Juice! And juice bars.... They are so so bad for your teeth & drinking a glass of juice is worth several pieces of fruit in terms of sugars etc.
I completely agree with the juice too, so many people buy a bottle of juice instead of a softdrink and inr eality they both have as much sugar as each other. For us both softdrinks and juice are only an occassional weekend treat.
It actually takes approximately 13 oranges to make a standard glass of orange juice :o
We do not give DD juice either, she only had in once when MIL gave her pineapple juice when I went to go and get myself a drink  She is a big water drinker and we want to keep it that way ;)
99% of things that are 99% Fat Free and FULL of sugar, and with so many different names for sugar people don't realise...
Breakfast here is only oats or we have the kids weetbix, but DD hasn't eaten them for a while. We don't buy any of the other cereals.
We occassionally have takeout, but at the moment we are lucky if it is once a fornight but a lot closer to once a month, if we do go out I would prefer a "propper dinner" not a paper bag dinner ;)
5 min muffin recipe, please!!!
Sure thing!
I'm not home right now, but will post as soon as i get home. I almost know it off the top of my head, but better check. :D
My pet peeve (from when I was still a vego) is the supposedly 'healthy' artificial, processed soy junk they try and palm off to vegetarians (you know what I mean, vegie sausages, etc) Never mind that half the stuff is GM, overprocessed, chemical and that non-fermented soy is loaded with phyto-oestrogens.
Hmmm, also, that white bread they somehow modify to put fibre back into? And, margarine - shudder, it is black when it comes out before they colour it, that can't be good, gave me some whole natural butter anyday. And toasted muesli. Oh it's so good, but so high in fat! Totally agree with you ladies, breakfast cereals are pure junk, plus on the odd occasion where I've had to eat it I get hungry an hour later because my sugar levels drop like a rock. Only porridge and natural muesli in this house ;) Woop, I'm in danger of ranting
:yeahthat::
5 min muffin recipe, please!!!
:leap:
Pretty sure this is it, but it is off the top of my head, i will amend it when i get home if i got it wrong!
Heat oven to 180. grease a muffin tin.
In a mixer (i use a kitchen aid but you could use beaters i am sure) put the following;
125g butter softened. (I just have it out of the fridge for an hour or so)
2 Cups Self raising flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2C sugar- i use brown sugar but any is fine. The original recipe says 3/4C but i find 1/2 just fine.
1/2 cup milk
1/2 tsp of vanilla- i use a vanilla bean but you don't have to.
2 eggs
Mix until combined and lightens slightly in color.
Stir in about 1-2 cups of what ever fruit you like. I have done apple. peach. Banana. Apple and blueberry (frozen are fine too). apple and sultana. you can use fresh fruit, dried fruit, choc chips, coconut, anything you like.
Spoon in muffin tins and cook at 180 for about 15 min. :D
Sas- don't even get me started on SOY! You rant away woman. ;)
I'm agreeing with pretty much everything in here :). Margarine, diet stuff, almost all cereals, anything marketed as being 'fruit-based, so therefore healthy'. We only have porridge or Vita Brits, although DH sometimes likes Special K . I was ropeable yesterday because 'someone' at MILs birthday party (I don't know who, no one fessed up) gave DS three glasses of orange juice!!!! Not happy Jan!
Ange, I would love your muffin recipe too, please!
ETA Thanks, I took too long to press post LOL. Yep, Soy is evil and in everything, it drives me nuts!!!!!!
Dips? I have my suspicions that it probably is best to make your own...I hope I'm wrong.
To be honest, I'm not toooo fussed on fat and sugars, it's the chemicals and preservatives that I'm wary of. I can work off fat, burn off sugar, but what can my body do with chemicals?
I do roll my eyes at the fat free stuff loaded with sugar...we need to remember what our bodies turn excess sugars into!
ooh, yes, another one here who is not happy about the use of soy in food.
