in my mail pile Also got my birthday voucher to spend
