I saw this book while I was in BigW doing my Christmas shopping, and I thought it looked quite good in terms of explaining the real basics that some people who are just learning how to cook could really benefit from, but I thought it was just 'too American', and full of sugar and other junk. I was almost tempted to get it as a gift for someone, but decided against it.
-
I actually found this book to be less "American" than some other books I have seen, but IKWYM. If concerned about sugar you could always reduce it - rarely is sugar an "essential" in a recipe (in the way that flour or milk may be...)
There are about 80 recipes in the book. Yummy sounding ones include French toast with pumpkin puree, banana bread with cauliflower (!), oatmeal with sweet potato (!!) and chocolate pudding with avocado (!!!) You get the picture - each recipe has hidden puree :)

Okay I just did another DD inspired dish!!
Turkey meatballs & chips
Meatballs:
500gm turkey mince
1/2 cup sweet potato puree
1/2 cup broccoli puree
1 clove garlic crushed
1 cm grated ginger
1 tbsp honey
2 tbsp soy sauce (you could use tamarind if you wanted less preservatives)
1 carrot grated finely
1 tsp coriander
1 egg
Mix it all together & pop into the fridge for 20-30 minutes
Meanwhile chop into "chips"
3 potatos
1 large sweet potato or 2 smaller ones
Combine in a large bowl with 1 tbsp olive oil, 1 clove garlic crushed & some pepper.
*Pop the chips in the oven on 180 for around 20 minutes & then turn up the heat & make them crunchy.
*When you put the chips in the oven, warm up the fry pan with a thin layer of olive oil, roll the mince into small balls & cook :)
So even though Matilda wouldn't eat the "orange chips" she still ate 5 meatballs!!! WOOT!

Well done Christy.
I just got the book today at Kmart for $21.95. I'm not sure if that's their normal price or a special (there was no price label), but I'm really pleased to get it at that price. I guess now I'll have to try the recipes!!
-
Ok, I'm sold. I have tried the chicken nuggets (with broccoli) and the burgers (with cauliflower). Everyone loved them! Even DH who hates broccoli and knew that was in them LOL!
-
I'm going to check it out next time I'm in KMart...sounds good :)
-
MR I made the applesauce muffins - they are really nice. DH said they are a bit "cardboardy" (I think the oats make em like that) so they MUST be healthy LOL!!
-
I just bought it today & am so excited to try some of the recipes. Zander saw that I bought a new cook book and has asked to mke some cup cakes tomorrow - his wish is my command ;) So we've picked either choc cupcakes (with avocado & cauli) or the choc chip ones (with pumpkin & squash).
We're also trying the tortilla cigars for dinner tomorrow!
Wish me luck!!
-
Good luck Sarah. I reckon it'll be a hit!!

It looks really good but there is another Australian one on the market called "Cauliflower Conspiracy" a lady wrote it who worked as a chef at a Child care centre... its brilliant I have it and there are heaps of good recipies and advise for fussy eaters.
There is a website if anyone is interested just search for Cauliflower Conspiracy.
I made the meat loaf tonight and believe me i have a fussy eater and he ate it without too many dramas and it had cauliflower, zuchinni , carrot, onion in it !
-
ohhhh will have to look that one up! Thanks Jane.

2 new books needed I see ;)
-
Jessica Seinfeld is on Oprah now talking about the book.
ETA- 1pm AEST
-
Wow after watching it on Oprah I am totally convinced and will be buying a copy when I'm out next! I wanna try those brownies!! I love the idea of pureeing at the beginning of the week and chucking vegies into everything! It will ease my mother guilt over Em not getting enough vegies!!
-
I know, I don't have kids but I don't eat enough vegies, I'm gonna buy it and hide the vegies from myself, lol.
Is a blender and food processor much different? I've only got a blender, can I use that?
-
I only use a bar mix to do mine so I'm sure a blender would be fine ;)
BTW: Just ordered a copy of Cauliflower Conspiracy for my friend... can't wait to see it!!
