So that the book swap club doesn't get mired down in Jnae Austen I thought I'd start a thread here so that we can discuss her merits, or lack thereof.
I love Jane Austen and it makes me sad that her opus is so small especially in light of the fact that her later work was becoming so much more sophisticated
TBH it bugs me when I see her represented primarily as a writer of romances because I always see her as a bit of a ***** (which is a compliment - I can't stand wishy washy nice people lol); a satirist and a feminist.
I think that under the veneer of comic, romantic novels she said a great deal about the roles of women and men that remains true to this day.
The character of Miss Bates in Emma is a figure of fun but Mr Knightley's sketch of her situation and future is a brilliant feminist and social analysis.
As for the charge that she takes 100 pages to say what could have been said in three. I disagree - fictional writing is about setting a mood and tones as well conveying information - rushing the narrative would steal something very beautiful from it and deny us the wit that is so central to Jane Austen's writing. In fact the same charge could be laid at the feet of over half the great works of literature. Surely War and Peace could have been condensed to a novella![]()
