Red face How do you make your porridge?

DH bought rolled oats the other day & I would love some porridge, but I'm a tad picky.
I've only ever eaten Grandma's porridge. She made it in the microwave with milk, thats all I know. We lost her 8 years ago, so I can't ask her, but I've never, ever liked it any other way!
I do have a feeling she put brown sugar in it, but I was under 10 I think, the last time I saw her make it, so I have no idea!
    Please help!!

did you get quick oats? i only used quick oats in the microwave but when Ive bought the wrong ones ive cooked them in a pot with milk just on low else it makes a huge mess on the stove, I just keep adding more milk and tasting to make sure they are cooked. then once cooked I like honey on mine but DS likes brown sugar on his.
Ive tried using water but I dont get the same creamy result.
Oh and the instant sachets rock!!
fingerscrossed someone else replys with some clearer instructions

Thanks. They are just home brand ones.
I've tried the sachets, but they weren't the same & yeah, Grandma's were really creamy.
I miss her cooking so much!

    Nannas/grandmas are the best cooks,
When we used to go stay at nannas when we were kids I always remember waking up to her cooking porridge on the wood stove

I can't give exact measurements, but I just put about a cup of rolled oats in an microwave jug, cover with milk and zap for about 6 or 7 mins. Stir and if it needs it add more milk and zap a bit more. I put brown sugar on top afterwards. I used to put a bit of salt in it, but stopped that once DS1 started eating porrige.

I use the aldi quick ones 99c a bag and def nicest result in my experience!
I make mine in micro, 1 cup of oats to 1 and 1/4 cups of fluid, i tend to use 3/4 boiling water and 2/4 of milk for creamier consistency
cook on high 2 min stir cook another 2 min
serve mine with lsa, cinnamon or nutmeg and some more milk..and if i need a bit of movement, some all bran on top too!

Clover I asked my dad how he made his (cos he's a grandpa )
He told me regular oats (not quick) soaked over night, boil them up and then add a little bit of milk but more than the milk of pouring cream. Stir until smooth and then serve with whatever your preference is on top. His are always smooth and always creamy - obviously.

My Mum's traditional English recipe was for 1/2 cup oats - add 1/2 cup boiling water and 1/2 cup milk and a good pinch of salt. Simmer slowly on the stovetop until thick and creamy.

Serve with a splash of cold milk and lots of yummy sugar!