Dad used to cook a big pot of porridge in a slow-cooker overnight so we'd have creamy yummy porridge when we woke up for brekky :D Otherwise I think we just had Weet Bix and Shredded Wheat. I loved Shredded Wheat! But then we found out I'm gluten intolerant :(
I agree with the juice rants, I'd much rather eat a piece of fruit than drink a glass of juice.
LOVE IT! So true! Nothing 'diet' or 'lite' in this house, better to eat the real stuff in moderation than overload on the fat-free chemical-crap.:
I can work off fat, burn off sugar, but what can my body do with chemicals?
We do drink a lot of coke though :tmi: Not listening to the evils, its my weakness....
Wow this thread is so interesting.
I think somebody mentioned Nutella? I couldn't believe it when I moved over here and it was being adverstised as a heathy breakfast option!!! Although it prob is better than chock full of sugar jams and things (I eat toast with lime marmalade every morning *hide*).
I'm not sure if dip is actually bad or not, but its yummier and cheaper to make your own!! ;)
Today the kids took carrot, celery and cucumber sticks with dip. The dip was half mayo, half sour cream, tiny dash onion salt & garlic salt.
Sometimes I throw in a little French onion soup mix, but I dont think thats too good either....
CQueen, I love marmalade, too!
I don't mind nutella. I don't think it's any worse than jam or marmalade. We get it once a month or so, at least it has a relatively low GI.
Nelle, ITA that it's not fat and sugar that suck so much as the chemicals. I'm happy to let my children have juice if they want it, they drink lots of water too so the the odd glass of juice isn't going to hurt them.
I agree with pretty much everything in this thread. My blood boils everytime I go to a supermarket. There is so very little real food in Coles and Safeway/Woolies these days. Even the Health Food aisle is full of sugary crap. I said as much to DH last weekend. He said "Huh?" and picked up the closest thing: a sesame bar... and then nodded... full of sugar... it shouldn't have been in the "Health" food aisle!!! :wall:
I once said in BB that a jam sandwich made on white bread is junk food and a few members absolutely cracked it claiming that it was a perfectly normal thing to pack for lunch. Normal... but healthy??? I still disagree.
One thing that hasn't been stated in this thread yet is sliced deli meats. I catagorise them as a poor quality food. Full of salt and cereal fillers and a ****tail of preservatives.
I'm not demonising any particular food... i'm demonising the ignorance. Of course processed foods come through our kitchen... but gradually I am trying to move us away from our dependance on them. Most recently we have started a vegie garden. This has already had a big effect on our daily eating habits. For example: instead of sending my kids to school with vegemite sandwiches I go outside and pick some fresh baby spinach leaves and use them with a bit of mayo... they love it!
yep to the white bread Bath.
My sister and I used to always clash a bit over bread when we holidayed together because I like to buy grainy/wholemeal breads and she liked white bread.
Recently on of her friends had colon surgery and was put on a no fibre diet (no fruit, no veges etc). On the no fibre diet she's allowed to have white bread but no wholemeal or multigrain etc. Ever since then my sister has started buying grainy/wholemeal breads.
It's kind of freaky that they have removed all the goodness from bread :o
That said I do get the odd crusty french stick - I don't mind an occasional white bread indulgence.
I'm the same Pony... a white crusty French stick or a loaf of Phillipas Pane De Casa is a treat food! I think some people have forgotten what real bread is! Mix a bit of water with a piece of standard white bread and look what it makes: Clag! (remeber those pots of glue you used in primary school?)
I agree, we never had white bread at home unless it was something like a french stick or a cob for a special dinner. Dad actually used to make his own multi-grain bread, it was sooo good waking up to hot, fresh bread in the morning on the weekend!
Most recently we have started a vegie garden.
I can't wait until we have a garden and I can start up my herbs again! I'd love to get a vegie patch going when we have enough room. Nothing beats picking your own peas and asparagus :D
Pony, I loooove fresh crusty white bread with Mum's home-made pumpkin soup. Yummy :D Actually, speaking of soup...can I add those instand cup-o-soups to the list??? I don't think there's much goodness in them, and it's so easy to make soup yourself!
