What are the Essential Staples in your cupboard?

We have recently moved house and I seem to have lost alot of my staples as I didnt replace them so I had less to move with

So now Id like to do a shop of basics.

i need flour already. Do you have both types of flour (S/Raising and plain?)
I want all the basics for cooking cakes, bread, and all that other stuff

I have salt , white sugar, .... also what spices/marinades do you have?

i think it also depends on what style of cuisine you like to eat/cook.

e.g for me, asian fish sauce, sesame oil, coconut cream in tins, kaffir lime leaves ARE staples. but if you weren't into asian food, they wouldn't be.

i think of staples more as

flour
sugar
salt
milk
baked beans

as in, the minimum you HAVE to have when you go camping, so that in the barest situation, you can make SOMETHING edible.

i would first make a list of what you like to cook, and then think about what you need to make those dishes, i think that will give you a good list of what to go and stock up on for next supermarket trip.

and some staples are perishable e.g fruit and vegies, meat.

Aw man there is so much food in my pantry! I like to have different things though and maybe now is a great time for you to buy stuff that you don't normally eat. That is why I love it when dh shops as he buys new things that I just don't think of so this is a great thread! How about

Chick Peas, Tapioca/Sago, Quinoa, Arrowroot & Spelt flour, Millet, Amaranth, Seeds (sunflower, flax, pumpkin), nuts, coconut milk, maple syrup, mixed beans, Rice/corn pasta, barley, red lentils

it really does depend on what sort of food you like to eat as to what you have in the pantry. we don't eat a lot of asian food, so the staples mentioned that mostly relate to asian don't make it into our cupboard

we have a "baking box" for cakes and things - has peppermint essence, orange essence, food coloring (not the ones from the supermarket though) ummmmm gelatine, chocolate chips, marshmallows and icing sugar (to make marshmallow icing if we want it), sprinkles, patty pans etc

our sauce rack scares even me to look at - i couldn't list them all - but DH likes variety, so there are always there. i think there are about a dozen different sauces for different meals. i can't keep up! if it isn't something you have with tomato sauce or gravy, i don't need sauce on it lol

fresh garlic, onion and spuds - always in the bottom of the pantry

tinned fruit (usually pineapple - either for adding to meals like pizza or for using in cakes make them more interesting)
baked beans
condensed milk

four different types of cereal (we buy different each fortnight just so we have variety) - rice bubbles (or generic version - which we use in making slices and stuff as well), cornflakes (again, dual use) special k and porridge/oats. special k is about the only one that doesn't have dual purposes now that i think about it!
