    Question Saffron substitute...??

    Is there one?
I always thought that saffron gave colour not flavour, but someone recently told me it does have flavour, but its pretty expensive and I was going to make a chicken paella that Ive never made before and will probably stuff it up (Not the worlds greatest cook -even with a recipe!) So to cut a long story short! Can I leave it out or use something else??

I think you can get imitation saffron at the supermarket - I have seen it at coles before.

A touch of tumeric will give the yellow colour you're after...........

I was just about to say the same as both of these clever ladies! Just be careful with turmeric as it can be a bit bitey and overpowering... so make sure its like a tiny pinch. In reality saffron isn't that exciting for how much it costs (maybe its just me) I always saw saffron as a spice of wealth... a stature thing (kinda like gold leaf) really to me its just expensive food colouring LOL! But having said that I do have strands of it in my cupboard for recipes that call for it, but its not necessary
