Exclamation Why frozen vegetables are better.....

    Hi!

I was shopping in Woolies tonight and there was a man kneeling down on his knees on the floor and with a bag in one hand, he was picking through the green beans with his other hand.... not grabbing at them, but picking through them one at a time... if he picked up one and he didn't like it, he would just throw it back on the pile and try again... strange.... and another woman was there doing the same (they may have been together!!) It just amazes me though how these people can molest these beans that other people have to eat eventually! I know most of them get boiled or steamed however it's not the point! Is it?? Who agrees with me?

So next time you go to pick some "fresh" LOL beans from the fruit and veg section of your favourite supermarket, just remember that many fingers have touched your beans!! haha

We have always bought frozen veges because we don't really have much time and they are fast to throw in the pot however seeing that today has confirmed to us why we always buy frozen!!! Frozen seem to taste better too... fresher.. cos' they are snap frozen as soon as picked.

I just love frozen veggies cos I don't have to peel and chop them and sometimes that's a lifesaver!!

oh I agree, i check my fruit and vege over, however I try not to touch the rest of them whilst doing so! Like this guy was digging in there and really making a day of it! It was quite unhygienic i thought.... i mean, i am always conscious of the fact that other people need to eat this food too so I try and only touch what i need to...
maybe i'm a bit padantic..! LOL

Yeah frozen is best.. i have heard that too and that's also why we buy them... otherwise the fruit and vege in probably sits on the shelves for up to 4 weeks i've been told - yuck! that means more hands touching it! hehhehe

I buy grape tomatoes and they come in a little plastic case... so that solves that problem! LOL As for bananas, they are covered in skin so it doesnt' matter who touches em'. we aren't really banana ppl anyway...

I buy frozen veggies.. because I dont end up using them in time before they go bad if I buy them fresh!

I always see people picking through the veggies and it sort of annoys me, especially when they pick through beans and lettuces. Or the ones that take half a dozen grapes off a bunch in the tray. I was at a fruit market and there was an open tray of a mixed salad and people were going through it with their hands, picking it up, putting it back etc. Ok, I admit, I pick through fruit sometimes, but thats because I am fussy and I only really buy apples and bananas, and its no big deal to pick through bananas.

I always thought fresh was best until I discovered frozen vegies. Just whack em in the pot and away with the packaging. No messy skins. It is annoying to see people tossing and turning fruit and vegies, and to think where have their hands been? Then again something to think on about people publicly handling things....omg...what about the money that we handle when we purchase items...lol... ewwww

Coles now sells alot of things like beans in packaged bags so we get them like that. I always worry about man handling of items, but when it comes to fruit I always man handle. Especially avocado's you can not just look at an avocado and pick it LOL!

Cailin I agree, i've seen those veges packed now which is great huh! Yeah avocadoes are like bananas, you can molest or man handle LOL them all you want and it doesnt matter as last time i checked, you dont eat the skin do you??? hehe
Sandy - thats a good point about the money, it's gross huh that's why antibacterial wipes come in handy!!! that is, if you are about to eat of course. I don't walk around cleaning my hands all the time! I'm not that padantic about hygiene haha

I'm always amused by people at my local Woolies that seem to think it's a buffet rather than fruit and vege buying area. I've seen people pick up whole handfuls of grapes and eat them!!

I usually buy my salads prepackaged - but I got a little freaked the other night when one of the news channels said that these products can have lysteria. May cause some problems in the future if/when I fall...

we buy primarily frozen veg for those reasons - and what we want fresh, we grow ourselves (then we KNOW it's only been our grubby hand on them anyway!!) - mmmm fresh tomato - mmmmmmm

LOL at picking through lettuces - our safeway have solved that problem by putting each lettuce in its own little bag...

They recently found a link between frozen food and Ulerative colitis and possible crohns disease. Just thought I'd chuck that in!
I buy some frozen and some fresh, but figure after washing it then steaming it, it'll be okay! Most half it gets peeled anyway, and lettuce comes in plastic bags, cherry tomatos in containers, corn and capsicum in the 3 packs etc etc

I think there are more important things to worry about that if someone has molested the vegies Washing them will get rid of any germies that someone may have left on something by touching for a second or two while looking for the ideal looking bean

Frozen vegies get touched too. There are pickers and sorters etc. And how do you know for sure that they haven't semi thawed while in transit? I read somewhere that that is not very good as it risks the vegies spoiling.

Have you seen a butcher in action? Mmmmmm now there is a sight

I always pick my beans like that.
I would never do it with lettuce or salad mix though.

that's a good point about buying lettuce mixes in bags prepacked etc and listeria, thats a bit of a worry... i thought they were hygienic? well they should be. i suppose there is a risk with buying any food even tinned food... like someone said, if you can grow your own veges and herbs than that's the best way... we have a dog so that idea went out the window a while ago.......!!

I pretty much buy only fresh vegies except peas and corn and I do reall ylove those frozen roast vegies they are yummy,

I only buy the pre packaged beans and brussels etc much easier and they are usually better quality anyway, if I do ever have to get the beans from the box I am guilty of fosicing through them, actually my DH told me off on the weekend for doing it hahahaha oooppssss but I usually buy pre packed or frozen.

I to think alot of the time the frozen veg is better unless you live in a place where you can get it from the growers ( like I do ) but the thing is with alot of supermarket and fruit and veg shops these days the fruit and veg has been stored in cold stores for up to a year sometimes longer and frozen etc so technically its not fresh you are pretty much always buying last seasons produce. thats why alot of apples etc are really pastey and potatoes are starchy etc.