I love marmalade too but only if I make my own. Last two batches have been ruby grapefruit and rose petal, and blood orange. Tastes great but I'm having setting issues  I use less sugar than the recipe suggests, but it's still quite a lot
Wow Thepixie, they sound yumtastic!
Pixie: I make my own jams sometimes too... i also use less sugar than what you are supposed to ie equal weight of sugar to fruit (isn't it crazy!) so instead I used a sachet of Jam Setta. You can buy it at the supermarket... it's basically just citric acid and pectin. It really helps.
Yeah I put pectin in the last batch, but it mustn't have been enough - or do you have to use citric acid too? I might just use marmalade setting sugar next time LOL. The current batch is pretty runny but it's ok if you put it in the really cold part of the fridge. Although I really will have to try to set it, cause I have so much of it... Tastes delish though
Pixie, when Dad makes a batch of jam that doesn't set properly he just keeps it to stir through his porridge or natural yoghurt, it's delicious!
Pixie: I have started a thread HERE so we don't go too far off topic with jam in this thread :) I'd love to hear more about your preserving!
Bath i agree with you on the jam sandwich - I think it's possibly a healthier option than alot of other things - but seriously, how much nutrition is in it. Basically a tinie tiny bit of fruit, a whole pile of sugar and a fair bit of starch - not a whole lot else.
Lunch boxes are a child care workers worst nightmare! Actually I was very suprised to learn that the local C&K kindy allows all of the above mentioned (roll ups, chips, lollies, etc) in their centres lunches - also don't focus on healthy foods at all.
i call white bread "poison" in our house , it does nothing but bind my tummy up , gives me pain and makes my hubby over eat !!!
all the foods in the health food isle are a scam ! my DD is intolerant to some foods , but if i want "gluten free " i get sweets and cake mixes ..... grrr
so i just make my own , i do alot of my food shopping at the markets or i only buy food in its original form , if its flavored or instant i dont buy it .. esp pasta sauce its full of salt !!!
and i agree with delimeat ( have you seen the nasty stuff that has a smiley face on it !!!! ) i like to buy ham off the bone , but i find that soooo salty aswell ...
nothing beats home made corned beef on sandwiches !!!
Ange - I have just tried your muffin recipe! *droooooooooooooooooooool*
Well I am unashamedly a good food nazi! Like some others have said I love a fresh white cob/frenchstick very occasionally... But as Pony said it's not food that you eat & try & kid yourself that it's healthy.
I have to say neither is corned meat! :hide: Commercial corned meat is so full of nitrates and salts that it's a coronaries best mate! You can buy it without nitrates but it's still full of salt. It was one of my favourite meats - until I realised what I was eating...:jawdrop:
I buy St Dalfours fruit spread. It has no sugar in it. It's just fruit, grapejuice concentrate & fruit pectin. I too used to make my own jam but I couldn't cope with all the sugar. I wonder if there is a recipe for sugarless jam??? Anyone???
Deb, I love the St Dalfours fruit spread, it's delish! And such yummy flavours. We pretty much only have that or homemade. I am an absolute sugar nazi  but I personally think that sugarless jam is probably just like having dried out stewed fruit, not really jam at all ;).
Mum usually soaks her corned beef overnight to draw out a bit of salt, she only gets it from the local butcher who sells meat from local farms. I agree though Inanna, it is still salty! It's a special occasion dinner for us, like Christmas :)
The nitrates are even worse than the salt!
I'm just in the process of making them now Ange, banana and blueberry, made with rice milk ;). Will let you know how they turn out :D
i use nuttalex (sp?) and A2. ;)
Ange they turned out perfectly! mini and full size ones :D strawberry blueberry flavour... a MASSIVE hit with my DD (and me) and the neighbour and her two kids!
The Bear is currently making some nitrate-free corned beef for a free range butcher at our local market. It does need lots of salt though, it's the salt that preserves the meat.
Deb, I just googled sugarless jam = try cooks dot com they seem to have quite a few recipes there.
Yummo thanks for that Pixie - yummy can I come to your place tonight???
I have organic beef stroganoff with everything organic except the olive oil that I fried off with!
