    Fondant??

    Howdy All,

    I am planning on making the cake for my up coming baby shower but am torn between how to ice it. I usually do a white choc ganache with this particular recipe, but am toying with the idea of using fondant.

    I have never used the stuff before and seeing that I am pretty novice at cake decorating am looking for tips and advice on the stuff.

    I cannot give too much away about the deco's but I think the fondant will make the cake easier to decorate as I have an idea in my mind. I can always revert back to ganache and cream though.

    Any advice welcomed

    Before putting the fondant on, put a very very thing layer of jam on the cake to it sticks.

    When rolling the fondant out, don't flip it over, keep the back as the back so if it gets a dirty spot or anything it will be on the cake & not visible. Try not to touch the top as it's really easy to dent, when moving it hold it only by the sides & underneath. Also use cornflour on your work surface not icing sugar as it can be lumpy & you want a smooth surface to work on.

    To get the right size, use your rolling pin to roughly measure the top & sides of the cake so you know what size to roll out. Make sure it's bigger than the cake so you can chop bits off.

    If it's a square cake smooth down the corners first so you don't get puckers in them. If you get any bubbles, just use a clean pin to pop them & smooth it out. Again, try not to touch the top too much or you'll dent it.

    I am doing a 2 tiered cake (just to make sure everyone gets some and that there will be some left over for me to gorge on). The bottom is a 24x24x8 cm cake and the top is 16x16x7cm squares - how much will I need .... also where to you buy it? Jam is a great idea too I would never have thought of that.
    How do you stick moulded chockie on it?

    I am so jealous I would love to do a cake deco course but I doubt I'd ever use it for anything

    Just google cake decorating shops & you should find somewhere to get it. I've got no idea how much you'd need though We did a 9" square cake & used 1kg of fondant on that, so I think you'd need a few kilos. Have you got a plan on what to do at the bottom of your top tier (just so you can't see the end of the fondant IYKWIM)? You can either do piping around it or make coloured balls of fondant to stick on there which looks really funky.

    To do a two tier cake, you will need dowel to go into it so the top tier doesn't collapse. I'm not exactly sure how to do it yet (I will in a few weeks LOL) but again the cake decorating shop people can help with that, or youtube is really good for cake decorating demos

    To stick anything on you can make up a bit of royal icing & use that (you'd also use it if you pipe around the bottom of the cake).

    I can just imagine getting a cake all pretty and ready to go but then pull it out of the fridge and see it resembling what cows leave in the paddock

    Yeah I was thinking of ribbon and little piping blobs. the coloured balls sound like a wonderful idea to and will be a bit different. I really loved what Poh did around the edge of that wedding cake I am not sure I would be as competent I get shaky hands whenever I do really delicate stuff.
